That's actually a very interesting idea, semck. Surely streaming services like Netflix could accommodate that fairly easily. I think the bigger issue would be if a movie would have to be officially reviewed several times.

@semck, there is already to a degree with parental controls. But it's more limited to a channel basis for now. Hopefully they will start implementing a way to categorize by rating per show instead of per channel soon. Since that would allow all channels to avoid being blocked for showing a single movie with one inappropriate scene by worried parents using parental controls.

JMO, I meant that ratings-sensitive *scenes* would actually be ommitted from a movie, or replaced if somebody had bothered to do that.

abge, true. I also admit that, if I were a filmmaker, I'd be very hesitant about technologies that made it easy to auto-butcher my work.

Oh, that would be an awesome advance in digital advancement. You wouldn't even need the movie makers or channels to do it, just write a recognition program that would detect key words or...actions and would block with a black screen or audio beep for a moment. Then it could be offered through the provider.

You guys are too young to understand that the censorship is just an excuse to shorten the programs for more commercials. You don't remember back when there were only 10 minutes per hour of commercials and now you are lucky if there are only 18 plus reducing the credits at the end to a partial screen so they can use the time for another commercial announcement for the network or the station.

Censorship is just some PR to appease the FCC and parent groups while they increase their profit margins.

There's no substitute for proper parenting. Auto-censoring of TV isn't going to control what your kids see on the web. Or what they see when someone hands them a dodgy CD/DVD. You can't sub-contract your parenting and expect to get the same results as doing it yourself

@Randomizer - in the UK our commercial channels can only show 7 minutes of adverts between 6pm and 11pm with an average of 8 minutes over the whole day. Our most watched channel (BBC1) doesn't show any adverts but we do pay around £150 per year for this privilage.
