There are 200+ applicants per 1 academic job, dickheads. Many PhDs are on footstamps. But when you can't win an argument, you have to resort to this kind of skullduggery. Typical.

You're filled with hate Invictus. Nothing makes you smile like some country being bombed or somebody's life being ruined.
Hey I don't feel bad skulldugering a skulldugerer.

@ Invictus: Are you denying that the Soviet Union played a huge part in defeating Nazi Germany? Is it your view that anyone who believes the USSR massively contributed to Hitler's defeat should be hated?

Invictus (240 D)

There's no reasonable way to draw that out from what I wrote. Of course the Soviets played a huge part in defeating Nazi Germany. It's his calling the West a joke that makes me incandescent, and should make you that way too. His denial of Soviet war rapes and, I can only assume, all the horrors that Soviet domination wrought on Eastern Europe for the next 45 years is also a reason to think little of him.

The apologists of terror bombing and the nuking of Japan want us all toe kiss their rearends for doing little during WWII while they stab the Red Army in the back and engage in a half century long smear campaign against their legacy after killing 80%+ of the German wehrmacht wardead. They believe every Nazi lie but they cry and cry and cry about respecting service and sacrifice.

the allies use of bombing civilians in wwii was unquestionably the most massive use of terrorism in warfare in human history. LeMay and Truman would have been tried and hanged as war criminals had the US lost. At least Truman went on to regret his decision about the atomic bombs. He was wise enough to fire MacArthur in Korean conflict.

Regarding the whole east front west front bs, I have many times stated that the war was primarily won by the USSR. But, Putin seems to have taken this stance to an extreme. Yes the western allies over emphasized their own roll in the defeat of germany, but does that mean the western front had ZERO impact on outcome of the war as putin is so instant about? Probably the truth is more nuanced the putin's brain allows.

Yes the Russians basically won the war, but by what percentage? 80%? 100%? Would they have won if there had been no western front? Who knows.

Oil from north africa was critical to germany, particularly since they failed to capture the central asian fields. Italy drew down forces from the eastern front. The near encirclement at falaise took out and modest amount of german forces.

Had germany made peace with the UK or somehow neutralized them before invading the USSR the outcome might have been different. It is highly unlikely the US would have staged any operations in ETO had the UK not been in the war.

Just one quibble. It is not true that Germany was dependent on oil from North Africa (oil was not discovered in much of north Africa until well after the war). Germany got oil from Romania, Norway, western Europe, Austria, and the Caucasian oil fields that they occupied in the Soviet Union (not Baku, but Maykop). They also produced a ton of synthetic oil from coal.

". It is not true that Germany was dependent on oil from North Africa )."

Another half-truth and deliberate obstfication from Mr Denial:

On February 11, 1940, Germany and the Soviet Union entered into an intricate trade pact in which the Soviet Union would send Germany 650 million Reichsmarks in raw materials in exchange for 650 million Reichmarks in machinery, manufactured goods and technology.[50][52] The trade pact helped Germany to surmount the British blockade.[2]...................................................................
While some slowdowns and negotiations occurred especially during the early negotiations of specific orders,[3] the Soviet Union met most of its requirements under the agreement.[53] It became a major supplier of vital materials to Germany, including petroleum, manganese, copper, nickel, chrome, platinum, lumber and grain.[57]

Wiki citing Shirer, William L. (1990), The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany, Simon and Schuster, Weeks, Albert L., Stalin's Other War: Soviet Grand Strategy, 1939-1941, Rowman & Littlefield, 2003, Ericson, Edward E. (1999), Feeding the German Eagle: Soviet Economic Aid to Nazi Germany, 1933-1941, Greenwood Publishing Group, Cohen, Yohanon, Small Nations in Times of Crisis and Confrontation, SUNY Press, 1989 and Moss, Walter, A History of Russia: Since 1855, Anthem Press, 2005.

Bear in mind what else was going on on the western front in 1939, 1940 and early 1941, while the Nazis were being supplied from the east by the Russians In that context, assuming for a moment that there was indeed a delay in opening the second front, this would then be just a tad more understandable.

@ Fulhamish: That doesn't mention North African oil at all, what are you on about?
fulhamish (4134 D)

@ Jamie. Oil from North Africa was indeed, not critical for Germany. In the early years of the war, however, oil (and other vital raw materials) sold to the Germans by the USSR was. It was this oil which went a long way to power the Panzers in France, Belgium and Holland and the bombers over London in the Blitz. So not only did the Russians not open a second front they actively helped the Nazi war machine. I think this to be relevant to the discussion on the eastern/western fronts. Sorry for not explaining this more clearly for you.

How does the mute option work in this scenario:
If I mute a player, will it in turn mute any threads he/she may create in the future?

I mute everything in the forum except for game-related or threads (I'm here for the game, not for...that). It takes a chunk of time each day to do that. If I were to mute users rather than threads, would it save me from having to mute any threads they may create in the future?

I've taken a long break from Webdip, but I'm back! I'd like to set up a game: Classic WTA, preferably anonymous but not necessary, and a decent bet (250-750). I'm sending out invitations to some people I've played with in the past, but I'm happy to take on the new crowd. If you like to join, please reply.

Let's say you have a fleet in Tunis and west med, an army in North Africa. You want the army in NA flipped with the fleet Tunis.
What would happen if I ordered Tunis to North Africa; North Africa to Tunis, the army being convoyed there by west med. shouldn't it go through, causing the army to go to Tunis and the fleet going to North Africa?

NFL Pick 'em: Week 12: The Home Stretch Begins
6 weeks left, and they all matter. The 2nd AFC Wild Card team changes by the week, the Chiefs and Broncos look like they'll go down to the wire on the division lead, and 11/16 teams are still within a game or two of the playoffs. In the NFC, the Lions try to hold off the Bears, the Giants suddenly look like they might make it back in a weak NFC East against the Eagles and Cowboys, and my Niners...better right the ship this Monday Night...so pick 'em...

Can Someone Explain Filibustering?
I get the basic premise: if you're in the minority and you feel strongly about something, you can talk for a long time and hopefully bore everyone to death. What I don't understand is why *threatening* to filibuster has the same effect.
