I just browsed through some of the currently abandoned positions. Most of them are in pretty bad shape. Apparently players that upon getting their ass kicked didn't have the decency and sportsmanship to finish the game.
In fact it happened to me in my very first gunboat game here (
gameID=134319). Italy left at the first sign of setback while still having 4 units. This forced me (France) to divert most my units towards setting up a stalemate in the Med to block the juggernaut that was now rolling my way unopposed. Although I managed to take Rom and Tun, it was obvious that I would only be able to hold on to the latter. It basically ruined any chance I might have had to win the game and had it not been for me and England getting our act together just in time it might have lead to Russia taking an easy solo.
So, I was wondering. What, other than decency and sportsmanship, is the incentive to not abandon a position on this site? Is it supposed to be the points you have bet that will be lost if you abandon? Because for 1 or 2 center positions in decline, those points are basically lost already, and as such losing them is hardly an incentive. Am I missing some other penalty for abandoning a game? Also, does it happen frequently that people abandon their position, or was I just unlucky to meet one such jerk (yes that's you
Kerzhakov) in my first game here?
Also, IMO games with an abandonment would benefit from someone taking over rather than having them remain with a power in CD. We all know that a power in CD can seriously unbalance a game. However, if you want to help out by taking over a position you still have to bet the current worth of the position while many of them are in obvious or even inevitable decline, i.e. you're almost surely going to lose those points. I'm not sure how it affects your GR rating either.
So I was wondering, are abandoned positions frequently taken over on this site? It didn't happen in my game. Or do they generally just remain in CD? If no one takes them over should we consider changing the incentive for doing so. You could for instance let people take them over for free but still get the points if they manage to retain any? That way taking over positions can only gain you points but never lose you points and more people might be inclined to take over.
