Words that are easy to say but hard to live by
I think we all have principles that we believe in that we have trouble following. Here's one of mine--These words from Paul's letter to the Christians in Philippi are close to 2000 years old and still carry tremendous meaning: Philippians 4:6-7. What are yours?

Should We Feel bad for Refusing to Draw Out for 10 years?
gameID=111449 I bought in high, and flubbed a solo run. Once stalemate lines were drawn, I just couldn't live with Germany getting a piece of the draw. However, though I retreated in 1913, England England refused to execute him... I understand loyalty, but I refused to end the game. Germany CD'ed in 1925 making both of our stands on principle moot.

A Request for a Generous Mod
Hello,

I have a request for a trustworthy individual. Draugnar will have to agree to the individual (and to participate in this). It will take probably over an hour or more of your time, but the site will make $100.

Minor bug
Several times in a game of mine, in the list of players at the bottom, it has shown that France is muted when I never muted France. I believe it has only happened when I've been in Russia's messages. When I switch to a different country's messages, it goes away, and doesn't come back when I switch back to Russia's. It's possible that it only happened when I'm first viewing the game after a new turn has began, but I'm not sure.

Shameless Point Grubbing Game
As per below

Al Swearengen (0 DX)
27 Apr 13 UTC
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I write to inquire which, if any of you, would have interest in taking part in a point grubbing game. The entire focus of this game would be similar to the point of a high stakes poker game. That is to say, we (the stronger players) would be shamelessly attempting to exploit the weaker players for points. The game would ideally by anonymous live full press. Obviously the game would have a high (point value) buy-in. We could additionally enjoy the benefit of having the senior players scoff at us for attempting to procure points in the same manner that they must have accrued points, while loudly pretending to be better than us.

Gentlemen, this will be shamelessness at it's best.

So you're looking for weak players to steal points from? Count me in :)

This is a good point, we should encourage all noobs to play in 100 point a player games so that they put a few more points in circulation. It is the Webdip equivalent of quantitive easing/getting credit and then spending it all with no intention or ability to pay it back ..... any noobs fancy a 99 point buy-in gunboat?

Interesting, Al. Does that mean you generally try to ally with those you see as the most competent rather than those you find easiest to manipulate or those you just happen to get along with?

Also, what counts as a senior player? I'd always just put it down to a mix of games played and time spent as a member, but other people seem to use different measures. It often amuses me how Nigs puts so much emphasis on that silly gold disk of his as a measure of his contribution to the site when he never or rarely mentions that his contribution in terms of numbers of well fought games is truly huge and rather impressive.

I don't see how this game would be any different from any game I play here.

I learnt to play this game online the hard way ...... by not reading the rules and playing every game to win or die, I learnt the support/hold function about 150 games in and the convoy some games later, it was obviously a poor short term strategy leading to terrible stats and low GR and no points, but I tried in every game and most of my CDs were falling asleep mid-game at the pc whilst playing at 3am or 4am in the morning.
I don't mind if people don't contribute to the site as long as they don't mind me pointing out they are cheapskates, quid pro quo.
Anyway I think we should encourage noobs to play lots of live games using all of their points, it doesn't matter to them if they lose as they get replenished back to 100. If they win they get a great start with loads of points, we should actively encourage this high-pot strategy IMHO.

Octavius - Thank you for soliciting my opinion. I'm caught off guard by this. There are plenty of better players around to collect strategic advice from. Nonetheless, I actually tend to form treaties based around situational ethics. I don't form alliances. I tend to view my fellow diplomacy players as falling into one of two categories - victims and servants.

You did raise the issue of likeability, and to confess this does absolutely inform my decision making, but usually towards the end game. There can be no better motive, in my opinion, for murdering a fellow player than them not having troubled themself to have observed social grace. And I am frequently willing to spare or even defend a player, even a weak player, who has been properly flattering, useful and obedient.

You also put to me the question of how to recognize senior players from junior, one which I am most singularly unqualified to answer. I could be prepared to reply that I know senior players when I see them, but that is of course a cop out.

Are there any other players interested in joining, either as raiders or as victims?

Ancient Med Stats?
Does anybody have any win/ draw stats for ancient med games? I know it's quite a balanced map but does any country fare notably better or worse than the others, such as can be seen with Italy in Classic, and South Africa in World etc.
Just by looking at the map I feel like Greece and Egypt might be worst off, despite my only ever solo on this site coming from Greece.

Aldy has done so much for this site, code wise, I think he has to be the most trustworthy of all our members, right up there with Kestas. I know the mdos and admins don't use popularity in their decision, but maybe they could add his name to consideration next time around.
