My life is totally off-track guys... holy hell. I haven't done anything worthwhile in weeks. I feel like I forgot about all the important things I was supposed to do.

Oh I actually do need some advice:

So the diplomacy club I'm starting at UT... I started a thread about it a while ago.

The first meeting's tomorrow - do you think it's a good idea to let people play other board games... well not *let* them of course I can't stop them, I mean like *promote* other games and even play them.

In some ways I don't want to be a douche about it but I also want this to be a diplomacy club first and foremost. I want all the members to be people who like diplomacy, not someone who just joined to play Settlers of Catan or whatever.

What do you guys think.

Also there is a chance that some of the members of the club will get accounts here, but I'm not sure yet. So be sure to be nice to them lol.

I wouldn't actively promote them, and I'd be clear to establish it firmly as a Diplomacy club first. If the other members want to talk to each other about other games, it's not like you could stop them, but promoting them would diminish the point of a Diplomacy club.

But at the same time I feel like.... it's an uphill battle to sort of... get these people to like diplomacy enough to put in the time. Lol. But this club is part experiment to see if that's possible on my campus. I'll let you know how it goes regardless.

Please do, I'm thinking about trying the same thing here at LSU. (And yeah, I get what ya mean about getting members to put in the time. I have some friends from another high school that started a club, and while it's reasonably active, and the people like it, it'll take a while before they're at, say, webdip's level of ability.)

Eden, you're on the right track. I recently joined a club in Chicago that was started 5 years ago by a small group of old fogies. Now it's got 60 regular members and plays 30-40 games a year, is hosting World DipCon in 2012, and is home to the (as of next week) two NADF champions. But at first it was just a bunch of guys with some spare time and a passion for the game. There's a similar club in New England that hosts CarnageCon and it started off the same way. It'll take a while, but it's worth it - and it might be worthwhile to open it up to people who aren't just students (i.e. transient creatures).

I wouldn't promote it and I'd also promote against it until it looks like you might lose members. Any large campus (such as UT) will already have a general-purpose gaming club. That's where people can go to play Settlers and other games. Diplomacy is a step above those games in many respects and you don't want it to get pushed to the side in favor of easier and more familiar games. Once you've introduced people to Diplomacy and they like it, it's good to play something else for variety, but if you start out with it, I think Diplomacy will quickly lose.

And you shouldn't feel like a douche. If someone showed up to Chess Club and wanted to play checkers, you'd tell them to GTFO. Think of it like that (be nicer, of course).

you're right of course. diplomacy is a cut above but its hard to see that unless you've already put a lot of time into the game

yeah but they're less enthusiastic about dip than i am. they've played and think its a cool game but i dont know if theyre as invested as i am lol

I now have 20 hours of contact time each week, but have found something better to do - a 3 day exped.
I cannot go on the first day since I'm teaching 1st years during that time - completely not on to skip that!
Thus my options are:
-> Go for two days, missing 9hrs contact (although realistically I'd only go to 7 on a normal week).
-> Focus on my education

i would say focus on your education in general figle though i dont know what a contact is.

@Thuc - Contact time is (not surprisingly) time spent in contact with staff, ie supervisions/lectures/classes etc. The key thing about it is if you miss them you can't just move them round, as opposed to your own study time which clearly you control.
