What ARE Ghost Ratings, anyway?
Hey--noobie question. I couldn't find any info on the help page about it. What are Ghost Ratings? How do I get a Ghost Rating? How do I know what my Ghost Rating is? How do I know what anyone else's Ghost Rating is? Many thanks.

Interesting game concept
I was of starting a world war one style game with pre-set alliances and was wondering if anyone was interested. Im thinking it would have to be live though, because I have a convention later this month and dont want to have to pause. Im up for discussion about the allliances though, I just said world war 1 because that would easiest to come up with alliances, but as long as there are two "about equal" teams. im happy. Anyone interested?

@Thucy - my son 14 left a note on his bed. The bed had been made and his room was spotless, it read "Dear Maniac, we haven't been close for a while, you always seem to be playing some dumb internet game, so you probably didn't even realise I've been seeing Mandy <made up name to protect the innocent> from down the road. [I should explain 'Mandy' is late 30s, two kids]. I know you wouldn't approve so we have taken the kids and left - don't try to find us, cus even if you do I'll never come back. I'd sooner go into care. Mandy and I will be fine, we love one another and that's all that matters. One day I hope to be able to get intouch again and show you your grandson. Sorry to break it to you like this.

His note continued "Obviously, none of this is true - my school report is under my pillow, I'm at Dan's. Will be back when things calm down"

I suggest you do something similar with your parents. Tell them you want to sail around the world single handed via somalia and they'll be happy to compromise and let you go to senegal.

Hahaha I've thought about that approach, but in a different way:

I'm trying to think of how to break it to them that I'm socially liberal and not really Christian.

My plan was to come back from Senegal and tell them I'm a communist devil-worshiper.

Then after a year or so of estrangement I'll "come around" and be a socially liberal non-Christian.

But I rejected the idea as very bad. Lol.

@Maniac - guessing the report wasn't perfect then? :(

@Maniac - your kid is a genius.

@Thucy - tell them your gay and think socialism is the better way. Then when they freak do the "just kidding" to liberal non-Christian.

Hmmmmm I don't know. Does anyone have any real life experience of such a strategy working?

Secondary question:

Should I go for a semester or for two semesters?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 Oct 10 UTC
Do you have to decide now?

Also, with Engineering, if you take a semester off, you might as well take a year off. Don't know if it's the same for you.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
29 Oct 10 UTC
I agree, it is largely the same, though my parents seem to prefer a semester.

Funny how ingrained ideas about how Africa is the "wilderness" and "uncivilized" can come to permeate one's everyday life.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
29 Oct 10 UTC
For me taking a year is better than a half because not everything run at the same times.
That is, spring modules tend to have prerequisites done in autumn.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
29 Oct 10 UTC
wilderness and uncivilized, eh? i think it's funny how i assumed senegal was in the south east asia /pacific region... and i'm fairly proud of my geography...

Anyway, of far more concern is the gay/liberal/communist = evil association. So what if Africa is less developed...
Thucydides (864 D(B))
29 Oct 10 UTC
Ah, that's not really the case in the states figle. Or in my major anyway. Interesting though. Yeah, here, all semesters stand alone fairly independently.

Also, the reason their perception that Senegal is dangerous wilderness is because it makes them uncomfortable sending me there. I'm sure they're worried there'll be a coup and I'll be held hostage at the university (even though there has never been a coup in Senegal's history), and if not that, then I'll certainly get a horrible unidentifiable African "jungle" disease and be permanently affected by it, etc.

Whatever. I agree with you who said that a life with no risk is no life.

and A revolution without dancing is not a revolution worth having.
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Oct 10 UTC
The gay/liberal/communist/(you forgot athiest) = evil is because his parents are conservative Christians. We are talking about their association of these things as evil, not a statement that they *are* evil. So by playing into what his parents perceive as a bigger evil, then letting them know it's much less to their minds, they will be more receptive because they'll perceive his "transgression" as a lesser evil over what they perceive could be worse.

So the logic is:

There's really no risk.
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Oct 10 UTC
Zero risk and huge potential gain.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
29 Oct 10 UTC
Zero risk, crossing the road is risky, terrorist attacks are risky, flying exposes you to risky levels of radiation.

But yes, these are all summed to zero...
orathaic (1009 D(B))
29 Oct 10 UTC
pity his parents can't do same way we do :p
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Oct 10 UTC
Actually, no they aren't. They are risk/reward balanced in favor of the reward. But saying something extreme to cushion the blow before backing off to the lesser issue has zero risk because they won't be more angry than if you had told them outright.

A happens.
Tell someone about A and their response will be B.
Tell them C happened then say "kidding, just A happened" and their response may be D (something less than B) or it could still be B. Either way, it won't be worse than B unless you lie and deny anything happened and they still find out A happened. That is the only way E (which is worse than B) is going to occur.

Regarding 1 or 2 semesters, most people who study abroad somewhere very different from their home find the first couple of months to be a difficult transition time. It's the second semester that they really begin to feel comfortable and can get the most enjoyment out of it.

My nephew did a year in New Zealand with trips to Oz as a civil engineer when he was an undergrad and then did much of the research for his Master's in Central America (his Master's was on and his specialty is in water sanitation and reclamation systems).

Thucydides (864 D(B))

hahaha yes that's the idea. otherwise, if it was just a vacation, i'd go to the seychelles or something
figlesquidge (2131 D)
29 Oct 10 UTC
Sorry, thought you were referring to some form of late gap-year.
Well, I'd still go with a whole year. That's how our university does it, and they have a number of exchange schemes set up - mostly with European universities although I believe there are some links across the pond.
If you do less than that you might get done over if courses are taught in different orders.

bowmhower.

lol. but that's just me.

And, since I never said I knew everything baum, I'm going to say that's a trick question, that the two have nothing to do with each other.
