Jamiet, I am not normally afraid of people in this way. But my boss has severe issues with anger hence the quitting. He really is passive aggressive and the kind of person who shoots up the office with an assault rifle.

If the two opposing poles are "I want to quit" vs "I'm afraid", the only possible two options are to not quit, or to face your fear.

So I guess I'm with Jamiet here.

See suggestion (1.) in my earlier response. Write a letter of resignation, explaining your reasons for leaving, leave the letter on your boss's desk when he's not there, and get the hell out of there.

You could also write a (polite) letter and go politely hand it to your boss, saying something like, "I'm sorry, but I've decided it's time to move on. Here is my letter of resignation. Thank you." Then you're free. If he starts yelling, turn and walk away. If he pursues you and physically assaults you, know that you will own him and probably the company after your lawyers have done their job. (This assumes, of course, that you don't need his recommendation for another job -- but it sounds like you might not want it anyway).

If you're afraid he is going to shoot the place up with an assault rifle, by all means do this very soon.

Demand a substantial increase in your payment and say that if you dont get it you will quit.

(Warning a possible outcome of this can be getting brushed off, and then keep working in a hostile environment)

In these situations you always have to be more aggressive. I recommend something like..."Hey you lazy piece of shit I've written out my resignation letter on the end of my cock in a braille you can only read with your tonsils." His open mouth stare may mean he's interested.

My guess is he'll either accept your resignation or fire you. Win/Win.

Fake your own death and have a family member who's on the in send a copy of your death notice in.

I think part of it depends on a few things. First, if you were not able to find or keep employment elsewhere, would you want to come back to this company? Is there another job at this company that you would like in which case you'd be looking for a lateral transfer with hopefully a different supervisor/manager? Do you hope for a letter of recommendation or at least a decent phone reference?

I'm with Semck. Go classy. How you leave is even more important than how you perform while you're there. Just write up a letter, something along the lines of,

"Dear Mr. Raging Assole, (but use his real name, not that nickname)
I wanted to let you know I've decided to pursue other professional opportunities. My last day will be __________. If there is anything I can do in the meantime to ease the transition, please let me know. This was a difficult decision for me, and I appreciate the opportunities this position has afforded me to learn and thrive."
