So How Does This "Football" Of Yours WORK, World?
I can't escape this World Cup thing... my Bio professor (like a lot of my good professors I've had) is from another land he's football-mad, every second that's not about Bio is a joke or about how awesome football is, how he used to love playing goalie... but I DON'T GET IT! I mean, most of the games so far have been TIES- why is this so popular? (How does this game even WORK? A clock counting up, all these rules...?) Football lovers- explain? :)

A Game With Teams (Europe Map)
I'm experimenting with a new game where there are three main teams, and the center nations are going to be England (Allies), Russia (Communist), and Germany (Axis). If you want to join a team, you have to ask them in private and declare them on the global chat if they say yes. They also have to confirm it on Global Chat.

Whose forgotten his turn?

No Backstabbing
Anyone interested in a game where you have to declare war on someone before you move into his/her territories (both SCs and Non-SCs) three hours before the turn end and 30 minutes before you finalize your orders? You are going to be in an alliance with someone, you also have to declare it.

I tried playdip but the map pissed me off and i think it's easier to start a game here. The map looks pretty sexy here.

This is the best site hands down. Great map, great mods and a great mix of personalities.

Also, the community here used to rock. Seriously, we used to have threads dedicated to how awesome the community was. But new people flooded WebDip and the community went to crap. The community is just average now, which, on teh interwebs, is piss poor.

There's a reason I've become more and more of a troll - there are very few people on this site I actually respect anymore. If I don't respect you, I'm not going to spend long enough generating a cogent argument, I'm just going to call you a moron and move on with my life.

I'm a board player that went looking for an on-line site too. My first experience was also at play-dip but I din't like it. The map was weak as well as the format. The whole layout left me feeling isolated.

Then I found this one and I like it much better. The format is lively and in my first week I found myself in a tee-for-taa with another player and I LIKED it! I find some people here very funny and even those that I might disagree with about some things they are always decent folk I've found. I can't say the same about PD.

Plus I never saw an obvious attack on that site by players on this site like I've now seen in this thread by 2 supporters of the other site who've never finished a game. To me that's proof that this site is better as the other site feels the need to "Crash" this one to convince people that they're better.

In the famous words of Forrest Gump, "I love you Jenny"

And then, "That's all I have to say about that"

My two bits as a computer noob are, once you get used to it the site runs well. The orders menu helps you quick check your directions and so what if you can get people ticked at you once in a while. That's the game. thumbs up

I think you...are a special person....now now now...come on...I'm being...I'm being serious...for...for a second...are...are you gonna listen to me? Are you gonna listen to me...so I...can tell you that I respect you? (knocks over champagne glass of grape juice)

It's better than actually writing out your freaking orders like in the real game or in email games, though some of them can be fun. (shoutout to diplomaticorp)

playdip: map made by paint.....
I origannly played playdip, but then the timer got to 0, and it took another 4 hrs to go through
I also like how when all orders are in, game goes on in webdip, so a 24 hr game doesnt have to take 2 months to finish
urallLESBlANS (0 DX)

I played on play dip from Dec 08 into Fall 09. It doesn't look any different now, except that it has a point and click interface, which is the only real advantage that I can see.

Compared to this site, I hated the dull community. People did not communicate much. The forum here may be unorganized, but in this case, chaos brings the community together by keeping a bunch of great people in constant awareness of all the conversations. Even the rude ones can be funny, and eventually they get tired of being rude all the time.

The skill of the people on that site was also below the players here, but maybe that has changed. Here at least the point system keeps you playing against your skill level. And the Ghost Rating is a better ranking system.

There were common site problems same as here, but they would last up to a weak sometimes on playdip.

I even preferred World Leaders (now Conquest of Nations) which has had point and click interface and a few good variants (Youngstown, Colonial, and a Greece map) for two years. It also looks better than playdip.

Webdip still has the more skilled players and an amazing community though, and that's what kept me here.
SteevoKun (588 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
I played a bit of World Leaders before I found this site...then I stopped logging into that site after I got tired of playing easy games since it seemed the people I played against there weren't as good as the players here.

playdip used to have a lot of bugs, like I said.

it is now all fixed and we are getting a new map within weeks which is much better than yours.

I am not really trying to be argumenative, but how can they be creating a map "which will be much better" than ours? I think the map we have is great. What problems do you see with the map that this site uses?
Better question, why are playdippers coming over here to pimp their website? I don't see the need, do you feel like you've got something to prove?

I don't think you wanted the webdip users opinion...
You wanted a way to try to get users to playdip.
After all you only pointed good things for playdip and bad things for webdip.

You are not really a rememeber of this community as it is "our" map and "your" map, as you said...

Well I don't know how it is right now, but the playdip map used to suck big time.
The communication was very poor.
And this community has a unique spirit that I really enjoy.
And we have some very good tournaments that make the level of some games go much higher...
Or do you think that the level of play in this site is what you get in live games (the ones that you play?).
Aurens (252 D)
19 Jun 10 UTC
Maybe it's just my browser setup, but the message screen in PlayDip opened in a new tab, so I couldn't communicate while looking at the map. I gave it up after one game.

I tried out playdiplomacy over Christmas. At the time it was experiencing a lot of technical difficulties with the site being out of action for days on end (and more than once during the one game I played) - so my assessment might not be completely fair. I didn't like the point and click moves system either. It was slow and unresponsive. I prefer the drop down boxes myself, but I think Kestas is considering introducing point and click here.
PlayDiplomacy's ranking system is flawed too, as a win against a newbie counts the same as a win against a top player. That said the points system here is not perfect, but I think it is better than playdip's. Playdip does have a fading echoes scoring system whereby you recent wins count more than your old wins - I think this system has merit. Of course webdiplomacy has TGB and his Ghost Rankings, which is awesome. We are very lucky. Plus we have so much tournament play here too (thanks largely to TGM, but other players have organized tournaments too).
It's good that there is more than one diplomacy site. As each evolves it increases the pool of ideas for further development. One site might make a positive change, and if it works other sites can adopt it. Indeed playdiplomacy is itself based on webdiplomacy's code but with some modification. So I am not really into putting other sites down - but fair criticism and discussion is fine by me, whether that means you favour webdiplomacy, playdiploamcy, or another site.
spyman (424 D(G))

superman88 I am not sure though that playdiplomacy is the larger of the two sites. Webdiplomacy ranks higher on Alexa (the last time I looked anyway), plus if look closely webdiplomacy usually has far more members online at anyone time. Playdiplomacy has more accounts, but it does rank higher on Google, which means you probably get a lot of new players who join playdiplomacy because it is the first site they hear about. But it might be that they only play one game and then move on.
As I write there are currently 82 users online at webdiplomacy, while for playdiplomacy there are 23 users online (the all-time record for playdiplomacy is 83 users).
I played a few games at playdip, but overall find the quality of play better here. I have really not encountered any rude players on either site. I do think the mods are more responsive here even thought it is a free site. Admittedly I played playdip when it was in beta. THe thing I absolutely hated was the old confirm your game before the game begins. It took forever to get a game started.
spyman (424 D(G))
19 Jun 10 UTC
I can't how you can ensure that you get to play a game with players at your level on playdiplomacy.
Here the points system means that high points game will attract players who can afford to lose them. So as get better so does the quality of your rivals.
How is this achieved on playdiplomacy?
spyman (424 D(G))

typo... I can't *see how you can ensure that you get to play...

Yeah the confirming thing screwed me over a few times. I just checked it out now and it's pretty nice though. I still like this better though. superman get the hell out of here stop advertising for playdip

Obama's Coast Guard HALTS Oil Spill Clean-up Effort
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/bp-oil-spill-gov-bobby-jindals-wishes-crude/story?id=10946379

I don't even know what to think. It appears Obama - by allowing his coast Guard (He is commander in Chief) to halt an effective clean-up effort - wants (or at least is allowing) the destruction to be worse. Thoughts?

Classics
I'm studying to be a classics major and was wondering if anyone else on the boards has studied/ is studying Latin or Greek. Personally, I intend the first major works that I read in either language to be the epic poems (working on the Iliad right now!). What about you? (and if there are any veteran classicists stalking these forums, do you have any resources to recommend or advice to offer? Thanks!)

Penalty for CDing.
I am sure this has been brought up before, but there really needs to be a harsher penalty for people who go into civil disorder. It completely ruins the game. If if the penalty was 2x or 3x the bet maybe people wouldn't leave the game the moment things go against them.

Ancient Med is a bad map.
I recommend avoiding this board for diplomacy because it is particularly ill suited to regular diplomacy albeit alright for gunboat. The problem is that due to having only 5 players, a first turn full trust alliance can brute force the game regardless of what the other players do and that is sort of a problem.
