Real life mute function
Wouldn't it be great if there was a mute function in REAL LIFE?

Like, if I could choose not to hear any "news" story or generally any mention whatsoever of Miley Cyrus. That would be great.

What is with all the porn stuff recently .......I don't think there is a shortage of free sites to cater for all needs and deviations, why is it popular on here all of a sudden?
Apart from proving your smart enough to post a URL or a web address why all the porn? (Robin Thicke video is not porn btw)

orathaic (1009 D(B))

There has been more conversation about 'what to do about porn' than there has been porn actually posted. A huge victory for trolls and loss for red tape.

Unless you think lots of talk and little action is a virtue of democracy... (which would be odd, give that webdip is not a democracy)
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

Here is an idea, if people want a porn thread they should have to opt in to it and if they don't opt in they would not be able to see it, we could do this also with other upsetting and disturbing topics such as daily bible readings, make it an opt-in thread to stop upsetting the normal people but still pacifying the perverts and weirdos, whatdoyouthink?
Maniac (189 D(B))

@jmo - I think you should reconsider this statement "If you don't like content you're more then welcome to stalk someone and harass them every time they post offensive content." You make a valid point earlier in your post that death threats could end up with the perpetrator being arrested, but then you undermine your point by condoning stalking and harassment which are criminal activities in many jurasdictions including USA, UK and Australia.

I don't think you mod status should give you powers over what laws we should obey and which we should float. Also I'm concerned that if anything were to happen with a serious stalking incident that you (and the site) may become culpable for condoning and even encouraging stalking.

orathaic (1009 D(B))
07 Nov 13 UTC
Maniac, i think it is clear JMO means following people on the forum, and posting messages to them, which i doubt is covered by stalking laws in the UK, US or Aus... Not actual stalking in real life.

Please jmo never self-reflect or apologize or recount any statement you make, any sign of weakness on your part will embolden your enemies.

Pres JMO, how does that sound :-)

@Orathaic

UK CPS guidance on what cyber stalking is...

Harassment can take place on the internet and through the misuse of email. This is sometimes known as 'cyberstalking'. This can include the use of social networking sites, chat rooms and other forums facilitated by technology. The internet can be used for a range of purposes relating to harassment, for example:

to locate personal information about a victim;
to communicate with the victim;
as a means of surveillance of the victim;
identity theft such as subscribing the victim to services, purchasing goods and services in their name;
damaging the reputation of the victim;
electronic sabotage such as spamming and sending viruses; or
tricking other internet users into harassing or threatening a victim.

Above are criminal offences in the UK. Many people think that laws don't apply to the internet, but they do.

Maniac almost none of those apply to any behaviour exhibited on webdip thus far.

To be guilty of this I would have to begin a campaign of stalking. For example I would start finding Draugnars personal details like address, making posts accusing him of heinous things on social networking, send him disturbing threatening emails

Simply calling him a faggot on a few threads wouldn't cut it.
Maniac (189 D(B))

@Synapse - I never said anyone had committed any offence. My point is that stalking and/or harassment over the internet can be criminal offences. I merely invited jmo to reflect on that. I thought his post condoned and some would say encouraged criminal activity.

@Krellin, stop stirring shit up, Draugnar and I have been talking calmly, so I really doubt he'd go off on theminsterofwar for this:

"Despite several people having big mouths on the forum, NOBODY has put their money where their mouth is and appealed to the mods by mail."

Pretty sure everyone and their brother knows Draugnar appealed since half of the appeal process ended up on the forum. TheMinisterOfWar is right, despite multiple people questioning the decision to silence Draugnar no one did the only thing that would get the case reviewed, appeal to the mod email/kestas on Draugnar's behalf.

@Maniac, this is where some of rule 9's common sense would apply. Do you think it's more likely that I was saying harassing someone for being an idiot on the site is okay, or do you think I was suggesting that you find that person in real life and then illegally stalk them off the site?

If you can't answer that then go back and actually read my post this time, taking note of where it says that no member should have to worry about another member taking real life action against them, and that such threats will be dealt with by the mod team.

On the off chance you're still confused let me alter that statement to:

"If you don't like content you're more then welcome to stalk someone and harass them *ON THE SITE* every time they post offensive content. "
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

Just admit you got it wrong, to err is human .... we don't need to ask Kestas the answer to something that is staring us in the face
Maniac (189 D(B))
07 Nov 13 UTC
@jmo - I merely suggested you reconsider your statement. You have done, but you fail in my opinion to address the problem. You seem to think that stalking on the site could never be a criminal offence. I beg differ, but it matters not what you or I think. What matters is what a prosecuting authority thinks. If someone is stalked on here after you have given them permission to do so, you and maybe the site become culpable for the consequences. If a member tries to damage the reputation of another member consistently and to the point that the victim feels stalked/ harassed there could be prima facia evidence of a crime. A crime you would have encouraged, IMHO. The fact you were offer the opportunity to retract your initial comments and chose not to would also be relevant.

As I said before, I think you undermine your own case. If you took the position that any crime: threats; stalking; incitement; liable; obscene publications etc are prohibited, I could understand that line. But you seem to take a hard line on people providing links to a topless dancer, yet don't care and even encourage cyberstalking. I'm not sure if the webdip community and/or Kestas would share your arbitrary drawn lines.

@Nigee, not sure what you mean, you are allowed to harass other members for stupid posts. See what Krellin and mapleleaf have been doing lately. That is pretty much the key to self moderation.

I don't know what they have been doing sorry...... I was referring to the 48 hour ban for Draug for posting the Robin Thicke video, I found that rather pleasant but then it is a matter of taste, I liked it.

@maniac, I'm not concerned about litigation in the slightest. Neither as far as I'm aware is Kestas. Thanks for your concern though. I'd also again ask you to actually read the post you're quoting and think before you take parts out of context.

@Nigee, if you want a review on that case then email Kestas. Refusing to use the appeal options on the site will get you nothing.

I don't want or need a review, I don't want to waste any more time than has already been spent on the subject but I think you were wrong and I have a reasonably fair objective sense of fair play, you over-stepped the mark, you allowed him to intimidate you and you over-reacted, I'm ok with that, you don't need to be perfect, it's unrealistic. I don't need you to agree with me, everyone knows the score here :-)

@JMO - I was not "stirring shit up" I was posting on behalf of Draugnar, which Draugnar asked me to do.

Is that now a silenceable offense too????

Your assertion that the precious mod team is above reproach in incapable of wrong-doing is kind of laughable...

Krellin, going around a silence is a silenceable offense, though since his is more self imposed I don't think it warrants a warning, I'll talk with the other mods and see before I make that official though.

Nigee, please don't post if you don't know what you're talking about. The first decision to silence was made by 4 mods, I don't know how much clearer I can make it, no decision is make by a single mod. The appeal was handled by 2 mods, there was a miscommunication in the appeal which I worked with Kestas to correct. The actual silence was justified. There were issues with the appeal that I already mentioned and apologized on behalf of the team for, which is why we changed the way silences will be handled going forward. So despite saying you don't want to waste time, that's all you're doing.
@Nigee: the irony is just too much.
