This thread needs a "Sage" function.
For those who don't know, on *ahem* various imageboards I deny visiting, if you want to tell someone their thread is idiotic or that they're idiotic without bumping the thread, you can "sage" it, wherein you say whatever you want and type "sage" as your email address and your post will not bump the thread.

Obviously, we would need a different way of doing that since we have emails tied to accounts, but... yeah. It would be a nice function.

civil disorders are part of the internet game.
the point is that you cant imply that people lack intelligence if they dont great at their first diplomacy games. according to akroma 90% of the players here are fools
Akroma (967 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
well, you need to be intelligent to be able to think several turns ahead, you need to be intelligent to be able to predict and manipulate other players, you need to be intelligent to make up believable lies, etc.

in diplomacy, luck and coincidence play no role. only the best players win.

except of course if they play as submariner, and refuse to pause a game, so they can fight against enemies that are idle

I am fairly new to this game myself. I have so far played less games than you, and not a single game IRL. So for all that matters, you are the one who has more experience in this game than me.

yet, on the ghost-rating, I am on spot 15 (likely to climb higher soon), while you are at place 1017.

I have as much defeats as you have wins (though a third is not going to be added soon)

diplomacy is a game that needs careful planning and thinking. In a way, it is comparable to chess. You need to think ahead, faaar, far ahead (and I might point out, you have to watch more than just one player), and the best players in it can't decide on the best way to play it. each game is different, and only the smart ones win.

I am a good example that one doesn't need experience to win, all that is needed is something in your head.

you claim to have that, but I honestly can't bring myself to think of you as someone who is smarter than 93% of the worlds population
Akroma (967 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
and yes, from the look of it, 90% of the people here are fools. It's the internet, what did you expect, professors for aerodynamics and airplanes ?
hellalt (24 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
you seem to forget that in diplomacy you are dependent of other people, something that doesnt happen at chess.
for example if you are austria and turkey russia and italy decide right from the start to kill you, there is nothing you can do about. i d say diplomacy really isnt about luck but there is great amount of randomness. also diplomacy is a game that features social networks. i dont see any resemblance at all with chess. chess is the king of the mind games.
so, what if you are that good at a board game? you want me to treat you candy? it would be wise to get prepared to confront the next wave of attacks that will come after you after your last tastement
;)
Akroma (967 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
haha, typical loser statement.

your are not dependent on them, they are dependent on you.
if you play your cards right, that is.
if you are a good diplomat, it won't happen that everyone gangs up on you from the start.

and when it happens, it is not "tough luck"
it's just you failing to convince them to attack someone else
it's not "random" either. if you are suprised by someones moves, it's again you failing at this game.

and there is plenty that can be done about that.
look at GFDT round two, game 1

in the first years, everybody ganged up against austria. and now see what happens. he is not only surviving, he is having a comeback.

saying that "there is nothing that could be done" is something for losers. If you say "I tried my best, but it didn't work", now that is fine. But there is always something that can be done
OMGNSO (415 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
You stop IRT from attacking Austria by convincing them not to attack you: social intelligence. I don't know how clever Hellalt and Sub actually are, but this social inteligence is the type which Sub proves he hasn't got, on a regular basis.
hellalt (24 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
social intelligence didn't help you that much at
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=10655
theoretically you can achieve everything and convince everyone at diplomacy.
there is a game a had a draw with themastergamer and another one. so what?
in chess the best player always wins. in diplomacy not always.
just because there isn't a dice doesn't mean you can compare it with chess
Akroma (967 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
so he lost in that game, so what ?

and you are reduced to a single unit sitting in sevastopol, and will soon meet the same fate. glass houses, stones, you found a way to combine them.

also, in diplomacy, the best player is the one who can have a draw whenever he wants one. It's not like a draw is a loss. it's just a win with more than one winner.
Akroma (967 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
I might also point out that OMGNSO has had more wins than you, less defeats and more draws.

if you want to mock him, make sure that you are in the position to do that.

I've played with him before, and I must say, out of the 6 other players in that game, he was my best opponent. If it wasn't for him taking over a CD in a pretty bad situation, then I would be sure it would have been a challenge for me to defeat him.

that boy has some potential. more than you, that's for sure
hellalt (24 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
i really don't get your point akroma.
you want to compare chess with diplomacy?
you want to prove you are the best player?
what the hell is your problem dude?
keep your opinion for yourself
hellalt (24 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
well in the game i ve played with OMGNSO i simply kicked his ass before i had mine kicked as well
hellalt (24 D)

hellalt (24 D)

Akroma (967 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
oh, I just love trolling as much as you do, but unlike you, I pick my targets with care.
nothing is as fun as trolling a troll.
not only are they easy to troll, but also trolling them is publicaly sanctioned.

also, you didn't really kick his ass.

the entire time, your were dependent on turkey to help you kick his ass. then when you noticed that you were unable to defeat england and france, you decided to stab your only ally, and that stab was not even successful.

my point is that your claim of being of above average intelligence strongy contrasts your very, very poor performance in diplomacy.

who knows, maybe your IQ really is high, but it seems you fail at using it.
hellalt (24 D)
27 Jun 09 UTC
my performance in diplomacy is not poor, it's above average (ranked 1017 among 10.000 players).
what is fairly high is your egoism and self confidence
I wonder though if there is something more than diplomacy to back it up... Don't you have anything better to do than (stupidly) analyzing other player's games and pretending to be the master gamer?
Well your good win percentage will certainly fall. everyone reading this thread will just know "lets keep an eye at the akroma stallion" and when they meet you at a game they ll just conspire and kill you in 2 years.
ps: Want to try a real intelligence game? let's play some chess at yahoo games or anywhere you want with a bet (so that it hurts more).

Akroma (967 D)

games are primarily for fun. And since you are a rather annoying fellow, I have no intention to play with you, may it be diplomacy, chess, or anything.

and I insist, your performance is poor. 3 succesfull games against 19 games that were unsuccessfull.

I might also point out that the list counts every account that ever finished a game. If you think about how many people just play a single game and after that don't come back here, and that out of these people, 6 out of 7 have lost, then you will soon notice that comparing yourself to the bottom-half of of the chart is grossly inappropriate. I really suck at tennis, but I have played a few games before. Even won one of those games. I am probably better at tennis than several billion people. doesn't mean my performance at tennis is not bad.

if you want too take a look at better performances, slowly go upwards the list. You won't fail to notice that most of the people with a higher rating managed to achieve this rating with a lot less games completed.
heck, take a look at those that are just slightly below you. most of them managed to get a rating almsot as high as yours, while playing a lot less games.

if you want to objectively rate the average performance of a player, first, compare yourself to the 100 above you, and the 100 below you.

everything else taints the average.

I don't really have much money avaiable. compared to africa, I am still rich.

it *does* matter to whom you compare yourself.

I am no saint, but hey, if I compare myself to those that are worse than me, of course I will look better.

and for your question, no I don't have anything better to do right now. your angry responses are fun to read, and as some people on the forum have stated, many agree. it's like watching a trainwreck in slow motion. you know, it won't end well, but you can't help it but read through every new post.

so here I am. I am bored, waiting for some diplomacy coming from people in different timezones, and have a lot of spare-time to kill because a friend of mine had a pipe in his bathroom break and now is too busy to go out with me instead.

what's your excuse ?

Invictus (240 D)

"it would be wise to get prepared to confront the next wave of attacks that will come after you after your last tastement
;)"

What kind of a lawyer spells "testament" wrong, hellalt?

What's so funny about rlumley allegedly raising canaries? Seems like a pretty innocent hobby to me.

I also notice you stopped making the "say hello to your mother for me" comments once I called you out on it being a lame joke from Mark Wahlberg on SNL.

So what's your deal anyway? Making SNL references makes me thing you at least don't live in Greece, and the fact that you seem to find the show funny would suggest that you hardly have a 120 IQ.

It's also hard to beleive a lawyer would be such a troll. Lawyers make their living by being careful with their words, something you don't do at all.

Was your field of study in law school aerodynamics and airplanes?
