In the absence of your great advice, I chose the direct approach, by which I mean I asked the girlfriend directly. It did not go well.

Okay I'll bite. Why did you need those panties? Why did they have to be hers? Why was it preferable that they not be washed?

Alright, so here's what you need to do.

1. Visit your friend's house. Your job will be much easier if the g/f lives with the friend. Otherwise, you'll need to get creative.
2. Bring an old alarm clock.
3. Leave alarm clock. If the g/f doesn't live with the friend, you'll need to hide the alarm clock in her purse.
4. Call a few days later because you forgot something. Ask the girlfriend if you can swing by her place "if she has the time".
5. Before you visit g/f's house, stop and get a very messy fast food. A chimichanga works nicely.
6. Get chimichanga all over your shirt, preferably pants too.
7. Ask if you can do a quick load of laundry. Casually ask if she has anything to add to your load.
8. Have sex with girlfriend.
9. Keep panties.

You have to be proactive. Presumably the friend has known you longer than her, and probably implicitly trusts you more because of it. Find a time when he's not with her, go to him, and confess that you've been sleeping with his girlfriend. Apologize repeatedly and tell him that it will never happen again, and then leave him to confront her. As he's working up the nerve, she'll tell him that several pairs of panties are missing, and that she suspects you. This will only confirm his suspicions and cause him to completely cut off ties with her. It may be difficult to return to the previous level of friendship, but hey, you got the panties.
