Duane "Dog" Chapman versus Edward "Traitor" Snowden

Is an objective fact racism?
An objective fact is something tangible. The dog is sleeping. You can look and see the dog is sleeping. Richard Dawkins tweeted “all the world’s Muslims have fewer Nobel Prizes than Trinity College, Cambridge." This is an objective fact otherwise referred to as the truth.

Gaming the System-Obamacare
Now that the personal mandate approaches the entrepreneurial spirit of the American populace already discovered a multitude of ways to game the system of Obamacare, much like Food Stamps and Welfare before it. Politically granted waivers seem the most popular. Who has them?

Ecumenical Discussion on Biblical Canon.
I would really like to know why the Protestants cut out six books from the Bible. Start explaining.
philcore (317 D(S))
11 Aug 13 UTC
6 books according to whom? The Catholics? They left some books out too, you know. Notably the gospel of Philip, the hard-core apostle.

Bottom line is whether any of it was divinely inspired, it was ultimately politically inspired which ones got in
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
11 Aug 13 UTC
The "Gospel of Philip" was written by the Gnostic heretics in the third century.

The 72 book canon was the one used universally until the Reformation, when the so-called 'reformers' cut out Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, the Letter of Jeremiah, and Baruch. And Luther tried to cut out a few from the New Testament as well, most notably Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelation

Ah, but what is a heretic, other than someone writing a version of the story which disagrees with cannon? Circular logic, church style. No one really believes that Mark, John, Matthew, and Luke were actually authored by them, do they? Or that the Torah was written by Moses. Men wrote it and men later decided what got in.

Heresy is something that conflicts with divine teaching.

I don't anyone serious that doesn't believe that Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John wrote their gospels.

Same goes for the Pentateuch.
dipplayer2004 (1110 D)

It's my understanding that the Jews themselves don't include these books as part of their canon.

You're already on the internet, Sbyvl36. Just Google a Protestant biblical scholar's explanation.

And when you're done, maybe answer my question of why you think free trade is socialist?
Sbyvl36 (439 D)

I'd like to hear what the Protestant rank-and-file has to say. I already have.
Invictus (240 D)

No you haven't. That's why I was asking in that thread. Answer there.

So you'd rather hear what the Protestant scholars say third hand from internet morons? It's not like the man on the street just knows why the changes were made and has their own justifications for it. Go right to the horse's mouth and read what that splitter Martin Luther wrote on the subject.
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
11 Aug 13 UTC
I'll explain it again here so we can move on with our lives.

Free trade is socialist because it globalizes the trade market, rather than nationalizing it. This opens the door to international trade agreements, which leads to international unions, which leads to a global government.
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
11 Aug 13 UTC
And I'd like to see Protestants on this site defend their removing books from Scripture
Invictus (240 D)
11 Aug 13 UTC
Answer in the other thread. No reason to derail this one.

Well, I don't see the point of asking them to regurgitate what Google tells them the reason was, but if you want to that's fine.
philcore (317 D(S))
11 Aug 13 UTC
Divine teaching is determined by the canon. If it made the cannon, it's divine. If not then its not divine. And if it contradicts one that did, then it's heretical. But the canon was still decided upon by men, who then claimed it was divine.

And you really think Moses actually wrote the first 5 of the OT? Because a lot of that contradicts itself! That would make it heretical and divine?

You can read the flood story and see that there are two separate stories there which have been blended. Were there 2 of each animal? Or were there 7 of some?
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
11 Aug 13 UTC
Do you have any examples?

Where did it say 7?

Missed the part about Moses writing the first five books. Catholics don't even have to believe that. You're just being willfully ignorant, Sbyvl36. I mean, Moses dies in the Pentateuch! How could he write that?
Sbyvl36 (439 D)
11 Aug 13 UTC
Actually, I saw the part about 7.

How long was the flood? 40 days or 150?

There are 2 separate accounts, one of which always refers to did as "yahweh" and the other as "elohim". Each is a self-contained, and by itself, consistent story, obviously telling the same tale. But being written down at different times and by different people with different traditions. A great book on the subject is "who wrote the bible?" By Richard Friedman, who is a Jewish Hebrew scholar. A religious person who believes in the content of the book he has dedicated his life to studying. He just doesn't believe the tradition that says that moses wrote the Torah.
philcore (317 D(S))

"refers to did as" = "refers to God as"
Sbyvl36 (439 D)

Thats a contradiction. It says in the Pentateuch that Moses wrote it. However, as Joshua co-authored in several places, it is likely that he finished it.
Sbyvl36 (439 D)

And it rained for 40 days, but the entire flood was 150.
Invictus (240 D)
12 Aug 13 UTC
So... you believe that there was a worldwide Flood? How?
philcore (317 D(S))
12 Aug 13 UTC
(+1)
@invictus: if you believe it was God's doing, you don't need to answer the question "how?". Are you looking for a scientific reason? One isn't needed for the believer.

I'm not even arguing the reality of the flood, just the authorship of the book that tells us about it. The epic of gilgamesh actually told the same story 500 years before the accepted date of Moses and 1200 years prior to the earliest copy of the Torah thought to be written.
Sbyvl36 (439 D)

Every Middle-eastern civilization talked about the Flood, Invictus. And if you want to know "How?", then read the Bible
Draugnar (0 DX)

@sbyvyl: " But civilization was limited to the M-E at that time"

I think a lot of Indians, Chinese and meso/south-americans would take offense at that. I leave out egypt, because it can be considered M-E, or at least in the biblical knowledge at the time. But there were thriving civilizations elsewhere in the world that didn't mention a global flood.

Sbyvl must be a Biblical literalist who believes Adam and Eve existed and weren't just an origin story.
Invictus (240 D)
12 Aug 13 UTC
(+4)
I meant "how" as in how can someone believe that there was a global flood. There is no geological evidence for it. At all. No wooden boat the size of the ark could survive in the rough waters caused by such a flood. If we believe in a global flood we have to believe kangaroos conveniently went all the way back to Australia instead of staying by Mount Ararat. And that humanity was able to recover in just a few hundred years despite being pared down to eight people. You just have to ignore so, so much of reality to even consider that a global flood was a literal event.

Again, Sbyvl36 is displaying some really supererogatory biblical interpretation for a Catholic. The Catholic Church does not have a literalist interpretation of the Bible, and never has going back all the way to second century Church Fathers. The important part is the lesson imparted by the story of Noah, not whether it was a literal historic event we can take our DeLorean back to and watch. It's that important and beautiful message that gets completely lost when people focus on a literal interpretation.
