question about cheating investigations
I am a player in a (now paused) game "live gunshot 412." In the middle of a turn the game was apparently paused by a moderator...message was posted that the game had been paused due to a cheating investigation. Do those playing in the game find out the results from the investigation? Is it the case that even if no cheating is found that the game will still be cancelled? Can I go to bed without fear of the game resuming and me being charged with an nmr? Thank you.

Bouncing Russia in Sweden
German players who do this- why?

Al summed it up nicely, so all I have to add are some thoughts on why setting up for the option to bounce is useful.

I am personally a big proponent of the Kiel-Denmark opening as Germany, because I feel that the -option- of bouncing Sweden is too helpful a negotiation point to pass up, unless the opening negotiation of the game indicates that Russia is highly interested in getting along with you and neither England nor France show anything but hostility (this happens relatively infrequently, but it has compelled me to move Kiel to Holland a time or two, and reach for Russian backup).

A good Russia should understand that moving to Denmark does not neccessarily mean that you will stand him out of Sweden, and that in fact, you are sincerely hoping that it is not neccessary, because the stand out is only a move you want to consider under circumstances you wish hadn't happened to begin with:

1) you see the obvious signs of a nascent juggernaut forming, and want to ensure that it is, if not halted, at least slowed down to the point at which you can browbeat England and Italy into agreeing to help you and Austria deal with it.

2) As a negotiation tool to forestall a R-I alliance from attempting to immediately dismember Austria. In this case, you tell Russia something like "If it looks like you're moving on Austria right off the bat, I will stand you out in Sweden. If you leave Austria alone, I let you in" in the spring.

3) As insurance against a Russian Silesia opening. This one should require no explanation to the Russian. If he does something as irritating as going to Silesia on you, then he should expect not to get Sweden as a consequence.

4) To extract some sort of concession from Russia. If you already know England is going to be a problem, for example, you can offer Russia uncontested grabbing of Sweden and support in holding it if he helps you into Norway.

5) Russia looks like he is going to have too good a time in 1901 for some other reason not mentioned. In this case, the Sweden bounce can reasonably be construed as a way to delay him from growing too fast.

Note that in pretty much all of these cases, you don't want to be in the position where the bounce is neccessary, but you set yourself up to be in control of the 1901 fate of Sweden anyhow, because it is better to have that control and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Generally, I feel that Russia should also be willing to understand that you -want- to let him have Sweden, but need to make sure he is behaving himself in the rest of the map. If I'm in a game where Russia reacts to news that I am going to Denmark and want him to avoid unsavory behavior elsewhere by getting furious and promising to do what he can to ruin me instead of asking what I would consider good behavior from bears, then he and I were probably not going to get along well anyhow, and it's best not to give him the build.

Ultimately, there are two options for Germany:

(a) let R have Swe by which you rely on your diplomacy to do its job
(b) deny R Swe and rely on your military might do its job.

I prefer the diplomatic route, personally. I don't like burning a bridge with someone that could help bail me out when a EF hits the map in return for giving him a center. Also, it's not much to say Germany has gobs of military might going into 02.

My point regarding Russia in Norway was also to consider the effect of a
Northern opening from Russia on German policy in Sweden - hence a related question.

If Russia opens north, (with the anti english move of mos-stp, and stp-fin) then germany has to pick sides between england and russia.

On the other side, i feel that german taking sweden in 1902 can be counter productive - you get one SC but require (at least) two units to hold it, which feels like a net loss. If you move on to norway, now you must defend norway from england while defending sweden/baltic from russia. So you have two extra supply centers (norway and sweden) to defend against about four enemy units (two russian and two english) very risky over extension, imo. Though beyond that tactical analysis, i'm sure there are good diplomatic reasons for doing so.

Jutland Gambit seems like a way to make sure The Bear assumes you're after Sweden in 1902, no? I guess you could talk them out of it, but if I were Russia I'd have a hard time being convinced.

As we're looking at German openings, and it's been obliquely referred to, back in the '90s Richard Sharp carried out a number of statistical evaluations on frequency of openings and associated outcomes of different countries as recorded in the UK PBM hobby from the v late 60s through to the 90s. Amongst other things he showed that more often than not Germany prospers when neither Italy or Austria moves to Tyr; as a consequence his favourite ploy as Germany was to say to both those countries 'you move there, I'll help the other guy.' - besides this he, like I, were keen on moving Kie to Den, as stated above.

ATC: Hehe. Well, I submit that it might have done something interesting, if not for me leaving the order for Army Kiel-Den as a misorder... And I certainly didn't bounce Russia out of Sweden in 1901. ;-)

To be honest in that game I'm not sure if I would have died faster or slower if I hadn't misordered. Could easily have gone either way. :-)

I think people have hit most of the things I would say. One thing I would add:

Build timing matters. If you bounce Russia out of Sweden, then when you go and take Sweden later Russia likely will not have a disband, so there still will be that pesky northern fleet. If you let him into sweden, then when you go take it from him, he will have a disband, and with good diplomacy you likely can convince him to disband it.

@ATC: IMO this question shouldn't have been asked now while the game from which it stems is still ongoing. This can potentially affect the strategy of the German and the Russian players in that specific game.

I think where everyone in this thread can agree is that whether or not you choose to bounce, don't make it an automatic decision. Do it with a reason in mind, be resolute when you do it, and above all, be honest about it.

About bouncing with sweden:

I think there are cases, when Germany MUST bounce russia. One particular case is, when England opens English Channel, strongly anti-French, and Germany bouncing sweden sends the message he will prevent Russia to expand north, hence he is willing to work together with England.

A specific example is: gameID=88274 where I was Germany, DipperDon was England and we literally cleared the board very very fast.

Also, there was a debate already about sweden, threadID=877939, where I've said and I still stick to it:
---------
If England opens anti-french (for eg to EC) then, if germany is willing to cooperate, he bounces russia, to show he will help england against france, and not let russia to bother them.

But there are cases when germany needs a strong russia, for example turkey gets to BS, england opens to Edinborough posing no threat to Germany, it could be a good idea to make them fight.
If Russia opens north (mosc->stp) you might also support him, so he will secure scandinavia resulting a weak england, so germany can fight france.

If Russia opens weak south, you also might want to help him, because he will build south then, to support his units, slowing down turkey/austria.

As Split stated, you have to take all 7 countries' moves into count and make the decision according to that. Basically, if you need a strong russia, oyu let him in, if you have a good alliance by the very first move, you bounce.
---------

Conclusion, there's no rule fitting every game whether to bounce or not, it always depends on 7 players. In this SoW Gunboat it wasn't really a question, as Germany didn't even had the chance. Gemany made a decision, to open a way, sending a strong message who he thinks his enemy is. It's the other players' task from now on to go along with Germany or not.

I have also seen games, where russia got into Sweden, but he did NOT build in StP, and England was clever enough not to take StP. Just like Italy doesn't take Trieste. The result was an extremely successful English-Russian alliance. Yet this alliance didn't really get into the common thinking and until it does not pose any risk. But if England and Russia realize in the coming months' games they could actually work together, than Germany will get used to bouncing sweden again.

This game is contantly evolving, what was working a year ago, 2 years ago, and so on, might not work anymore. Keep that in mind, always.

I once bounced Russia in a F2F tournament. It ended with a 7-way draw; I had one SC and a unit in STP, he has one SC and a unit in Munich. Of course with C-Diplo it didn't end well for either of us...
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
04 Jul 15 UTC
My biggest issue with bouncing Russia in 01 is that in a great many games the west takes its time to decide the 2-man alliance. Even still, with everyone in 1901 moving with vanilla moves, you don't know if England/France is really your ally until you see something tangible to back it up which occurs in 1902.

If you bounce Russia in 01, you could be making an enemy that you can't afford to have prior to having all the information.

I generally prefer to support Russia into SWE but twice recentl Russia has built armies and pushed into my undefended east. This seems short-sighted and bad for both of us (at least in those games). Am I too eager to signal alliance? Or foolish to expect future "thanks"? Or was I just unlucky with respect to the Russian player?

A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

In gunboat, I think Den hold is probably better than supporting Russia to Sweden. Supporting him in sends a strong signal to the west that you want to work with Russia, which is likely to create an E/F. Then it makes sense for Russia to come take Moscow and Berlin before they do.

'Russia starts in moscow... what?'

Therefore, Russia starting is never a good thing for the West. Clearly, Germany should just bounce the bear in Sweden and get it over with. ;-)
thorfi (1023 D)
07 Jul 15 UTC
ATC: I agree with the main thrust of your argument (that supporting Russia -> Sweden is a strong signal in gunboat), but ... depending on how the rest of the board lays, that signal is not necessarily solid.

Certainly as a Russian, I'd not take it 100% confidently as an alliance proposal, I'd have to see what the German builds are to be more sure. Ditto as either England or France, depending also on where the board is.

Some gunboat games have various western conflicts laid down on the table obviously after Spring 1901. Depending on those conflicts, Germany might have no choice but to say "Hey, Russia, better come to my aid if you don't want E/F to eat me by 1903 and come for you next."

Also, just because there's a support doesn't mean it's the truth, any more than a press game with an accompanying message of "Hey, I'll support you into Sweden, let's work against England" is necessarily the truth either.
thorfi (1023 D)
07 Jul 15 UTC
Oh. And as for a Russian choosing to reverse-blitzkrieg the German eastern SCs... that would depend on how the rest of the board lay. Austria, England, Turkey, and what they're doing with Russia. I suspect the German would have to be pretty unlucky to have a gunboat Russia so not-in-danger from AET that they could afford to send two whole armies west... but I'm sure it happens.
