question about cheating investigations
I am a player in a (now paused) game "live gunshot 412." In the middle of a turn the game was apparently paused by a moderator...message was posted that the game had been paused due to a cheating investigation. Do those playing in the game find out the results from the investigation? Is it the case that even if no cheating is found that the game will still be cancelled? Can I go to bed without fear of the game resuming and me being charged with an nmr? Thank you.

I've had to make some recent moves using these devices, and notice that in builds, I thought I've entered a fleet, only to have an army appear. Depends on what you are buying. Paying in only 100s can raise an eyebrow, having an assortment of cash is somewhat normal, if not as common as it used to be. Having 20s, a few 5s and 1s is what most of the people I know usually have on them.

Due to tipping, most people carry at least some cash on them when they go out to eat. A lot of it depends on where you are going to eat. When getting fast food for example, half of the people might pay with a card while the other half might pay in cash. At a high class location, you will usually either see larger bills or a card.

Except for gas (and of course, online) I pay for things almost exclusively in cash.
ishirkmywork (1401 D)

cash is king. from my experience, cash is always preferred, unless you are buying something in the multiple hundreds or thousands of dollars. for instance, don't buy a used car when you are here for $7000 cash. get a cashiers check.
but i agree, most people carry 20s for everyday purchases....waving around 50s or 100s is usually a little rude, and your average shopkeep doesn't like making change for huge bills.
my final tip -- make sure to carry at least $200 in gold sacagawea dollars.
It would be unusual to buy a large appliance or electronics with cash. If you went to an Apple store and paid for a new Macbook Pro with cash, that would raise eyebrows for sure. If you're just doing some shopping, seeing sights, and going out to restaurants, probably a majority will not pay with cash, but it wouldn't be suspicious to do so.

I love sacs. Really wish we'd kill the $1 bill
ishirkmywork (1401 D)
06 Jul 15 UTC
the reality is, most places accept plastic payment gladly, expecially if the purchase is over $5. probably get the best exchange rate that way too. and don't forget the fanny pack for all those sacagawea dollars, i wasn't joking about that.
Espi (338 D)
06 Jul 15 UTC
I have never seen anyone use those for purchases, although vending machines are starting to carry them.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I try to use them but the reality is it's almost impossible if you always get change in bills
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))

Most subway ticket dispensers give change in sacagawea dollars if you pay with cash.

In general, if you're dropping cash for something that costs over $500, there's something sketchy going on.
ishirkmywork (1401 D)
06 Jul 15 UTC
yeah, that's why when you first arrive in the states you have to go straight to a bank and change over several hundred in bills for several hundred sacagawea dollars. everyone who is anyone makes sure you have at least 40 pounds of those coins on their person at all times. pro tip.

Randomizer (722 D)

After having to replace my cards twice with the first time after Target had their information stolen, I mostly use cash or checks. Sure carrying cash is bulky, but getting robbed isn't that likely. Finding out that your card was cancelled and the bank didn't notify you is a pain on a holiday where it gets rejected.

Back before the tech stock market bubble, some New York traders would go on Friday afternoon to the Federal Bank cash window and get at few thousand in $2 bricks. Then they would spend it over the weekend since it was legal tender with no limit on how much would be accepted unlike cents.

So go to your local bank and get some $2. Remember it's better to give than to receive.
jbalcorn (429 D)
06 Jul 15 UTC
Get a bank that is good at notifying you. I'm trying to go completely NFC payments, and I never use a debit card - if my credit card gets stolen, then the issuer is liable. If a debit card gets stolen, You'll get it back, but meantime you're broke.

I only shop at grocery stores that let me use NFC, and I let Target, and Wal-mart, and CVS know that I always try to shop elsewhere because they won't support it. Not that they care.
Randomizer (722 D)
06 Jul 15 UTC
The bank had no record other than my card was cancelled. They admitted that is was strange that there was no recorded reason or date with the cancellation.

At least they were quick with replacing the card so I could relink it with the few places I needed it for monthly online bills.

The downside of carrying large amounts of cash in the US is the police can take it on the grounds that it must be involved in a criminal act. They don't need to charge you with a crime or even come up with a possible crime. You then face a long court battle to get it back.
Espi (338 D)

steephie22 (182 D(S))

Also, perhaps not a great comparison because I live with my parents, but I make money in both cash and deposit. To prevent ending up with a shitload of cash, I spend that first and since I don't spend a whole lot of money, I tend not to run out..

I'll have to do some wire transfers for driving lessons though and the new laptop won't be cash either, but day-to-day transactions are all cash for me..

If I didn't have cash income, I would probably pin, so I guess whether you spend cash also kind of depends on whether you receive cash..
That makes sense, right?
Espi (338 D)
06 Jul 15 UTC
I get direct deposit so if I want cash I either have to go to the bank, an atm, or go shopping and ask for cash back. It is much simpler for me to just carry a card. So @steephie22 that does make sense.

There is nothing suspicious about using cash. I suppose that if somebody *asks* to be paid in cash, you might wonder if he is planning to report everything to the IRS, but that is all.

" Due to tipping, most people carry at least some cash on them when they go out to eat"

Huh? It is extremely easy to tip using a credit card.

I have my job pay me in cash, all 50s. I carry around my life savings in a briefcase. In additon to that, I also have balls of smaller, crumpled up bills in my black trenchcoat that I use to pay for smaller bills like food. If I buy a car or something alongs those lines, I use the briefcase.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Most restaurants take tips off of credit and split it disproportionately among people that didn't earn it, so yeah, tip in cash if you can.
WardenDresden (239 D(B))
07 Jul 15 UTC
The government can choose to consider any significant cash withdrawal (or sum of smaller cash withdrawals) suspicious and then investigate further. But really the worst thing is that the police can and do seize tons of cash off of anyone they arrest and if they choose to hold it under probable cause it shifts the burden of proof to the person who wants their money back to prove that it wasn't the result of illegal activities.

But as long as you're not walking around with several thousands of dollars cash on your person there's nothing innately suspicious. Just don't try to go through any airports with over 10,000 on hand either. Banks will also report any transactions over 10,000, which isn't really relevant.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
07 Jul 15 UTC
"Banks will also report any transactions over 10,000, which isn't really relevant."

This number has been dropped a few thousand in recent years. Not sure what it's currently at, but sure it's less then 9K.
Steephie, having lived in the Netherlands and the USA, I can tell you, the attitude towards cash is really the same. The only difference is that ATMs in America rarely give out higher denominations than $20, so paying anything above $200 or so in cash is going to involve many bills and possible counting mistakes.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
07 Jul 15 UTC
"This number has been dropped a few thousand in recent years. Not sure what it's currently at, but sure it's less then 9K."

Multiple cash transactions under the reporting amount (whether you know what the mandatory reporting amount is or not) will make you vulnerable to a charge of "structuring" your finances to avoid reporting, which is itself a crime. If they want to get you, they will - the laws as they stand now afford limitless opportunities to prosecutors to screw people over.

@ the OP: In general, using cash is fine in the US for most purposes, but make sure you're never carrying more than a $1,000 at any given time or (as Randomizer points out) the police will steal it if they find it - which is the greatest single threat to cash transactions in America.
