newbie question about disbandment
If I have a fleet in a coastal, home territory in the fall, can I disband it then build an army in the same territory?

For example, if I am Austria in Fall 1901 and have a fleet in Trieste at the end of the fall turn, can I disband the fleet, then build an army in Trieste that's ready for use in Spring 1902?

Rename "Unit-placing" "Builds"
Yay or nay?

@positron: unlike economics the game is basically zero-sum(once the neutrals are taken); you are not simply building/producing new units, you have adjusted your supply by taking/losing teritories in the move phases, you are adjusting your units to match your supply.... simple, accurate, traditional.
Toby Bartels (361 D)

Yes, I like ‘Adjustments’ as well.

BTW, it's not always true that there is a disband for every build, even after all neutral SCs have been taken. That only holds if there were no disbands during Retreat phases.
JECE (1248 D)

Draugnar: I gape. This has to be the first time you've actually supported me.
Toby Bartels: Ha ha. Thank-you for reiterating one of my point: "And it is not actually true that for every build there is a disband. Units are often disbanded in both the Spring and the Fall retreats phases." Its good to repeat things on forums, as you have just proven. :-)

@ JECE: Ah, I see that up above now, sorry I missed it before.

@JECE - I'm not unreasonable, just highly opinionated. :-)
rlumley (0 DX)

I don't like Adjustments... It makes me think that a screw is loose or something. Where's a wrench? That's an adjustment. Building a new unit is not an adjustment. ;-)
rlumley (0 DX)

Here's an idea: Why not move the date and phase name to the right side above the next phase ticker. It makes more sense over there, and it would free up some space issues.

Besides, there are three lines on the left side, and two on the right - it only makes sense.
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Nov 09 UTC
@rlumley - a disbandis not a build. Calling it a build phase is a misgnomer.
Acosmist (0 DX)
15 Nov 09 UTC
A disband is a build in antitime.
JECE (1248 D)
15 Nov 09 UTC
rlumley: But builds are adjustments to the military command structure. Your idea to move the game date is interesting, but misses the point. On my screen, I see two lines on the left and on the right. It spills over depending on your screen size, I believe. The problem with the right side, though, is that there is less room on that side. One piece of information, when the next phase begins, takes up the 2 whole lines. If you were to add the game date as well, you would have 4 lines, with all the dates bunched together causing potential confusion.
JECE (1248 D)

And would building -1 units really be disbanding a unit? I think, technically, it would be building a unit out of antimatter. What would be the consequences? I would be like MAD!

Antimatter has opposite spin; do disbands have opposite spin to builds? I think my antitime theory is better.

You have no gender JECE? Interesting, but that's not really relevant... ;-)

Having "adjustments" just sounds bad. Like Rlumley, I do not associate "adjustments" with Diplomacy. sounds alot more like we need to fix a screw or something. I think that it is perfectly fine the way it is right now, if you rally want to change it though go with "builds" not "adjustments".
Geofram (130 D(B))

What screen resolution is required to repeat the results of having the text spill over to two lines?

I'm at 1440x900 and I have no issue, even in the example you gave.
JECE (1248 D)
15 Nov 09 UTC
rlumley: Ha ha, very funny. I (a male, if you must know) would not be like mutually assured destruction because I am not so certain I am made of more than one conscious being. The Diplomacy board, on the other hand, has 7 (hopefully) conscious minds. Now the theory of MAD applies, as every great power would observe that if it forces another player to build an anti-being, well, that's the end of that. I foresee many draws.
Acosmist: I am not sure I understand your post, but I think you understood my point. Disbanding is not the opposite of building, but building an anti-army sure is. Building an army in antitime sounds like you take an army and make via hypnosis forget it is an army. It sounds interesting.
JECE (1248 D)
15 Nov 09 UTC
Ha ha, maybe the answer is here: http://www.antitime.org/. So, if I understand correctly, antitime is the property that governs how not nothing happens all the time? Now I'm getting confused

Just my two cents, but I'm in favor of a "Winter '06" phase inbetween Autumn '06 and Spring '07. Makes a lot of sense to call it winter, and, while inaccurate to leave winter to one year (in this case, '06), from a gameplay point of view, leaving winter to one year says "this is the last thing you do for this year." Also, Autumn is the longest phase of the year under current notation. Both seasons have a Movement and Retreats phase, then Autumn has a build/disband phase. Makes discussion of this interface a lot easier to have Spring and Autumn more similar and a different season for the more different action (namely, building and disbanding).
jman777 (407 D)
15 Nov 09 UTC
I am 100% in favor of creating a Winter phase. Definitely would be the bes plan, IMO.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

Winter does sound nice. Good suggestion, me thinks.

Adjustments is the best in my opinion
alamothe (3367 D(B))

builds is the most logical name :-)
JECE (1248 D)
15 Nov 09 UTC
Here is the problem with the "Winter phase":

Spring four-phase turn
1. Diplomatic phase
2. Order Writing phase
3. Order Resolution phase
4. Retreat and Disbanding phase
Fall five-phase turn
1. Diplomatic phase
2. Order Writing phase
3. Order Resolution phase
4. Retreat and Disbanding phase
5. Gaining and Losing Units phase

So you want Spring to be a turn, Fall to be a turn and Winter to be a phase? That doesn't make sense.

By the way, I quoted from the rulebook there.

Kestasjk, I really think that most people would agree that "the phase: In which occurs a # of unit-placing(/ or &)removing C:\" is the clearest possibility, and will insist that you implement it.

On a physics note, as Acosmist pointed, calling anti-matter negative matter is just wrong.

Anyway, adjustments is good, builds is fine. I don't think anyone here will object to kestas making his life easier in any way.

NMR in Unit-Placing when you must Disband.
How does the game determine which unit will be destroyed? Is there any way to know this ahead of time?

I'm running a scenario through Realpolitik and getting some very weird results.

Disband Issue (Bug?) for Mods
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=15040 For some reason it won't let me 'save' the disband of my army in Bulgaria as it has no place to retreat to. The UI appears slightly screwed up as you can see from this image: http://img36.imageshack.us/i/diploerror.jpg/ - While it appears that the unit will auto disband when the 'timer' countsdown this issue does mean that progress can be delayed...

Coloured numbers
What happened to the coloured numbers in the game status box?
Until today, if you had more SCs than units, the "units" number would be in green, or if you had fewer SCs than units, it would show in red.
Now they're all just black. What gives?

World Series Diplomacy Tournament.
We need to start thinking about organising our team(s) for this tournament. I think it looks like we're going to have 1 or 2 leagues, so that'll be 2 teams.
I think it would be a good start to decide upon captains, who can give the last word on the team that is put forward. Who would be interested in captaining a team?
