So How Does This "Football" Of Yours WORK, World?
I can't escape this World Cup thing... my Bio professor (like a lot of my good professors I've had) is from another land he's football-mad, every second that's not about Bio is a joke or about how awesome football is, how he used to love playing goalie... but I DON'T GET IT! I mean, most of the games so far have been TIES- why is this so popular? (How does this game even WORK? A clock counting up, all these rules...?) Football lovers- explain? :)

A Game With Teams (Europe Map)
I'm experimenting with a new game where there are three main teams, and the center nations are going to be England (Allies), Russia (Communist), and Germany (Axis). If you want to join a team, you have to ask them in private and declare them on the global chat if they say yes. They also have to confirm it on Global Chat.

What Shall We Do With a Drunken Player?
What shall we do with a drunken player, What shall we do with a drunken player, What shall we do with a drunken player,
Whose forgotten his turn?

No Backstabbing
Anyone interested in a game where you have to declare war on someone before you move into his/her territories (both SCs and Non-SCs) three hours before the turn end and 30 minutes before you finalize your orders? You are going to be in an alliance with someone, you also have to declare it.

You go back to PD and die. No one invited you here. I've just learned about all of this thanks to your thread and I liked this site better anyway but now after learning the truth about PD and reading your pathetic whining last post I'll in no way consider returning. Just the fact that you guys from there are here is pathetic. Go find another website to steal from.

@Kestas,

I don't have anything against people who play on playdip in general. If they like playing there, that's fine with me.

What I do have a problem with is people like superman who come on here to use a feature that webdip offers and playdip doesn't and still give webdip a hard time. It's incredibly rude and uncalled for.

From reading their respective thread, it's clear that players here and players there are on completely different pages. I know very little about playdiplomacy, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised by the ignorance about webdiplomacy shown in their threads. This isn't really a competition, and I think it's just great that Diplomacy as a game is exposed to a wider audience in general.

To each their own.

Advance warning of bitterness and resentment.

"Playdip was UNKNOWINGLY plagurized [sic] by the programmer...his programmer did it. The owner (goes by Avalanche) did NOT know of this issue until you brought it up to him. (which was the right decision; but don't go blaming somebody that had actually nothing to do with it)"

Firstly, if that is the case, why didn't he pounce on the opportunity to employ Kestas who was able to save him in excess of €1000 per year? Secondly, why did he take down the License when Kestas publicly attacked the lying programmer? Thirdly, why is the new programmer apparently as incompetent as the previous in keeping the website optimised? Fourthly, is the claim to costs in the tens of thousands truly believable? Fifthly, isn't shitty programming exactly the hallmark of a specialist in another area (SEO?) patching up a plagiarised bit of code? Sixthly, is it not the case that other people, not affiliated to this site, take a similar view to mine, "...stiutations [sic] like 2005-2009 where someone can throw money at the hobby without a valid business model to build a large site then threaten to abandon it if they don't pay off his failed investment"? Seventhly, is it really believable that an SEO dedicated to the tune of thousands to allowing people to play diplomacy wouldn't want to help the man who has developed the standout piece of diplomacy programming of the 21st Century by employing him? Eightly, is it believable that such an altruist would stubbornly refuse to use the code of 0.8 to improve his site, which is better? What if he is a con-man who wants to profit from it and not share development with Kestas? Ninthly, why is the old done-in-paint-map still being used by this man?

Tenthly, why should we "Let this die" just because you want to? Why should you be granted last say? Why indeed, should we care what you want us to do when you have been downright rude not only to the community at large, but also, which I consider more hateful and vicious, to Kestas, the man you should be thanking for making both sites possible? Perhaps rather than typing angrily in block capitals to this man, you could show a little respect? Perhaps you should acknowledge either your previous ignorance or lack of insight into kestas' position?

I might be reading too much into it, but I suspect you want this thread to die because you are too proud to admit that you didn't realise just what wrong Kestas suffered in this, but too timid to carry on brazenly? I don't know, but I do know that at present your disrespect breeds only disrespect for you.

@Kestas, i knew someone would correct me where i was wrong. Thanks.

@ Superman, glad you took the opportunity to defend PD in this 'plagurism' issue.

I admit the PD owner (Avalanche) must feel hard done by if he paid for someone to create a web diplomacy and they just stole the code from here.

Good luck with your site, i haven't been convinced it has been better, though you did a good job defending Avalanche against hte plagurism charge, you have done much worse convincing me about the website.

lastly.

I like the blocky look of the playdip map.
it has style, i'd like to have options on webdip for using whatever map a player chooses.

for example this one: http://www.crockford.com/wrrrld/map.gif
or a nince geographic one: http://cartophilia.com/blog/uploaded_images/diplomacy2-738955.jpg (though i think that one is copy righted to hasbro)

maybe i'll add that, i shouldn't be too hard.

There comes a time to let by-gones be by-gones. We're talking about ancient history here. Both sites exist, with playdiplomacy having acknowledged kestas for sometime now. What more do people want playdiplomacy to do? Shutdown?
Let the players choose where they want to play and leave it at that.
However discussing the merits of each site, in a thread here, or on playdiplomacy is fine with me. I think it is interesting. And if I was a totally new player I would like to be able to read a comparison.
Some players like point and click others prefer drop down boxes. Some like the map here, while some people actually like playdiplomacy's map. I prefer webdip, and that's my choice.
Kris2476 (232 D)

Just my two cents.

I like this place better. think the chat bar is easier to use, the map is prettier, and I can play in more games. I don't play diplomacy for variants, nor do I care about forums all that much.

However, there are quite a few n00b players on this site. I can't tell you how many silly opponents I've had who simply refuse to negotiate, or even respond to my Spring 01 post.

This gets my vote, anyways.

@orathiaic, I like that crazy geometric map, the first one you linked. It's so abstract. It would be interesting to see if people play differently when countries are all roughly the same size. People tend to freak out when Russia captures 2 or 3 supply centres because it's so huge on the map. I wonder if they'd react differently. And as for the second map, I have an old Diplomacy set with that very same board. It's awesome cause it's so old. Only problem is my France pieces (which are supposed to be light blue) are painted an only slightly lighter green than the Italian pieces for some reason. It gets very confusing.

wow, lots of thread to read through here.

20mins later and I've caught up. Most of my points have been made for me, so I'll keep quiet until the morning, other than supporting webDiplomacy along with others. I'm not a fan of playDip mainly due to the piracy issues (you claim Avalanche didn't know it was stolen? Rubbish - the similarities are blatent), but also because they rewrote the wikipedia article on internet diplomacy to badmouth this place and promote themselves.

Oh, and Ghost - you'll always be a young-un to me :P
Stukus (2126 D)

@orathaic, that abstract map rocks. I love it. Mostly I'm posting just to bump this up, though. Superman hates his own threads here, huh? You'd think he'd stop making them after they all go off his rails.

"Some players like point and click others prefer drop down boxes. Some like the map here, while some people actually like playdiplomacy's map."

- I would also like to say i prefer drag and drop, though i haven't tried it, i think it would feel better than point and click. Also a possible variant of drop down menus would be type in territory name (and suggestions for which territory you mean...) but the system here is pretty good.

He claims he's getting a new server because his playerbase is so massive. Lol.

@ superman:

Get the hell off our site. You ask us to let this thread die because we completely and totally beat you, and you have quite literally no argument available to make.

If you like playdiplomacy, that's fine. Go there, and stop posting intentionally provocative, retarded, uninformed statements in our forums.

And I don't remember what (if anything) hellalt said to you, but I'm sure it was awesome, and I'm sure he was right.

hellalt +1, the same as everyone else in this thread who's posted trashing this troll.

Obama's Coast Guard HALTS Oil Spill Clean-up Effort

I don't even know what to think. It appears Obama - by allowing his coast Guard (He is commander in Chief) to halt an effective clean-up effort - wants (or at least is allowing) the destruction to be worse. Thoughts?

I'm studying to be a classics major and was wondering if anyone else on the boards has studied/ is studying Latin or Greek. Personally, I intend the first major works that I read in either language to be the epic poems (working on the Iliad right now!). What about you? (and if there are any veteran classicists stalking these forums, do you have any resources to recommend or advice to offer? Thanks!)

I am sure this has been brought up before, but there really needs to be a harsher penalty for people who go into civil disorder. It completely ruins the game. If if the penalty was 2x or 3x the bet maybe people wouldn't leave the game the moment things go against them.

Ancient Med is a bad map.
I recommend avoiding this board for diplomacy because it is particularly ill suited to regular diplomacy albeit alright for gunboat. The problem is that due to having only 5 players, a first turn full trust alliance can brute force the game regardless of what the other players do and that is sort of a problem.
