As of this report, over 1400 are dead as a result of the quake and the death toll is likely to rise substantially as more are uncovered and the wreckage is cleared. A number of historically and religiously significant temples and shrines have either been damaged or destroyed. It also uprooted the Dharahara Tower in Kathmandu, trapping and likely killing hundreds, for the second time, the last being in 1934 when Nepal experienced its last significant earthquake. In the midst of the Himalayan climbing season, over a thousand people are resting and acclimatizing on Everest, most of them at base camp or camp 1 at about 21,000 feet. Base camp was struck by an avalanche that killed at least 10 and buried a number of others. Camp 1's condition is unknown. A number of climbers were also buried in the Khumbu Icefall, which killed 16 last year, and on fixed ropes between the icefall and camp 1. In the region around the epicenter, fortunately more rural, upwards of 90% of homes have been completely destroyed.
Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. Much of its economy comes from Himalayan tourism, but they certainly do not have what they will inevitably need to repair Kathmandu and other cities around the country as well as house those whose homes no longer exist. I imagine people in northeastern India and potentially in other nearby countries are in need of assistance as well. Please give what you can.
