Congrats jmeyersd on a well-deserved victory!
My first game in quite a long time, and I was given command of France. My initial plans were to try and eliminate England as quickly as possible, and so I sent messages to Russia and Germany under that pretext. Germany and I had some early successes, with a French fleet in the channel and a German one in the North Sea, England looked on the ropes already, especially with Russia opposing him in Scandinavia. However, a German army built in Munich stirred up my paranoia, and some good diplomacy from England convinced me to switch sides.
As I feared, German armies attempted to move into Burgundy and Belgium, but were fortunately bounced by my own units. Meanwhile the DMZ in Piedmont was broken by and Italian army and I started to believe there was a German-Italian alliance headed my way.
However, thankfully this never came to fruition. The Italian diplomat apologised profusely for the DMZ violation and offered to withdraw his unit (likely because of the well placed French army in Gascony capable of defending Marseilles.) Germany on the other side of the coin accepted my offer of re-establishing the peace between us so that he could divert units east. In all honesty, I didn’t expect him to believe that offer, but it served to get me into Burgundy.
However, already Russia was looking dangerous. With Turkey and Austria unlikely to work together and Germany’s armies tied up against me, something had to be done, and so again I offered Germany a cease-fire (this time, genuine) so that he could fight the Russian units which looked to threaten his home centres. Germany was understandably sceptical but was eventually convinced to move east.
Now I found myself in a strange position where I had no enemies at my borders. I played around with the idea of attacking Italy, and nearly did so. Perhaps it was around this point that I should have stabbed England, which would have given me more centres to stand up to Russia with in the later game. However, I had come to value the alliance and decided against the stab. Instead, I returned to the old enemy in Germany and tried (but failed) to take Munich. By now the German was becoming very frustrated at my continued offers of peace and subsequent stabs, quite rightly so (sorry Germany!)
While these petty squabbles continued in the west, an apparent Juggernaut had grown in the east. It was 1904 and Italy sent out the message to England, Germany, and myself, about a coalition to combat the eastern threat. The alliance actually served me quite well, at least in the early years - I took Munich (all part of Italy’s plan) with no repercussions, and French fleets siled unopposed into Italian Seas. I was well positioned now if I chose to turncoat again to side with the eastern pair.
In fact, this is not far from what I tried to do. I spoke to Turkey about helping him invade the green country and gave him information about Italy’s moves which helped him take Venice. The infamous ‘screenshot-gate’ occurred. I’m not going into that - it’s been discussed elsewhere - but this was enough for me to withdraw my support to Turkey and help Italian forces back into Venice. I also stabbed poor old Germany yet again.
Talks of a E/F/R draw began to emerge at this point and so we spent the following turns fighting the smaller nations in Italy, Germany and Turkey. However, Russia had other plans. His stab in 1907 rekindled the coalition and the rest of the game was spent trying to stop Russia’s push for the solo, although we tried in vain and jmeyersd’s inevitable victory came in 1911.
An enjoyable game, despite everything. Thanks to you all.

PE, you need to get your priorities straight.

Satisfying the egotistical need of a faceless internet persona by refocusing attention on their victory in a board game based upon moving fictitious armies across a map of Europe from 1900 in order to fulfill subconscious power fantasies > education
I hardly count defending WWII - Vietnam era American foreign policy as educational.

What's wrong with American foreign policy in that period?
(1) epic failing in Vietnam
(2) pissing off Iran forever
(3) installing Hussein
(4) starting to empower bin Ladin (Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was underway, I think, by '75?)
(5) creating Israel, because hey we hadn't pissed off the Arabs enough

Alright. So no EoG yet. My EoG is basically a rant against Turkey, France and Germany for not stopping the solo. It is equally enthusiastic about the way England and Russia played, but that's not going to help me get away with that. It'll take another hour to fix that. I still hate F/T/G for not going all the way in stopping the solo though. As for F/G, I saw a big eastern blob coming our way by 1904. Y u no stop blob? That will be at the heart of the discussion. GAME SUMMARY

Classic, WTA, full-press, anon, 101 D, PW protected

RUSSIA (WIN 1911, 18 SCs, jmeyersd): Squid opening
France (Survive, 8 SCs, Glorious93): Manche opening
England (Survive, 5 SCs, Nerevatus): Yorkshire opening
Italy (Survive, 3 SCs, redhouse1938, game initiator): Blue Water Lepanto (Classic)
Turkey (Survive, 0 SCs, President Eden): Balkan concentration
Germany (Defeated, 1909, LakersFan): Anschluss opening (Burgundy)
Austria (Defeated, 1904, DILK): Blue Water Lepanto (Trieste variant)

Having started a game with high quality players, I was a little disappointed to draw Italy, the country that statistically has the worst chances. To protect myself, I started a Blue Water Lepanto alliance with Austria, regardless of what other powers wanted from me. The alliance with Austria gave me a sense of security, although we all sort of lost real contact with Austria after the first serious signs of trouble for him that eventually led to the break up.
I clashed personally and I’d even say culturally with Turkey several times and they allowed the Turkish-Italian war following the Lepanto set up to be quite bitter. Although I expressed my understanding for Turkey’s going to war with me and having profusely apologized for my behaviour several times, I asked him to slow down his advance on my terrain to protect himself against a Russian stab, that occurred like I predicted at the peak of the game.
Failing to assemble an alliance that was absolutely determined to stop a Russian solo, with all countries failing to sufficiently contribute, including myself, but with the notable exception of England, Russia eventually won the game.
The game gained some attention due to the exchange of URLs on which screenshots were uploaded revealing alliance structures that undermined the apparent alliance structures.

INTRODUCTION

A lot has already been said about this game, directly and indirectly, and I will try to take you through what happened during this game the best I can. There are several matters to attend to prior to a chronological description of the game.
jmeyersd, playing Russia, played an incredibly strong game. His diplomacy, strategy and tactics were all of the highest level. At one point, at Turkey’s request, he sent him a screenshot (1) of a conversation he had with France. This is apparently allowed by the site rules.
The pictures reveal that the image was taken immediately after the situation in Autumn 1907 and contain an invitation from France to Russia to stab the powers that at that point are helping France stop the Russian solo so France and Russia can split the game. They were forwarded after Spring 1908 by Turkey to Global to explain the stab that Turkey dealt to “the Coalition (F/E/G/I)”.
The painful truth is that given France’s writing style, ambitions during the game, earlier relationships with Russia and jmeyersd’s personality structure, sufficiently shrewd to send a screenshot, while not being the type of person to falsify one to get what he want, everybody who studied the screenshot was immediately convinced. France didn’t even bother to deny it, it would have tarnished his credibility further.
In this phase of the game I had already received a screenshot from Turkey about an earlier situation, that I determined was also genuine, that revealed that France had supplied moves I made to Turkey while being allied with me and was announcing a stab the next turn.
My response to this particular picture was to send that link to France and offer him forgiveness if he would betray Turkey and punish him for employing this method. France then indeed pursued his alliance with me and punished Turkey accordingly.
Back to the two screenshots from the beginning, sent in 1908. One can ask himself, if I was so convinced that France’s communication to Russia was genuine, why did I not follow Turkey’s example and attack France, or help Russia solo, in revenge, being one of the future targets? Simple; I believed that we had already arrived at a point where obtaining a draw was such a delicate procedure and the draw would probably involve a 16/17 center Russia, that I was convinced that in case Russia didn’t solo, it would be obvious that all other powers would be crucially necessary to maintain the stalemate line. In other words, although I believe France’s intentions at this point were genuine and as applicable to me as to Turkey, they were unrealistic and could be safely discarded, this turned out to be true.
My criticism at this point – having learned from the discussion that treated the exchange of screenshots during a diplomacy game in a general sense – is that Turkey allowed himself to be convinced of, and motivated by, the truthfulness of the message /because/ a screenshot was made, which he himself admitted to have requested from Russia. I withdraw my earlier statements that implicitly accused Russia of cheating.
A closing note in this introduction is about the game itself; I was the one to start it up, with the objective of finding out what it was like to play with some players who were really high-ranking.

CHRONOLOGICAL ACCOUNT OF THE GAME

Spring 1901, Diplomatic War
I drew Italy. Just my luck, I open a game with some of the site’s strongest players and I get the country that is statistically most likely to lose. While contemplating my strategy, what is probably best described as a hormone bomb exploded in the Global press (2):
Yeah, that was PE. His first act during our game was to put some messages in Global that identified him immediately as President Eden. The language, the lifestyle, it all matched. To my frustration, I had not received a personal message from Turkey, despite the fact that he was continuing a conversation on Global.
I was annoyed by not having received a relevant message in private while he did have time for chit-chat in Global. The particular reason for this concern was the 24h phases. I believe a player should use his/her time efficiently when playing such a short-phased game and profit from the fact that he discovers he is online when the game starts.
I decided to send an elaborate message (3) in response to Austria’s opening message provoking a Lepanto attack. After a long and detailed discussion on exactly which course of action would be pursued, focusing particularly on which moves would regulate a secure Austrian/Italian boarder, I decided to ready my moves. I immediately admit this was my first diplomatic error. The negotiations with Austria had been exhausting and I was so happy that they were finished succesfully that I wanted to show the board I was ready to move on.
I had sent a message to Turkey putting the ball in his court. Something about being open to discuss with him. At this point, I’d readied my moves and Turkey sent me a message that this was not a good way to start the game. True, I admitted that immediately. But I didn’t like his way of starting the game either, I told him. He had effectively identified himself in an anon game and had ignored me.
Turkey took the moral high ground and never left the spot. In private, to his credit, he would admit that that was not his usual playing style and never quite realized how to get down to earth again with the rest of us mortals.
I was so honest to tell him that I had effectively made up my mind and that I was not going to ally with him in the early stage of the game. By doing that, I hoped to pave the way for future relationship upon the break-up (it always happens) of the early game alliance I’d just formed.
PE allied with Russia to form a Juggernaut, and France and Germany conspired against England.

Autumn 1901, The Alliances solidify
The Lepanto, Juggernaut and Sealion alliances solidify. The fact that all three of England’s neighbors have engaged him by this time will seal his fate for the rest of the game, he will never fully recover from the damage that is being done to him. I speak a lot to England, actually, he is probably the person I spoke with most during the game and he has been my game-long ally.
All of England’s messages are intelligent, equilibrated, long – admittedly – but never too long; they always say exactly what needed to be said and never become boring. I am hoping to construct a diplomatic relationship that can one day culminate in a tactical one. I am concerned about the balance of power in his section of the board and fear the growth of the belligerent nations will negatively affect the overall board dynamics.
In the builds 1901 phase, I place my first misorder. It results in a diplomatic scandal. Austria is afraid of my armies, considering the option (a legitimate concern, although it was an honest misorder) that I’m actually setting up to invade him.
A complicated phase follows where I inform France that the DMZ we agreed on will be broken, because Austria demands I somehow flow off my excess armies. He appreciates the warning and there are some tensions on the French-German boarder in the years that follow, ending with a typical Italian joke in 1903. France appreciates the fact that I discuss my problem – an excess of armies – frankly with him.

1902, Blue Water Lepanto 2.0
Austria and I decide to bet on Turkey assuming the Lepanto structure to have become dysfunctional and in line with his aggressive attitude during the game, that Turkey will move to Aeg rather than Eas to try to secure Gre. We are so confident in his move, that we simply continue the Lepanto with Ion-Eas and it is successful. We decide that now that this phase of the Lepanto is complete, Turkey will probably move an army to Syria to prevent a convoy there, which he does, and which is the reason not only that we don’t go there, but also destroy the Eas fleet altogether upon the loss of an Austrian center; we overstretched and we have the Austrian mainland to worry about.
In the meantime Germany and Russia are obviously converging to some state of war. A sort of correspondence alliance between me and Russia starts to form in which I demand that Russia build F StP SC, provoking war between him and Germany. I find that Russia is making a bit too many friends if I am included in the club. This is a good thing, Russia’s capacity to make friends and allies seems very well-developed; it characterizes his play.

1903, The tide begins to turn
A crucial year in the game, in 1903 I lose contact with Austria. I’m furious; my most important ally just sort of leaves. How dare he!
A very complicated period in the game begins. With Austria fading out and eventually disappearing, I am seeking closer ties with Russia. I ask Russia for a « gesture », while making a specific moves instruction to Austria. I’m assuming at least one of them will not meet my demands and I will ally with whichever one that does.
For this reason, I stay allied to Austria a little longer but in A03 all contact is lost and I decide to engage. If Austria would have remained in touch, I would have been fully dedicated to him, given Russia’s failure to meet my demands.

1904, Turkish stab
After long negotiations, Turkey stabs me in Greece, citing that the deal I proposed to him was too « biased toward me ». Turkey advances through Austria, whom I wanted removed for non-communicativeness, but by myself and not by Turkey. At the same time I’d made a deal with Russia, which is respected. In fact, Russia respects all his agreements with me throughout the game, which is impressive, since he took the solo still.

1905, The A-team
Around this time, but it could be slightly earlier, I send a message titled
« A1 to France, England and Germany »
This would be the first message in a 40 messages-long conversation between me, France, England and Germany about how to organize an alliance that would counter the Juggernaut, who made a 16 SC total. In 1904, Turkey had taken Ion from me, giving it crucial access to my seas, so I needed French naval reinforcements, explaining the maps that follow. The S05 conquest of Munich you see is part of the deal we made between the four of us. The Western Alliance was born.
It is during this period that I start issuing warning after warning to Turkey that his attitude toward me is too hostile and vengeful. I explain to him that I agree that the Lepanto attack was not exactly nice to him and that I was being abbrasive, but that I apologized multiple times and that there was a bit of a culture barrier between us.
I warned him about Serbia and Bulgaria becoming too vulnerable stab sites and that even though I advised him to pursue (!) on the war he had started against me, because that was just the way the board mechanics worked at this point, that he would pursue it more cautiously, leaving several units behind to match Russian strength in the Balkans.
My Diplomacy with Russia consists of trying to get him to stab Turkey; anything to change the dynamics.
redhouse1938 (429 D)

S06, The board heats up
The Alliance suffered dearly. Germany was not very communicative and NMR’ed in S06. As the moves between France, England and Germany were all interlocked, this was a disaster. We did some damage control, but the truth was that two units at the heart of our operation would simply remain stationary that turn, and it gave us a huge disadvantage.

A06, Complete chaos
When reading Turkish responses to my warnings, I thought that between the lines, I was reading a certain disrespect for the charcter redhouse, although it was not much more than an intuition. We all knew very well who was who at this point, this was no longer an anonymous game in the strictest sense of the word and frankly, by 1906 I couldn’t care less. I knew for a fact that Russia was going to stab Turkey, he’d gotten pretty emotional about the whole Lepanto thing. Turkey’s comments immediately after Russia’s stab reveal the same sense of superiority that was killing him from the start (4).
The period before the stab was painful for me. Being redhouse, and playing Italy, Turkey would never take me seriously. I wanted nothing more than for him to acknowledge me as a player who had a vision with where to go with this game just as he was, and that we could talk on more or less equal grounds on how to manage the fact that war between our nations was inevitable.
The turn before this one, Turkey had dispatched its first « imgur file ». One of the problems that our Western Alliance (F/E/G/I) was facing was that France was actually profiting hugely from the Juggernaut’s successes. The mistake that France was making during all of the mid-game was to lose sight of the global dynamics and would not accept the fact that his own steady expansion during the first years of the game were only masking the enormous threat that was coming from the east and that ultimately culminated in a Russian solo. France played a PPSC system in a WTA game, I later checked his profile for it and my intuition was correct, France had played only PPSC games up to this point.
England was extremely aware of this fact; he was scared of France for the same reason I was, that his rather aloof attitude to the Western Alliance to be able to get into some kind of draw with Russia was not helping us or him.
The pain that both England and I felt was that, although we were exactly on the same page analytically, we didn’t manage to convince Germany and France that dedication to the Western Alliance was not an act of grace toward the two of us, but absolutely vital for their own success in the game as well.

1907, Stabbed by France
Unable to restrain himself and to see the larger dynamics of the board, France stabs me again. The deep ties that were forged between Russia and Turkey inspire me, even at this stage, to consider R/T to operate as a single entity.
Note that to reward France for his efforts in the previous years, I give up Tunis. I want to show my gratitude to him for his selfless efforts in the Mediterranean to stop the R(/T) threat, but evidently, my offer is not good enough and I lose Venice by force.

1908, Second imgur incident
In spring 1908, the imgur file that implicates France in trying to forge a deal with Russia about eliminating the other players puts Turkey firmly on Russian side, helping him solo, and France on the anti-R/T side, although even at this point, France’s loyalty to those countries trying to stop the solo does not go far enough. Again, I forgive France for his actions against my country and I inform the western coalition that from this point forward, the first priority after stopping the solo is the integrity of the Italian mainland and, generally, that we are aiming toward a draw in which each nation has his home SCs, and I demand that all participating members agree to this principle, which they do. By 1909 I finally manage to guarantee the security of the entire Italian mainland. My neighbors finally accepted at this point that I was there to stay. To my horror, I fail to submit the correct support hold order for Apu to Ion in 1908 and Turkey takes the Ionian Sea back. I offer a deep apology for this failure, because the board mechanics are severely influenced by losing this crucial terrain.

1909, Turkey joins the Alliance, Germany leaves
In 1909 Germany stabs France. France’s greed throughout the game and the complacency with which he faced R/T are frightening to Germany, who probably, like I did, felt that Russia, although more threatening in terms of size and tactics, was the more reliable partner. The western alliance loses contact with Germany and Germany stabs France. With another German NMR coming up, I plea with France to protect Mun (England can back up my words here, as he was involved in this conversation), assuming it to remain stationary, rather than attack it, making it a vulnerable site for Russia. Obviously, in 1909 Russia annexes Munich, eliminating Germany from the game and making coordination easier, but also eliminating another player that should have been inlcuded in the draw.
On the southern front, I had just written a long, personal message in Global to Turkey (5) that probably triggered him to join the western alliance. He mentioned that he was flipping a coin to determine which side he’d be on, but frankly, the moment I’d put that message online I knew its persuasive power would be sufficient to get Turkey back on board.

1910-1911
During this phase, it’s just pure tactics. I am Turkey’s main contact and protect his lone Tri unit in exchange for far-reaching influence in what that unit does. One thing that went wrong during this final phase is that I gained too much influence in the western alliance. Having set up a system that had effectively delayed Russian or R/T victory for years, I felt – but I’m curious what France and England have to say on this matter – that some of my proposals should have been reviewed more scrutinously. I did not have the time to fully work out the tactics. The idea of my messages was to provide starting points for discussions, not to resolve them.

ANSWERS TO JMEYERSD’S QUESTIONS
1. Da fuck ?
2. The purpose of the destruction of the French fleet was, as far as I remember, inspired by that very analysis. Given the fact that you were weak in the south, and hence were no threat there, we concentrated on the north. Also, I didn’t trust France, and wanted his pressure points in my area placed differently.
3. Ok
4. That was probably my idea, and even if it wasn’t, I’ll happily take credit for it
5. No, there was another moveset that would have consumed your position, involving the following system :

Edi-Nwy [Nth C, Bar S, NwS S]
Eng S Nth h
Kie S Mun h
Bur S Mun h

That was close to one of the attacks I’d prepared, and definitely one I should have picked, given the fact that Tri was guaranteed even without use of Tyo. I glossed over that.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

@England: I believe a R/E two way draw of this game would have done most justice to the fact that you and Russia are – in my opinion – equally strong players and were truly at a different level than all the rest of us. It was an immense pleasure playing with you, as your analyses of what was happening and what to do about it were impeccable. I enjoyed all messages you sent to me, I was rarely thinking so much like another player and very much hope to play you again sometime.
@France: I noticed in your player profile that so far, you’ve only played PPSC games, with this game the only exception. I believe if you play WTA more often, you will find that its dynamics require a different approach, much more about stopping solos or gaining them.
@Germany: we were all very impressed with the way you handled the situation in which you had only one army, that we used to stop the solo. Your S06 NMR prompted me, France and England to agree that you had to be eliminated as soon as we ever got the chance, but by the time you stabbed the alliance in S09, you were a fully integrated member of our alliance again and your stab sealed your fate.
@Austria: I had the feeling that the Russian invasion of your country made you lose hope. Next time, fight till the death, and do not abandon the game and your allies at the first sign of trouble.
@Turkey: A lot has been said already. Your tactics were exquisite, that’s for sure, your strategy and diplomacy weren’t. I made a mistake in the beginning by putting all my cards on an alliance with Austria, but that didn’t justify going on a crusade against me for the rest of the game, although we discussed this in private and you admitted as much.
@Russia : Flawless game. I am truly impressed. Your use of humour, your light-hearted attitude, the ability to forgive little trespasses and start over, the fact that you didn’t really stab me, (although you pulled some tricks, none of them involved breaking an agreement with me) your impeccable tactics and finally the fact that in your playing style you seem to hold a frivolous amicality that at times you can combine with a truly merciless stab to these very friends are what make that you are an absolute top player.

“All better now thanks.

Of course I understand why you’re going for the solo victory – realistically you’re in a good enough position that any other outcome would be inadequate. You’ve played the game well up to this point – good luck from here on in.

If it does fail, I would be more than happy to re-establish the old alliance and go for the three way draw. I have also had my successes in the game, and I don’t feel that a six way draw would reflect that justly. I hope this information can remain between the two of us (*LOL, added by redhouse*) – I am aware you passed on my plans to betray Italy, hopefully this won’t go the same way.

Still, for now I have little choice but to stand with the Grand Coalition. A six way draw is still better than a Russian solo.”

(To: Austria, from you) - Spring, 1901: Hello Austria,

I just received your opening message, while I was writing this message:

I would like to wish you an excellent game! As you may have noted from the Global press (you have to start somewhere when deciding where to go) we have a pretty loud Turkey on board. How about the two of us give him a good scare? ;-)

To this end, I would like to propose a variant to the Blue Water Lepanto, that essentially revolves around the following key moves:

Tri-Adr
Bud-Ser
Nap-Ion
Rom-Apu

Followed by you taking Ion and me taking Tun with Ion, and building a fleet in Nap that forces your Ion fleet into the sea that happens to be left open by Turkey (Aeg/Eas).

Would such an approach interest you?

The Austrian Kaiser

It was a jackrabbit jumping from dot to dot stab that absolutely buried the Juggernaut and ensured E-F domination of the game. He got stabbed by his prospective ally the SAME TURN. Of course the stab worked - it was so stupid I assumed he was better than to do it. Of course your advice turned out to be correct, and I do acknowledge this and give you credit for making the call. Perhaps I'm naive, but I thought Russia was better than that.

(To: Global, from you) - Autumn, 1908: Sultan,
I should know better than to take endless initiatives to see if we can work together again, but so much has changed. I think it's fair to say that despite what happened so far, you can't say I didn't try to reach out to you. Yes, my proposals were biased toward me, that's because - and my friends in the west can vouch for this - my tactical proposals are very much a conversation starter, just like an opening offer can sometimes be ludicrously biased toward the offerer, they lead to good deals when the other party forgives the fact that such an opening offer can be a little insulting and takes the bait.
A lot has happened - I apologized for it then, I apologize for it now - you broke agreements with me, I was being a little bitch to you. Yes, being uncool is worse than lying.
You've got to understand I'm a new player. Everybody was talking about how a Lepanto attack was so cool and exciting (I love these diploarticles online) and being a tactics-lover, I jumped right into it, without considering your situation. That was a mistake. I knew the moves, I just wanted to sort of "feel them". Finally, I had Italy in a serious game. I was a little intimidated with the quality of the field (and the statistical vulnerability of my own nation) so I felt comfortable being in a secure alliance with Austria that gave some direction to my play. You all know who I am, and you all know it's true I haven't yet played a lot.
Let's bury the past and start over.
Destroy the Ionian fleet. I know it's hard for you to be as vulnerable as that and I have a feeling that's due to the circumstances of the game and not the kind of person you really are. Same here. That purple bastard stabbed you when you were most vulnerable, wouldn't it be a beautiful revenge to ram that solitary army into HIS most vulnerable position? I publicly vouch that if anyone plays some kind of game with you afterward and tries to throw you out of the draw, I'll give Russia the game.
I believe you played your role brilliantly, throwing a tantrum when things didn't go your way and showing you could inflate the Russian balloon. Now it's time to take that needle and demonstrate that despite its impressive size, Russia is, in fact, a balloon. Then we draw, and start a new game with everyone here. Except for Austria. What do you say?

Wow. Maybe I will try to write an EoG, given the lack of detail the other people from the game seem to be paying to this Thread (particularly RH, he's been the most fond of brevity it seems).
