So the lines are stabilizing. Libya needs 49 centers to win, I don't see him getting there. He's at 37, even if he gets all of South America he's got a chokepoint into NA, and a pretty solid ring of units around him elsewhere.

The game is currently paused, and the reason appears to be that Libya doesn't want the result of this one to affect another he is playing. I find that logic to be... questionable, and apparently is based on the assumption that he will be jumped once his identity is revealed. I'm not privy to all the information, but I don't personally think "I don't want people to know who I am" is a legitimate reason to continue with a pause - and if Libya is that concerned with his image, I would submit that holding the game hostage is more likely to tick people off long term than letting people know who he (or she) is now. But that's just me

The public press is dramalicious. I intend to ignore it for now.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
03 Nov 10 UTC
That's not why I paused it.
I paused it before that request came through, because letting it play I felt it was possible Lybia would solo and there is still strong debate on the fair result.

Once that debate clears I expect to unpause it
figlesquidge (2131 D)
03 Nov 10 UTC
Having checked previous page, thanks for the input MM.
As I've said since then I think the one truely wrong result would be to force a draw now. If the game was unfair due to convoy issue's it hasn't suddenly become so and thus people should take it how it went.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
03 Nov 10 UTC
Sounds like an abuse of power to me, figle, what the hell? If Kestas and/or the powers that be are willing to put a "broken" game on this site for people to join, you have absolutely no right to pause it when it gets down to the end and you think one person gains an advantage from the game being "broken". Yeah, that's total bs, from my uninformed perspective.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
03 Nov 10 UTC
I didn't say that was the reason the game was paused, fig, I said that was the reason Libya states he does not want to *unpause*
MadMarx (36299 D(G))

Cross post.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
03 Nov 10 UTC
Cross post as in wrong window? Or that you're angry?

As mentioned above, I paused the game to prevent it ending whilst people were talking to me about it. Some felt it should be canceled etc, and this cannot currently be done if the game finishes. It would seem that these issues have sorted and thus I expect to unpause it.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
03 Nov 10 UTC
Cross post in that my response was to strat's post and I did not see your two posts just before mine. I wouldn't say I'm angry, just trying to make a point since I don't agree with what's going on, though I admit to not know all that is going on.

It's funny how people have no problem playing the game when they are doing well and things are going how they want, but if all of a sudden someone goes for a solo THEN they are adamant about how the game should be canceled, WTF?! I can understand putting in a lot of time in a game and being frustrated with it being broken, but the game was broken the whole time and that's the fault of that game being put on this site and allowing people to join the game. If someone gains an advantage from a broken game late, it's not like that person gaining the advantage did anything wrong, I think you have to finish what you started and learn that you shouldn't join that type of game anymore if you don't like it and its shortcomings.

I just read all the 'global' tab posts for the past week... holy cow... dramalicious was not good enough of a word ;)

I'm now VERY curious to know who PR is/was!

Pete U (293 D)
03 Nov 10 UTC
Not much to add to Strat's analysis. Libya's solo bid has failed. No-one else is in a realistic position to make a solo bid. The only question now is whether or not Arg stays in the draw.

The global tab has been ... interesting, and I can't wait to 1) find out who all the players were, and 2) read the EOGs
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
03 Nov 10 UTC
Holy crap, figured I'd read some of the global stuff too, but got bored once PR and China started going back and forth. Anyway, sounds like my complaint was covered a bit in the game. As always, I assume my two cents will be ignored, I just can't imagine why a game would get paused near the end over an issue that came up much earlier.

I am also disappointed in flashman's metagaming threats, I'm confident flashman will allow this game to affect another game that he is playing with Libya, the mods may need to consider banning flashman from this site for metagaming.

I think people are getting douchetacular, personally. While I don't really have a stake here, I think it's reasonable to unpause
Pete U (293 D)
04 Nov 10 UTC
Its moving again, but convoys back mean Europe should hold the line, and the Libyan navy has been pushed back. Even with 3 more builds, I don't see a solo now. I also don't think Libya can force the rest to eliminate Argentina, but I worry we may see more drawn out turns before the end. That might get interesting in 5 years time or so, but not now
Babak (26982 D(B))
05 Nov 10 UTC
i've studied the map and the possibilities Libya has... but I dont want to comment on the game since I'm not an official commentator, and technically I was in the game so I should not comment... but I was curious if the official commenters wanted to edify us as to stalemate lines or if that would be a) too much work and b) too specific.

could be fun to speculate =P
Pete U (293 D)
05 Nov 10 UTC
Babak, I wish I had the time to work out where any potential stalemate lines are. Some I'm going for a)
stratagos (3269 D(S))
05 Nov 10 UTC
I'm going with A as well ;)

I think this is going to drag on for awhile - Libya has other reasons for wanting to draw things out besides wiping Argentina, and I would see the others keeping Argentina around out of spite in any case.

The question really is "can they wipe Libya" - I don't have time to determine if it's theoretically possible, or if everyone else wants to drag things out *even longer* to get vengeance. If it *is* feasible, then it's going to be a balancing act for Libya - past a certain point one of the other nations is going to withdraw the vote and decide that Libya is either weak enough to be easy prey *or* they're so annoyed by the drawing-out process they decide a longer delay to wipe him is worth it.
Pete U (293 D)
05 Nov 10 UTC
Strat - I think it's *theoretically* possible they could wipe Libya - I actually think he has to pick his builds very carefully indeed, because things could go south incredibly quickly.

Of course, with 30+ centres, that could push someone else towards a solo.

I also agree it's going to carry on for a while. That'll give me time to write an outside critique of 17 countries play, and see if i can't find a few 'could have done betters'
flashman (2274 D(G))
06 Nov 10 UTC
Thanks Madmarx for misinterpreting my message.

I will not metagame if Lybia is present because, as stated clearly in the Global tag, I will never play with Lybia again. He is on my blacklist, pure and simple. I will not play with those who deliberately allow external factors - such as a problem with the code, to give them an advantage. Once a problem is discovered, it has to be dealt with by the players at that time. The convoy problem was critical and made a major difference. Nobody's fault that it happened, but playing on was unacceptable to me and as I control my own blacklist, I really believe I have the casting vote.

Feel free to start your own list and put me on it. I have very strict principles and they will not change.
flashman (2274 D(G))
06 Nov 10 UTC
Oh, and just in case you didn't realise: I am not in another game with Lybia: he mixed me up with someone else. I have only two on-going games listed against my name: this World Map and Face-to-Face 2 which has been paused for about 21 months. As I am out of the World Game (long ago), you will see that my opportunities to metagame with anyone are somewhat constrained.

Indeed, I am waiting for the GRs to be finally put to rest, or we are given an option to have games that do not count towards GRs before I am likely to become active again. My thoughts on GRs are well-known and I do think it is part of the problem in this World Game.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
06 Nov 10 UTC
Flash, I am not faulting you for your decision. I'm not even really faulting Libya's decision not to draw yet. My statement was simply that Libya's choice to drag things out for external reasons may influence the active players to take him all the way out if they can. Were I playing it certainly would annoy the snot out of *me*!
flashman (2274 D(G))
07 Nov 10 UTC
I know - it was MM above who named me for for potential meta-gaming. He has read Lybia's comment in the Global where Lybia has wrongly identified me as someone he is playing with in another game.

I had though it was cleared up.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
07 Nov 10 UTC
It was flash, but in his defence he posted that message before you clarified ingame.
Anyway, I've been watching and don't worry - I have no intention of banning you!

As mentioned around, I agree with your analysis, but also feel that by the time the problem was brought to my attention it was unfair to cancel the game.

ps: flash, see PMs
Pete U (293 D)

Spring is done, and it looks like Argentina has finally bitten the dust, plus the push-back of Libya continues. No solo for him.
Well the game is over - let the EOG statements begin :)
Thanks to Pete U and stratagos for the amazing commentary - particularly in the early years when so much was going on.
Congratulations to each of those in the final draw - and a special thanks to USA and Europe (rdrivera2005 and Babak) for working so closely with me on the resistance to Lybia in the final years.
While it is well documented I was unhappy with certain system problems and the way they impacted on the game - it was a hard fought game that I enjoyed immensely for the majority of the time.
It will take me some time to put together a sensible EOG statement, but before others made any comments I wanted to follow through on the promise I made in the global chat following figle's ruling - and therefore hereby unreservedly apologise to Lybia for the accusations of cheating in respect of the convoying problems.
Look forward to reading all the EOGs, contributing my own in due course, and playing each of you again at some point.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Free As a (Causally-Determined) Bird
Right, so "causality" is apparently a four-letter word with my Philosophy of Religion professor, as for him there is absolutely no hearing an argument agaisnt free will, the whole, weeks-long discussion was led by him and emhpasized not IF we can have free will but rather HOW we DO have free will, ie, is it God, science, a balance, and on...so I present it to you, the WebDip Philosophical Community--CAN we have free will, if so to what degree, and if not, why, and is there any point to life?

Rhyming game
This variant of the game seems like it can be a lot of fun. I had the pleasure of seeing one unfold about a year ago. Since I havent been on this site in so long, I have no idea if this has become a common trait among different games on this site now.
The rules are exactly the same as a normal dip game, but with one exception.
if you want to say something, you have to make it rhyme.
