Feminism, Authoritarianism and Gender
I hesitate to post this, but i wonder where discussion will lead...
Is Gender socially constructed? Is there a difference between gender identity and gender expression? What other issues does this raise?

"What stops that is a damned good telling off when you step over the line, and being exposed to a culture of respect for others and an understanding that everyone is different."

True, but misunderstanding can lead to people like you causing offence where none is intended. You have some valid points, you don't need to know the personal information of someone's genitals or sexual preferences, unless you intend to have some sexy times with them; but knowing that these things exist and a perfectly normal is an important step in acceptance.

And for everyone else? Lets talk to kids about this stuff, so when they grow into puberty they will understand that it is ok to be who they are. You can't just wait until someone comes by confused and unsure looking for guidance and then, what? Have them ask a 'traditionally straight' person who doesn't know what to say because they don't have a clue?

Every person is included by this system, asexuals (aces) who feel pressured into having sex they're not interested in; demi-sexuals who don't feel attraction until they get to know someone; inter-sex people who are often cut by doctors to 'fit in' with the politically correct male/female sex (whichever they seem closest to)

Awareness of these issues is key toward ending discrimination. We wouldn't need awareness if we didn't live in a democracy, where an informed populance makes decisions. We'd just need a benovalent dictator who listens to the individuals and groups concerned.

This is not that complicated.

You have a gender, a sex, and a sexuality. You also choose how to express those things. Simple.

Except it isn't simple because, as has been demonstrated time and time again in this thread and elsewhere, not even the progressive intelligentsia can agree on how it should best be viewed. If you think you can explain this effectively to prepubescent kids you are living on another planet.
thorfi (1023 D)

When you say things like "not even the progressive intelligentsia can agree", you do realise this phrase is semantically null, right?

Like, what does that even mean? As if "progressives" and "intelligentsia" are even some kind of groupthink bloc...

There's a lot of solid information out there regarding these matters. It even fits on a damn A4 page without being dumbed down much. If you think you can't explain this to kids, you've never dealt with many kids.

My 2yo has a handle on some of this shit. It's not difficult.
Octavious (2732 D)

You don't actually remember being a kid, do you thorfi? It is a time when jokes such asking "do you have a pencil sharpener?" is considered the cutting edge of sexual humour. It is when class videos, such as Some of Your Bits Ain't Nice', designed to educate children about the need to wash more when puberty starts leads to the slightly smelly kid getting a huge wave of bullying. It is when those who are different, be they the girl who still sucks their thumb occasionally or the poor sod who last wet himself, get treated extremely cruelly.

If you think they will calmly take this all on board, in all its glorious complexity, and live the rest of their lives in harmonious understanding you are very much mistaken.
Octavious (2732 D)

Still, I think we've reached the stage where little more can be gained by discussion. Interesting one, though.

"If you think they will calmly take this all on board, in all its glorious complexity, and live the rest of their lives in harmonious understanding you are very much mistaken."

Did someone claim that or is this just one of your straw men? Calmly? Glorious? Harmonious? Give me a break.

The point is to present information in a non-judgmental way. If you've heard any stories about genderqueer coming to terms with their sexuality, you've probably heard one or more of them say, "At least I now know what to call myself." People outside the norm often need or want a way to identify themselves, be it music, fashion, sport or sexuality labels/definitions, so they can find their peers.

Just telling someone they're unhappy isn't productive.

"not even the progressive intelligentsia can agree on how it should best be viewed."

I'm pretty sure the genderbread person is consider one of the best presentations of this, ie most inclusive of all experiences. Now humans are many and varied, and genderbread is on version 3, with some minor tweaks in response to criticism, but i don't know where you get this idea of huge division from.

Of course not everyone agrees. Still this is the most useful, clear and inclusive description, without calling anyone 'normal' and anyone else feeling othered.

Find me a social movement where everyone agrees on everything and I'll concede that point to you.

Why'd You Choose Your Username?
It's a decision we all make, and one we have to life with for the rest of our time on this site; choosing a username. Some choose their own name, their initials, a historical figure or even a reference to a movie or TV show. So I ask all of you, just why did you choose that username you have?

In case you don't know; Ireland is having a marriage equality referendum today. Yes will mean marriage between gay couples becomes a reality, a No will deny them their fundamental human rights.

Favorite Quotes
I've always enjoyed little concentrated nuggets of wisdom and any opportunity to expand my collection. What are some of your favorite quotes?

From Benjamin Franklin's autobiography:
"So convenient a thing it is to be a reasonable creature, since it enables one to find or make a reason for everything one has a mind to do."

Does anyone know a software to simulate movements for the world map with 17 players? There are various for other variants, I suppose a mod with the world variant should be sufficient. Any info on that? Thank you :)
