The best books of all time
I've been working on a list of the supposed "best books of all time" to act as a sort of reading list for myself. I finished it tonight and I figured I'd post it here to see what people think.

@dharma: ive been trying to read the stranger for a while now, slow progress, its really not drawing me in. so i think you could be right there.

@mcbry: do you mean to say that if someone has not heard of one single book, then their opinion of the many thousands of other books they may have read is worthless?

Let's not go down this path of their being a 'right' opinion. I WILL use the H*TL*R word.

I was hoping we could get through this conversation without that happening, but I guess I should know better.

I have NO IDEA 'why' L'Étranger is so fussed over - maybe linked with Sartre & the existential B.S. !

& his The Plague is superiror ...
I majored in English but not literature. Do we clash? :-)
the above was @ abgemacht

@ abge Good. taking myself down a few notches, I can say with a clear conscious that the authors you mentioned I've either read and enjoyed or are new additions to my need-to-read list . I really don't want to piss anyone off, but I promise not to try to teach you anything about engineering either.

"ask them about Dick" LOL!

satre was such a poser, but things never change, today its 'the secret' or 'eat pray love'. tasty tasty BS.

Isn't it almost necessary to be existentialist to be a 19th/20th century writer?

It pervades virtually every novel in this period, I think. Indeed, the aforementioned Philip K. Dick is steeped in existentialism.

@CA

Yes, but not because of your degree : )

I find I usually get along well with English majors, but not literature majors.

an obscure one about greek gods - creation myth - and the death of our world' - forgot title & author!
would love to find it again... the 'hero' near the end, lingering in the (greek) forests with sad satyrs signing: 'the world is ending...' (as we know it...)
or something to that tune...
I liked the idea of the novels that formed us. Dr. Seuss has to be one of the great authors by that standard ;-)
@ abgemacht

Oddly enough I majored in English and got along very well with engineers. (Not so much with literature majors.)

Oh, can I change my list, because the Lorax is probably my favorite book ever!
Yes we definitely need engineers who've read the Lorax.

Yeah, it's weird. You wouldn't expect it, but it seems to be a common trend.

@putin - the pk Dick observation is quite clear - KUDO !

BTW

...'my favourite book is 'Boddhidharma's First Sermon' ' - !!! LOL !!!
I see we're going to have to go back to the basics on that one :-S

@Fiedler Make my day.

@Putin: yes. Camus for me was my introduction to existentialism. That doesn't make him special for anyone but me.

awesome, so we can write in all nice things of course!
@ abgemacht

I was actually avoiding that as there are so many books named here that I doubt many of us know which ones have and haven't been mentioned.

I've given my opinion on a couple and really don't have much time tonight.
I was glad to see Beowulf and the Saga of Sigurd mentioned. I'd probably enter some far eastern Titles "A Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi, "The Master of Go" etc. just to pull it a bit toward the east.

"The Book of Job" is certainly worth reading from a literary perspective whether you revere it as canonical Scripture or not.

the best book ever written is 1984, and if you haven't read it consider yourself retarded! but in a lighter note it is a must read.

Happy Channukah! (a day late...) ;) And Christmas to come...but controversy--DOES Santa Claus really exist? What are public-messaging-only games like?
In your experience, do players in public-messaging-only games choose to ally and coordinate in full view of the other players, or is it more like a gunboat game but with the ability to negotiate draws amongst opposing factions, etc? Or somewhere in between?
