So a girl isn't sure about 'breaking up' with a guy and I help her figure it out..
I think I've done it pretty much by the book, but I can't ignore the fact that there's quite a bias: I really like her, and I don't like him. So breaking up happens to be in my favour.
What I wonder is: does this make it wrong? At least consciously, the only thing I care about is helping her do the right thing, and there's definitely something 'cold' between them that wouldn't be there if they love eachother.. I'm pretty sure it would end at some point anyway..

Is anyone thinking about creating an option for a minimum threshold to join a new game based on reliability rating?

Classic Chaos
This site needs the "Classic Chaos" variant from Vdiplomacy. I would play it at Vdip but it's next to impossible to start a chaos game there.
Good idea no?

SRG idea: no builds
So I want to get people to try out a novel idea I had: a game where you can never build, except to get back to your starting # of units.

Who's in?
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
20 Jun 14 UTC
Actually, no, not even to get back to the starting # of units, that wouldn't work right. So no builds at all.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
20 Jun 14 UTC
You should allow people to disband and rebuild different units. Otherwise this won't work at all. Sounds cool though.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

How would you ever win? It would be essentially impossible to get to 18 SCs because you wouldn't be able to defend your gains. People would either just stay put or chase each other in circles around the map.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
20 Jun 14 UTC
It's a special-rules game, an experiment. I have no idea how well it would work.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Jun 14 UTC
I do, it would fail miserably. Especially if you don't let them rebuild forced disbands.
tvrocks (388 D)
21 Jun 14 UTC
also, what if, for example, austria is going after an england? they would not be able to defeat them because they would not have enough fleets. I would be interested in the idea, however, it would work better if we were able to, for example, build one unit for every 2 scs.
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Jun 14 UTC
The problem would be triggering disbands when someone finds themselves stabbed and has to get back down to the SC/2 count.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
21 Jun 14 UTC
Initially I thought you can rebuild up to your starting units. Probably the best way to do it, if we do. If anyone is interested, just add themselves to this list:

I'd be interested in the proposed reduced builds, but Russia has a distinct advantage all game with 4 units to every one else's 3.

You should try this, just to see how badly it goes.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

Yes, but as a normal game, Russia has four neighbors to fight.

It'll be interesting to observe this game, but I don't actually want to take part.

Given a restriction on building beyond 3 units (or 4 for Russia), ensures that there will never be more than 22 units on the board, unlike the typical 34 (or most often at least 30+) units that fill the board for most of the game once neutral SCs are taken.

Once players start getting eliminated, the number of units are only going to drop further. If things come down to four players (if eliminating the other three can even be reasonably managed), there will be just 12 (or maybe 13 with Russia) units left. With so few units and so much space to run around in, it seems like it will be very difficult to maintain borders or contain threats, and hence it will just be a lot of chasing people around.

In such a variant, mass can only be destroyed, rather than built up and then transferred around as in the normal game.

Should be hilarious to watch.

I think it's going to be frustrating, and fun, and awful, and great.

what if it was something like, you could only build a unit for every enemy home SC you captured? that way you could keep 22 units at all times and puts a twist on which SCs to gun for?
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
21 Jun 14 UTC
That is a good idea. I like it.
tvrocks (388 D)
21 Jun 14 UTC
we could say that you can only have one extra unit built for each year. ex: 1901 to 1902 would equal plus 1 possible unit built. you would then be able to build one more each tturn. I like kallen's idea though.
Squigs44 (273 D)
21 Jun 14 UTC
I would play with kallen's idea, but won't be able to start until Monday, and I would like at least 1day phases, and a smaller pot. I don't care about wta or ppsc or anon.
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Jun 14 UTC
Another variation that would work is one unit for each home SC you possess and one for every two captured SCs. So a win would have at most 10 units (4 +{13/2) or 3+(14/2))
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Jun 14 UTC
But it would work best on a build anywhere map.

@ Chaqa: "Yes, but as a normal game, Russia has four neighbors to fight"

Only at the beginning. What you fail to realise is that if you have no builds, your natural urge to protect your home SCs is reduced. In your proposed variant, it would be just as much in Russia's interests to abandon one of its borders and focus all four units in one direction.
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Jun 14 UTC
Except Russia's two fleets are at polar opposites on the map.

Don't be intentionally obtuse, Jamie, you know I meant the northern and southern edges *of the map*. That's why I said "on the map".

Very minor bug
Very minor issue that probably doesn't affect many people. If you sign in to a banned account (I created an account in error near the beginning, forgetting that I already had one), there's no 'log out' button. I needed to clear the cookies in order to sign in with my real one. Not a big issue but figured it was worth mentioning.
