That would be awesome! In anticipation of that event, passworded live games don't show up in the widget.

Next request: Any way you could automate unit destruction in cases where a) the unit has no legal retreat moves, or b) the player has no SCs remaining? Keep up the good work!

It's automatic, for any non passworded live games. It might make sense to restrict it to live games starting in say the next two hours too.

That's awesome. Is there any way you can add a quick link below the games listed to the live games thread? Just a "for more, click [url=X]here[/url]" should do it.

I appreciate the effort to develop the new feature and the desire to improve the site. However, for me this feature is a negative rather than a positive. If I want to look for upcoming live games (which I rarely do), I'll look in the dedicated thread. Otherwise, this feature takes up space on my home page and pushes down new Forum posts, which I do follow. Just offering the other perspective.

I think it might be better if it were below "My games" in the right column, but I like the idea in principle.

@bo "Upcoming live games" right next to the big green words there is an image. That image is a link to new games available by phase length.

I'm not sure about this. The live game thread doesn't have nearly enough +1s yet.

I think an option in the settings page to disable this might be something we should consider for those members who aren't interested in live games.

Whilst I hate to open the door to suggestable trolls... I'm amazed no-one has yet just created 20 live games which would essentially push the forum all the way down...? Is there any limit to number it shows?

PJ: A vague answer for you is "some possible abuse cases are handled". In general, if any new feature gets abused in a way we didn't anticipate (or expect), we'll have alter it. This will take time away from other improvements.

I trust that people realise that if they spend their time thinking of ways to misuse new features- thus causing more work for the dev team- we'll decide that it's not worth doing new features.

ATC- another suggestion, non-live version of the new live game feature. Non-live games would appear when they are 3 hours from their start; both features would be toggle-able. So someone who only plays live has the live feature, someone who plays non-live has the non-live version; someone who doesn't care for the feature in general can turn both off.

THM: An option on your settings page to never show the upcoming live games widget is coming.

I agree with THM and others. While I appreciate ATC's effort, I wonder if it couldn't be placed on the right side, *under* the user's current games? It would be easy to look for there, and would not be an overwhelming and forum-hiding intrusion to those of us who are not looking for one.

@semck- I think an issue with placing it on the right side is that new users may get confused and it may cause a rise in NMR and CD situations.... however the center column would not hinder the forum or the area that shows games and since notifications are shown as pop-ups above all 3 columns the center column is redundant to begin with.

There was some discussion on where to put it - it was decided to put it above the forum, as that's where the current live game thread appears anyway. I didn't want to put it under "My Games", as that's where we'll be putting spectated games (which is coming soon).

Nothing is set in stone - we'll always have the option to modify choices if they turn out to be bad or widely unpopular. I think in this case, the option to hide the live game announcement widget will solve the problem for the users who don't want to see it.

I don't want to promise too much, but you should have that feature sometime in the next week or so.

Hi ATC, I hope you realise it wasn't an invitation at all to try and misuse it! It had just suddenly occurred to me a little earlier in the evening when there were 4 games there that it took quite a lot of space up, which then combined with our spam friends this morning made me think of it...

The limit is probably a bit high. I might make it three.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate the option to hide it.

My concern is more the impact it will have on the forum, though. Many players presumably won't turn it off by default, and as more live games are offered, the forum's very existence may be much less noticed than previously. The vibrancy of the webdip forum has always depended on the fact that you have to see it when you come sign in to see your games.
