Words that are easy to say but hard to live by
I think we all have principles that we believe in that we have trouble following. Here's one of mine--These words from Paul's letter to the Christians in Philippi are close to 2000 years old and still carry tremendous meaning: Philippians 4:6-7. What are yours?

Should We Feel bad for Refusing to Draw Out for 10 years?
gameID=111449 I bought in high, and flubbed a solo run. Once stalemate lines were drawn, I just couldn't live with Germany getting a piece of the draw. However, though I retreated in 1913, England England refused to execute him... I understand loyalty, but I refused to end the game. Germany CD'ed in 1925 making both of our stands on principle moot.

Hello,

I have a request for a trustworthy individual. Draugnar will have to agree to the individual (and to participate in this). It will take probably over an hour or more of your time, but the site will make $100.

Minor bug
Several times in a game of mine, in the list of players at the bottom, it has shown that France is muted when I never muted France. I believe it has only happened when I've been in Russia's messages. When I switch to a different country's messages, it goes away, and doesn't come back when I switch back to Russia's. It's possible that it only happened when I'm first viewing the game after a new turn has began, but I'm not sure.

I give up. Seriously. You trade Revis for draft picks, maybe help a pathetic offense, and you draft... a corner and a defensive tackle. It sucks being a Jets fan.

As a Buc fan, all I have to say to Jetsfan is....THANK YOU! Saw Revis at the stadium last night for the draft party and he is even more awesome in person. He will instantly make our entire defense better. Much better.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

The Jets have a defensive coach and are a defensive-minded team. They don't need to win the Super Bowl next year. The defense comes first, no matter how bad the offense is.

Revis will be a Ronde Barber-esque player, but it's still the Bucs offense that will have to win in that division. With the Saints and Falcons having excellent offenses and the Panthers having a growing offense again, Revis won't make their defense tops in the league. They'll still have to score.
jimgov (219 D(B))
26 Apr 13 UTC
@bo - Well...the Jets have a defensive coach this year. If it turns out like everyone predicts, Ryan will be shown the door after this season. They have regressed each of the past 3 years as a team, and the defense has slipped to #20 in points per game in the NFL. Not great.

The Bucs are young and have potential. Freeman will drive you mad at times, but I wouldn't trade him for Sanchez. That dude is just getting worse by the minute. And as for making the defense better, Revis is joined by Goldston from the 49ers, which is an instant upgrade to a weak secondary.

Trust me, I have no intention of declaring that this is the year that the Bucs win it all, but they will be competitive and in the conversation for post season. After the last few years, that is a major upgrade.

The fact that Rex Ryan is still there and the GM isn't suggests that they are putting the blame elsewhere for now. If they are doing that, they need to stick with Rex and do the things that he thinks will help make the team better. That means that they have to get their defense going again and find offense down the line.

They play in a division with Tom Brady as it is - even when he retires the Pats will still be good - and now EJ Manuel, who I think is going to be Cam Newton reborn (a big version of Russell Wilson maybe), is ready to come in and make a difference. I can still see the Bills going out and taking Tyler Wilson or another QB in rounds 3-5, going the route of the Redskins with RG3 and Cousins last year. The Dolphins have a growing threat in Tannehill and could be a good team in the next few years again. I know I attribute division to everything, but you play 8 division games a year, and unlike college where you can go 3-5 in your conference and end up in a bowl game, your division play in the NFL matters as a tiebreaker.

Simply put: the Jets have to grow their defense to contain and then the offense to win. You need to tie before you win though.

The Bucs are in another division where the situation is quite the opposite. I get the Revis trade, I like it, I think it was a good investment, but it is not about to bring them from fourth to first, nor is Gholson. Josh Freeman is an excellent QB already with even more room to grow and I think he will.
jimgov (219 D(B))
26 Apr 13 UTC
@bo - Take a look at the divisions. The Jets play in the easier of the two by far. Sure, you have to play Brady twice a year, but you also get the Bills and the Dolphins. We have to play the Falcons and Saints twice each. Both are powerhouse offensive teams. And Cam brings another problem into the mix. The Bucs need defense to win. That is how we got our Super Bowl. The Jets, I believe, could increase their offensive capacity and go further. And Ryan is operating on a his final year contract with no extension. That, in NFL terms, is win or get fired.

I bet manti te'o feels like complete crap for not going first round.....

I am questionable about the Detriot Lions first round pick and the Miami Dolphins. Ziggy Ansah for Detroit? From BYU? Why didn't they take a SC defense man from LSU such as Barkevious Mingo? Also for Miami? Dion Jordan when he only played 45% of the Oregon ducks snaps? Risky pick for both of them.
jimgov (219 D(B))
26 Apr 13 UTC
Nothing was as risky as the Bills taking E.J. Manuel. That one came out of left field. He was rated down around the 4th round on most boards. And what about no running back in the 1st round? Hasn't happened in 50 years.
DetriotTigers (0 DX)
26 Apr 13 UTC
That is true forgot about that pick! Why would the bills NOT take matt Barkley from USC? He has the ability to run, throw, and he is very accurate?
DetriotTigers (0 DX)
26 Apr 13 UTC
Not that E.J Manuel doesn't have ability to do the same, it's just Matt Barkley was all around a better thrower and rusher
jimgov (219 D(B))

The shine came off Barkley this year. He should have left college last year and he would have been top 10. He got exposed this year and there are some serious concerns about him. The more time scouts get to look at a QB, the more warts they find.

What about the sensation from Wisconsin Montee Ball? A beastly running back who can juke, and plow people out of his way? Also Kenyon Barner from Oregon?

As a Vikings fan, I have to say that I'm full of nervous optimism after our incredible first-round haul. We traded quantity for quality, turning a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th into another 1st-rounder. I think our #23 pick (Floyd) was a steal -- he was predicted to be a top-5 draft -- and he should help maintain the strength of our defensive line. The #25 pick (Rhodes) should be an excellent addition to the secondary. The big question is whether Patterson will be worth the loss of a couple depth-drafts... Still, after the success Spielman has had thusfar, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
As a P12 fan: Matt Barkley just isn't that good. If he had left last year, he would have made more money. By staying a year, he had a chance to improve as a player. Either way, I don't expect him to last in the pros. I think the Bills (and everyone else) were right to pass on Barkley in the first round. The NFL careers of Mark Sanchez, Matt Leinart, and Matt Cassell probably aren't helping Barkley either.

Floyd was a nice pickup for the VIkes.

TB may still be the worst team in their division. I'm not seeing playoffs there.

Jets are going nowhere with Sanchez at QB.

Agreed with the jets!
Jetsfan2431 (257 D)

Normally, I'd take exception to that, but at this point.... you're right. The Jets can't keep that defense off the field. And three first round defensive linemen in three years does us zero good. I almost wonder if this was deliberate sabotage so they can scapegoat Rex and get rid of him. I don't get it. Why trade the best corner in football for an unproven rookie and a third round pick? We suck.
On a side note, congrats Vikes fan. My uncle coaches for them, and I think he was pretty pumped about how the draft went. It's looking good this year.

@Detroit .. Ziggy Ansah is a JPP-type pick. He is a freakish (insanely) athlete with a limited background but a humongous upside. If they coach him right, you'll know his name for a long time. Dion Jordan was more questionable but the Dolphins obviously liked him a lot to make the moves they made to get him. Same goes for the Bills with Manuel. I think he's got higher upside than Barkley but I hope they find someone to fill in for a year because he isn't ready yet and that's what's crashed a bunch of guys in the past.

Eddie Lacy was the best back in this draft. I'm shocked how many people went before him, and frankly, I was pushing for Indy to take him at 24. I think he'll be a bruiser, maybe not one with a long career, but one that can get the job done. Giovani Bernard is another great RB. Montee Ball in Denver is as good a fit as he could have found (maybe Washington with Shanahan would be better but John Fox and co are just as good there).

@jim ... EJ Manuel was a calculated risk of sorts. The biggest risk of the first round in my mind is Dion Jordan. Manuel's got the basic fundamentals and he has the work ethic to make himself a good QB.

Barkley, like THM observantly said, is simply not a great QB. I doubt he'll amount to much and I think that Carson Palmer is the outlier in USC QB production. Mike Glennon, once a nobody, just went before him. The team that I thought would pick him (NYJ in the second round) also has their QB in Geno.

@jm ... I like the pick for Floyd. He'll be pretty good for a long time. I doubt he'll grow into one of the Williams brothers but he'll hold his own and that's all you ask. I do agree that they shouldn't trade so many picks away, but still, all those first rounders should amount to something.

Ancient Med Stats?
Does anybody have any win/ draw stats for ancient med games? I know it's quite a balanced map but does any country fare notably better or worse than the others, such as can be seen with Italy in Classic, and South Africa in World etc.
Just by looking at the map I feel like Greece and Egypt might be worst off, despite my only ever solo on this site coming from Greece.
