Fleet moves from Ukraine to Poland
In my game, I am Russia and at conflict with Near-East. His fleet got behind my lines when it magically moved to Poland from the Ukraine. This shouldn't occur. A fleet can not move across land. I would appreciate it if this issue was resolved.

Destroying units when no orders received.
If I read the FAQ properly, when no orders are received, units are destroyed based on distance from a home supply center with a tie-breaker being alphabetic order. In a current game I'm playing, Russia had to destroy two units. Livonia, Ukraine and Black Sea were all one move away from a home SC. The units that were destroyed, however, were Black Sea and Ukraine. Based on the tie-breaker, shouldn't that have been Black Sea and Livonia?

" Just that it seems obviously preferable to live a life in which one is fulfilled and happy as opposed to a life in which one feels that something is missing and is miserable."

So it's a preference. Why can't we just say that? It's just a preference. It's not some underlying all-encompassing goal that humans by their very nature, must have.

@Putin

Maybe significant relationships with other beings can constitute an "underlying all-encompassing goal that humans by their very nature must have," and maybe they don't. I would be interested to hear of any sane, mentally sound human beings who have no significant relationships with other beings, and who also claim to be fulfilled and/or happy.

I have to address this first, since it really bugs me...which is saying something for a Putin comment--

"So eloquent for an English major."

...Shakespeare made his share of dick, cunt, fart and shit jokes...as have quite a few pretty well-renowned authors...

If one of the first great works of English lit, "The Canterbury Tales," can include a dude getting farted on, literal ass-kissing, and an ass being burnt, I think it's fair to say the ship's sailed on picking on posterior-based observations, thanks.

So pardon me for referencing Jim Carrey rather than make another literary reference, I'm so terribly sorry that's not an eloquent enough way to critique your self-congratulatory smugness and verbal masturbation as you continue to misconstrue and miss the point.

But, hey, if that makes you happy OR fulfilled...
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

"Not even close. Many male insects die without successfully procreating, many times more than those who manage to succeed. Just to name one set of examples."

Notice I listed procreation as ONE factor of fulfillment, and the most base at that?

It's not "procreate or you're unfilled" (which is good for a lot of our fellow denizens of the Internet.)

"Schopenhauer. I suppose he's a thinker too."

Schopenhauer allowed for fulfillment to occur, as well as happiness, he just has different parameters as to what those mean and how ultimately lasting both are.
If we're equating "meaning" with "purpose", I think belief in an external Creator is necessary if we want to determine any objective purpose. Even then, why should God's intentions in granting us life necessarily dictate what we make of it? Even if there's an objectively true purpose as assigned by God, there can still be a subjective purpose as decided by me. In short, I guess I think if God's real life might have an objective meaning, but we're still never going to know what it is.

From a universal point of view, life is an unlikely blip, a small section of the universe that observes itself an its surroundings. It has no purpose, it just is.

From every persons own point of view, shouldn't we be deciding for ourselves what the purpose is? Every human is different, has different goals, and a different ideal.

@Phil_a_s

"It has no purpose, it just is."

Why is it that people always equate simple existence with meaninglessness? Why cannot "just being" be something meaningful or good?

After all, do any of us know the answer to the question of "why does something exist, rather than nothing?"
phil_a_s (0 DX)
07 Oct 14 UTC
No. There are some very funny reasons it is preposterously hard to prove the method of origin of stuff. We have some pretty good ideas though, if I way so myself. And as for the stuff we actually see regularly, we know how all of that was created, so we're pretty well off on knowledge.

Simple existence is objectively meaningless. How can that be denied? You are a speck on a speck in a speck in the universe. You have consciousness, but that only matters to you, and a bunch of other specks on the same speck, so it doesn't seem that important objectively. I just don't know why you insist on there being objective meaning and good to existence. Isn't shared subjective good and meaning enough?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
07 Oct 14 UTC
Why is a speck somehow meaningless? What do you mean how can that be denied? I deny it. Prove existence itself is meaningless.

There is no difference between the subjective and objective. They are one reality.

No, subjectivity and objectivity are separate. Unless you accept that I will not argue with you. Subjective - applying to an individual perception. Objective - does not change in meaning or value depending on the person.

What objective meaning is there in existence? I myself put forward several subjective meanings, so that is irrelevant.

"Notice I listed procreation as ONE factor of fulfillment, and the most base at that?"

Except you said every organism alive procreates. I was responding to that claim specifically. Or did you forget what you wrote?

Here I'll remind you:

"Last I checked, every organism alive today does procreate, s"

"Schopenhauer allowed for fulfillment to occur, as well as happiness, he just has different parameters as to what those mean and how ultimately lasting both are."

Schopenhauer thought happiness was an illusion. "Everything in life proclaims that earthly happiness is destined to be frustrated or recognized as an illusion." (The World as Will and Representation, 573). So I would like to see chapter and verse of where you're getting your reading of Schopenhauer from.

All subjective experiences exist within the objective sphere. Subjectivity exists, yes, but it exists objectively, just like the far side of the moon does. So it isn't very helpful to think of it that way. Your subjective experience is an objective fact
Thucydides (864 D(B))
08 Oct 14 UTC
To use your terms, nothing applies only to one single person. What you think, your subjective perspective, is objectively meaningful. Another way of seeing it is that you cannot ever grasp the objective reality that is out there - your subjective experience is all you will ever have. So embrace it, because it is all that exists.

"Subjective experience *is* objective reality. All that there is is reality. Nothing else exists. If something exists, it is real, if something is not real, it doesn't exist"

Could the argument therefore be made that meaning (if it exists at all) is potentially different for all of us? For example - if I believe my life has meaning then it does because of my own experience.
Mujus (1495 D(B))

ANimac, it's from Ecclesiastes 1, but it only gives half of the story. This book is basically about the futility of human life and values, written by Solomon, King David's son who was renowned for his wisdom, but the final chapter shows Solomon's conclusions about how to live life. Here's the full Chapter 1 and after that the end of the book, Chapter 12 (but I recommend reading the entire book).

Ecclesiastes 1 New Living Translation (NLT)

1 These are the words of the Teacher,[a] King David’s son, who ruled in Jerusalem.

Everything Is Meaningless

2 “Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!”

3 What do people get for all their hard work under the sun? 4 Generations come and generations go, but the earth never changes. 5 The sun rises and the sun sets, then hurries around to rise again. 6 The wind blows south, and then turns north. Around and around it goes, blowing in circles. 7 Rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full. Then the water returns again to the rivers and flows out again to the sea. 8 Everything is wearisome beyond description. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content.

9 History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. 10 Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. 11 We don’t remember what happened in the past, and in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now.

The Teacher Speaks: The Futility of Wisdom

12 I, the Teacher, was king of Israel, and I lived in Jerusalem. 13 I devoted myself to search for understanding and to explore by wisdom everything being done under heaven. I soon discovered that God has dealt a tragic existence to the human race. 14 I observed everything going on under the sun, and really, it is all meaningless—like chasing the wind.

15 What is wrong cannot be made right.
What is missing cannot be recovered.

16 I said to myself, “Look, I am wiser than any of the kings who ruled in Jerusalem before me. I have greater wisdom and knowledge than any of them.” 17 So I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. But I learned firsthand that pursuing all this is like chasing the wind.

18 The greater my wisdom, the greater my grief.
To increase knowledge only increases sorrow.

Footnotes:
a. 1:1 Hebrew Qoheleth; this term is rendered “the Teacher” throughout this book.

Ecclesiastes 12 New Living Translation (NLT)

12:1 Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, “Life is not pleasant anymore.” 2 Remember him before the light of the sun, moon, and stars is dim to your old eyes, and rain clouds continually darken your sky. 3 Remember him before your legs—the guards of your house—start to tremble; and before your shoulders—the strong men—stoop. Remember him before your teeth—your few remaining servants—stop grinding; and before your eyes—the women looking through the windows—see dimly.

4 Remember him before the door to life’s opportunities is closed and the sound of work fades. Now you rise at the first chirping of the birds, but then all their sounds will grow faint.

5 Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets; before your hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom, and you drag along without energy like a dying grasshopper, and the caperberry no longer inspires sexual desire. Remember him before you near the grave, your everlasting home, when the mourners will weep at your funeral.

6 Yes, remember your Creator now while you are young, before the silver cord of life snaps and the golden bowl is broken. Don’t wait until the water jar is smashed at the spring and the pulley is broken at the well. 7 For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

Concluding Thoughts about the Teacher

8 “Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless.”

9 Keep this in mind: The Teacher was considered wise, and he taught the people everything he knew. He listened carefully to many proverbs, studying and classifying them. 10 The Teacher sought to find just the right words to express truths clearly.[a]

11 The words of the wise are like cattle prods—painful but helpful. Their collected sayings are like a nail-studded stick with which a shepherd[b] drives the sheep.

12 But, my child,[c] let me give you some further advice: Be careful, for writing books is endless, and much study wears you out.

13 That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty. 14 God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad.

Footnotes:
a. 12:10 Or sought to write what was upright and true.
b. 12:11 Or one shepherd.
c. 12:12 Hebrew my son.

Ecclesiastes is a great book that almost didn't make it into the Canon, and it's not hard to understand why, as it seems to disagree with other texts. It illustrates well that the Bible is much more complex than people realize. It is not so much a recitation of "God's Words" as much as it is a collection of many diverse writings that are part if an ongoing exploration and conversation

There is one player taking advantage of two abandoned players, getting every sc left alone to get a solo. I think this kind of games is not consistent with the nature of Diplomacy. Maybe the rules were set like that at the beginning, but if anyone is boring and wants to offer some resistence, I could send you which game it is. I'm not sure if that is legal here because the game is anonymous.

NFL Pick 'em Week 5: The Parade of 2-2 Teams
Well, we missed last week, and (another) TNF blowout, but we're back. :) My oh my, look at all the 2-2 teams. My 49ers, fresh off pulling out a win none but I thought (hoped?) possible face the return of Alex Smith and the Chiefs, both at 2-2. Bears/Panthers? 2-2. Falcons/Giants? 2-2. The Texas teams clash, the Cowboys and Texans both sitting at 3-1. The SNF match-up? The reeling (!) Pats vs. the unbeaten (!) Bengals...Week 5...pick 'em!

So far, McCoy has not had a good game. He hit 13 pts once, has 1 rushing TD, no games reaching 80 yds and earned 2 D last game. Philly is facing a tough niner's D tomorrow and still has a rigid schedule. That said, he is still a prolific back and is a solid target in the short passing game.
