So, I was approaching this line-up at a convenience store or at least I thought I was...
...I guess the problem was I didn't know if I was going to the front or the back of the line because the clerk/owner was turned around on a stool...

So a girl isn't sure about 'breaking up' with a guy and I help her figure it out..
I think I've done it pretty much by the book, but I can't ignore the fact that there's quite a bias: I really like her, and I don't like him. So breaking up happens to be in my favour.
What I wonder is: does this make it wrong? At least consciously, the only thing I care about is helping her do the right thing, and there's definitely something 'cold' between them that wouldn't be there if they love eachother.. I'm pretty sure it would end at some point anyway..

The Favorite Author Tournament: The Elite 8
Into Round 4, the Elite 8, and the contestants? George Orwell, who IS More Equal than Others! Charles Dickens, who has Great Expectations after taking out Homer! Virginia Woolf, in a League and Room of Her Own as the last female author standing! Victor Hugo, Master of Notre Dame! Poe, who's looking to be eliminated nevermore! Dumas, out-dueling all comers! Isaac Asimov, laying the Foundation for victory! And Tolkien, beating Vergil to become the One Fantasy Writer to Rule them All!

Is anyone thinking about creating an option for a minimum threshold to join a new game based on reliability rating?

Classic Chaos
This site needs the "Classic Chaos" variant from Vdiplomacy. I would play it at Vdip but it's next to impossible to start a chaos game there.
Good idea no?

SRG idea: no builds
So I want to get people to try out a novel idea I had: a game where you can never build, except to get back to your starting # of units.

Who's in?

Includes some very interesting stuff about Edi Birsan's life story and also does a great job of conveying the feel of the game to a lay audience

Unlike almost everything I've ever read about Diplomacy, that was genuinely good.

“Is there a ‘right way’ to live?” asked Birsan. “Not really. Diplomacy reflects life.”

Nice article, thanks for the share Frank.

We need a way to plus one the article's author.
Would not surprise me if we see a small spike in membership with people checking this out....

"By his own admission, Edi was introverted and repressed. A year after his mom took off, Edi was in therapy. His therapist saw in him a need to channel his bottled-up aggression, and to learn how to trust people again. She gave him a gift — a board game. I read in a magazine that this was Kennedy’s favorite game. They’d play it in the White House.3 She told him it would help him deal with betrayal."

Funniest paragraph I've read in awhile. Poor Edi.

Thanks for sharing, Frank. Good stuff.
I used to play nothing but face to face games. I played one at DragonCon year before last. I got my hat handed to me in short order by a law student playing Italy. I immediately started giving out the Webdip url. Hope some of those guys are among us now.
So are we all alpha nerds? Great article, Frank

I've been waiting for an opportunity to post this, and this thread seems as good as any. I'm organizing the annual Weasel Moot tournament in Chicago this summer. It will be July 26-27, right downtown at the Hampton Inn and Suites in the River North neighborhood. The venue is surrounded by shops, restaurants and bars -- it's a great location. You can find more info at http://windycityweasels.org/wm8. If you have questions, post here or pm me.

The typical tournament in the North American hobby isn't quite as intense as a world championship, but the article gives you a pretty good idea of what playing in an ftf tournament is like. Anyway, we'd love to see some more WebDippers there.

if you haven't played Ftf before... or even Dip.
Do you think that article would rather make you want to play or not?
Some FtF friends of mine are having that discussion, courious what webdip thinks.
Draugnar (0 DX)

It depends on the personality type. For the extroverted intellectual egomaniacs like most of us here, I think it would draw us in to dip even if we had never played before. But for the more traditional care bear players at new folk who prefer cooperative type games like D&D or MMOs, it would keep them away.

I think it might intrigue the casual wargamer, but if they are a pure strategy and tactics with known sides type, they might be dissuaded a bit knowing they don't just have to know their shit but be able to influence others.

Wiz - as someone who has never played ftf, this article really makes me want to play. Strongly considering the trip down to weasel moot now, actually.

"For the extroverted intellectual egomaniacs like most of us here" I actually don't consider myself as extroverted, intellectual or (very) egomaniac ... but this article made me want to play a ftf tournament ... no ... wait ... it was not the article - I wanted to do that for a long time already ... I just don't have the time to do it and I don't know if there are any tournaments anywhere not too far away
great article from a great website

somebody shared that with me yesterday, great read. I found particularly accurate the part where it said, "After all the anger, the manipulation, the frayed nerves, and the hurt feelings, I was left feeling something wholly unlike boredom, but something also unlike fun."

This very accurately describes why I no longer actually PLAY. Don't worry kids, I will again, someday, when my fragile emotional heart can again bear the strain.

Very minor bug
Very minor issue that probably doesn't affect many people. If you sign in to a banned account (I created an account in error near the beginning, forgetting that I already had one), there's no 'log out' button. I needed to clear the cookies in order to sign in with my real one. Not a big issue but figured it was worth mentioning.

PM me if you're interested. Please do not post interest here since it's an anonymous game. Any player that is interested will do, but I place preference on those that have completed games and have not had a track record of CDs.
