Just like cash, BTC are very useful when you want to pay for something without a credit card. There may be a variety of reasons for this: the receiver doesn't accept CC, you don't want to pay fees, you're too young to have a CC, etc. Just like cash, BTC allows for simple, fast, "anonymous" transactions.

abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@krellin

Alright, if you hate cash, then your dislike of BTC is understandable.

" he thinks they will skyrocket in value and he can retire to his private island with thucy in a thong...Not gonna happen."

Well, this did happen once...

Will BTC be the ecurrency when all this plays out? Who knows, but it's pretty clear people want something like this. Should you put your 401k into BTC? No, of course not. But, if you can throw some money in either to use for online transactions or to just see what happens, there really is no harm.

Abge - so again...the concept of an "e-money" - I get it...no problem. Stick a chip in my wrist and free me from my wallet. I'm game. RFID me so my front door recognizes me...totallly down with that.

Bitcoins....they are not a high concept...they are a *brand name*...and a bunch of people (PE giggling over his computer, waiting to get rich) are deluding themselves if they think the almighty government-backed dollar is going to go belly up next week and he'll be the only one left with cash to buy Thucy his pretty things.

"f they think the almighty government-backed dollar is going to go belly up next week and he'll be the only one left with cash to buy Thucy his pretty things."

I'm pretty sure no one here is making that argument. Transferring money over the internet sucks for a variety of reasons. BTC makes it much easier, which is why people like it. It's not perfect, but it's better than most other options.
krellin (80 DX)

"Well, this did happen once..."

as it does with....Pokemon card, Magic the gathering cards, Beanie babies....lots of things become gimicks and obtain commercial/trading value. Bitcoins are not money. People pretend they are money. that are not. I could trade you six chickens and a bag of peppercorns to fix my flat tire...that doens't make them "money". Bitcoins are not money.
krellin (80 DX)

"Transferring money over the internet sucks for a variety of reasons. BTC makes it much easier"

lol what the hell is so difficult about transfering money over the internet? I do it on a regular basis for a variety of reasons using multiple different methods. Surely you jest....

I could not send my mother bitcoins tomorrow....she is not equipped to recieve them.

You assertion is false, and assume something that is not true.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

How do you transfer money online without a credit card or paying transaction fees?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

"Bitcoins are not money."

I agree 100%. I think it's ridiculous that governments are trying to treat them as such. However, that doesn't mean they can't have value.
"So PE....big man on the street...tell us, boy, how much money do you have sinked in to bitcoins that you froth at the mouth like a two bit crack whore who dropped her pipe in the sewer when your precious experiment is questioned?"

0, dumbshit, I just know a blistering pathetic excuse of a human being crowing over someone's losses and attributing it to something he doesn't understand in a disingenuous attempt to turn that crowing into a discussion thread when I see one.
semck83 (229 D(B))

krellin, it doesn't take actually having bitcoins (I have none) to enjoy taking swipes at your patented krellin blend of ignorance and condescension. I'm pretty sure you have no evidence whatever that PE owns any bitcoins, and I know you have none that he and Thucy have ever met.

It's a pathetic rhetorical ploy to distract from the consistent pwnage you're getting on this thread.
krellin (80 DX)

One example - I use bill pay for all my bills -- electronic transfer of funds. Boom.

I purchase things from Amazon, for example, all the time, which is a transfer from my bank account directly to someone else (without sales tax, no less)....cheaper than cash.

I transfer money from my checking account to my investment accounts bi-weekly, and to my children's college savings account bi-weekly without fees.

My father deducts money from my account to his once per month to pay my portion of a shared account he pays...no fee.

It requires the exchange of some basic information....and....I'm assuming that unless BTC are magic they will require the exchange of some basic information as well.

Now granted, these transactions are different than what yo uare referring to with BTC. and no doubt, were BTC to become mainstream, it would take about half-a-heartbeat before business were taking "transaction fees".

Transaction fees are what people charge yo for convenience. they are not magically applied to credit transactions...they are placed there by people trying to make money.

If you think BTC won't suffer the same fate, then you are far more naive then I imagined.
semck83 (229 D(B))

So you can use the internet to transfer money to large multinational corporations and people who are on your bank accounts with you?

Wow, that really is as flexible as cash!
krellin (80 DX)
14 Feb 14 UTC
semck - I'm getting "pwnage" huh? How cute....he thinks he's palying a video game.

No....semck, you moron, I already admitted I don't understand BTC...and I have been corrected. And with this corrected information I'm actually having a discussion with Abge. I see the different in BTC versus my credit card, for example...I'm simply not convinced that it is necessarily superior in any way.

I am convinced, however, that you are not intelligent enough to offer any evidence to prove me wrong where abge has failed.....thus making you just another mouthy assclown.

As for PE....I'm certain, given his vehement attack...that he is, indeed, hunched over his computer, giggling at his BTC stash, laughing himself silly as he dreams about Thucy in pretty things as they slip away into the night, riding awash in BTC wealth...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Direct connect between bank accounts is fine for close friends and family, but I would never use it for stores or between people I know less well.

"were BTC to become mainstream, it would take about half-a-heartbeat before business were taking "transaction fees". "

No. People build the Blockchain because they are rewarded with BTC, making transaction fees unnecessary. Even today, you can pay a transaction fee for faster processing, but it is voluntary and significantly less than PayPal BS.
semck83 (229 D(B))
14 Feb 14 UTC
"I am convinced, however, that you are not intelligent enough to offer any evidence to prove me wrong where abge has failed."

I agree. Because abge has already proven you thoroughly wrong to any impartial observers who actually care about using reason; and nothing could prove you wrong, to you.

semck -- uh.....thank you for demonstrating YOUR absolute ignorance. No...not a single entity that I mentioned is "on my bank account with me".

Wow...maybe when you start to wear the Big Boy pants you'll understand these things. Until then, you are not worth any more of my time.

It's actually much, much more flexible than cash, starting with the notion that i don't have to **be in your presence** assclown. If you fail to recognize even this simplest of points, you truly are a moron.

And I think, kiddies, that was a little....<wait for it>....PWNAGE on semck's sadd little ass.

<ssssssss....> Oh...that burns....
krellin (80 DX)

Semck - abge has not proven me wrong about anything, as a matter of fact, other than to correect me on my understanding of what a bitcoin actually is, which I already admitted. Other than that, a bitcoin is an electronic beanie baby...a cute gimick suckers buy because they think they will get rich, that tries to emulate a financial system....and technologically could....except it's not owned by the government, and therefore never will....which (again) renders it of little more long-term value than your pokemon cards.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

"If you think BTC won't suffer the same fate, then you are far more naive then I imagined."

The only reason transaction fees can be charged is because traditional transfer systems go through central servers and are locked down. Anyone can transfer BTC from one wallet to another wallet without any central authority to charge a fee.
krellin (80 DX)
14 Feb 14 UTC
"making transaction fees unnecessary"

Transaction fees are not "necessary" when I swipe my credit card, either. that doesn't stop them from being charged.

When a store has to start implementing a new system to track this new wonder currency, you will pay a fee for the privilege.
semck83 (229 D(B))
14 Feb 14 UTC
Krellin,

Yes, of course credit cards are more flexible than cash in some ways. But in other ways, internet payments really suck for a lot of things that cash is good at. If you haven't experienced that, well, good for you I guess.

Ever tried to send money to a stranger you don't especially trust and who doesn't have a Paypal account? (Down payment on a used car, lest your imagination go all wild). It's not as easy as you'd hope.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
14 Feb 14 UTC
@krellin

Credit Card companies charge a transaction fee to the store because they can. Stores sometimes pass that fee on to the consumer.

There is no central authority monitoring BTC so there is no one to charge a transaction fee on it. Now, some stores may charge a fee if you pay using BTC, but that is *NOT* a transaction fee.
"I do not own bitcoins."
"PE owns bitcoins."
"I do own bitcoins."
"PE owns bitcoins."

"I do own bitcoins" = 1
"PE owns bitcoins" = 2

1 => 2 AND ~1 => 2

It seems clear that krellin does not understand how bitcoin works or why it might be a useful technology. Nor does he really care to learn these things, since all he appears to be interested in is attempting to discredit the overall idea as what he sees as a failure that he can blame on the progressive liberals.

There's not much practical difference between arguing with a stubborn idiot and a troll... either way you're only wasting your time.

I have been playing here for some time, and I'm a little upset with the way the randomizer works. I have started in 25 games and have not once been chosen to play as Turkey. I have been Turkey once when I joined midgame. I would like to play a game from start to finish as Turkey, but it has yet to happen. Can somebody explain how the algorithms work exactly and why I have yet to be Turkey yet have been Russia now 6 times.

One of many liberal paradox's, I call this one Putin33's Dilemma:

USA must intervene in all humanitarian war disasters (CAR, Syria, S. Sudan, etc.) -- but if USA intervenes in war, the USA is committing war crimes in the act of war itself (Drones kill!).
