Introducing Family Members to Diplomacy

[Update] Help me build a cheap PC for my media centre

So, I finally made a decision and purchased a slightly used Intel NUC. It has a 1.8 GHz i3 processor, 128GB SSD and 3GB RAM. It's a cute little box that hides nicely in the living room. I just watched an HD movie (Sicario) and the computer had no issue transcoding it. The fan wasn't audible over the speakers and I'm thinking it's a pretty good solution for anyone going that route.

@Valis, does that mean metagaming is allowed? I guess I don't exactly mean metagaming in the way the webDip rules define it, but...

What I'm understanding is that the tournament games are unranked because tournament players might choose to draw rather than fight for a solo based on their current rank on the leaderboard, the ranks of their opponents in their current game, and the positions of other players on the leaderboard in THEIR current games.

That kind of play seems to conflict with WTA-style games because there could be incentives to draw, but then, there IS a metagame in a tournament, which is, managing multiple games strategically in order to win the tournament.

Still, the fact that the games are unranked suggests you could metagame in a much more malicious way, like playing crappy strategies to deliberately undermine targeted players to manipulate the overall ranking.

I don't know what "the meta" around tournaments is, both in terms of what is considered acceptable and what is not, so any clarification would be appreciated.

bob: I can't speak to the rest of your question, but the games are unranked because the Carnage scoring system rewards different play than DSS does. We didn't want people to be throwing their tournament position to defend their GR or anything. It's best to keep only one scoring incentive going on in a game at the time.

Maybe if this tournament is a success, we could add carnage to the site. I think there are other priorities first, though.

There is absolutely no meta gaming allowed. I hope no one here thinks they're unranked because I somehow think its okay to cheat. I was asked to make them unranked for the reasons listed by ATC

To talk to some of your other concerns, it is always in your best interest to get a higher score, so dragging your game down doesn't make any sense.

Players are expected to play to maximize their score, although that doesn't mean they have to solo regardless of context. One might find themselves in a position it is the better play to draw as top of the board, rather than go for a slim chance at a solo and risk being beaten down to a lower rank. However I remind everyone yet again but a single solo will beat any combination of non solos, even three top boards.

Everyone plays for different reason.

It is culturally acceptable to take into consideration standing in the tournament. You may argue to other players that another player must be attacked because they are currently leading the tournament, but there also free to realize that if they go along with you suddenly you are the leader who needs to be eliminated.

As a bit of an aside, I will mention that this is still very overcomable as someone who went into the 2015 face to face web dip tournament in the lead and still came out in the lead by the finish.

You cannot argue or attack someone because they stab you last round or you agree to work together next round for example. If you do not understand or are concerned about the fact that these are not objectively physical measurements feel free to contact me or the moderator team.
