Fleet moves from Ukraine to Poland
In my game, I am Russia and at conflict with Near-East. His fleet got behind my lines when it magically moved to Poland from the Ukraine. This shouldn't occur. A fleet can not move across land. I would appreciate it if this issue was resolved.

Destroying units when no orders received.
If I read the FAQ properly, when no orders are received, units are destroyed based on distance from a home supply center with a tie-breaker being alphabetic order. In a current game I'm playing, Russia had to destroy two units. Livonia, Ukraine and Black Sea were all one move away from a home SC. The units that were destroyed, however, were Black Sea and Ukraine. Based on the tie-breaker, shouldn't that have been Black Sea and Livonia?

Need Help with an unfair game
There is one player taking advantage of two abandoned players, getting every sc left alone to get a solo. I think this kind of games is not consistent with the nature of Diplomacy. Maybe the rules were set like that at the beginning, but if anyone is boring and wants to offer some resistence, I could send you which game it is. I'm not sure if that is legal here because the game is anonymous.

NFL Pick 'em Week 5: The Parade of 2-2 Teams
Well, we missed last week, and (another) TNF blowout, but we're back. :) My oh my, look at all the 2-2 teams. My 49ers, fresh off pulling out a win none but I thought (hoped?) possible face the return of Alex Smith and the Chiefs, both at 2-2. Bears/Panthers? 2-2. Falcons/Giants? 2-2. The Texas teams clash, the Cowboys and Texans both sitting at 3-1. The SNF match-up? The reeling (!) Pats vs. the unbeaten (!) Bengals...Week 5...pick 'em!

No, you don't run out. You distribute it equally. The money isn't getting thrown on a like and burned. Although when a millionaire lets his fortune rot in a vault instead of giving it people, that is a bit like burning money, for all the good it does this world.

And it's true, free and fair elections are a prerequisite for democracy. I was too strong to say it has nothing to do with democracy'. But seriously, Octavious? That's all that matters? What if the important issues never get voted on? What if the choices are all inadequate representatives. What if the population is cowed into voting for people who do not represent their interests? What if voter turnout is so low that the electorate and the actual population are such different groups that old white people pretty control the elections? What if the government enacts laws specifically designed to make it hard for its citizens to vote because the government knows it won't like what the citizens tell it to do?

What if it is empirically studied and found that the government goes against the will of the people and in accordance with the desires of a small group of oligarchs almost all the time? Yet just because no one is literally stuffing ballot boxes, it counts as a democracy? That's a sadly weak view.

If the government is not ruled by the people, it's an illegitimate gang of tyrants.

@Thucy:

One could argue that none of your hypotheticals are actually free and fair elections. If the elections were truly free and fair, does something else need to be done to be a (good) democracy? I don't know.

"Consent of the governed. It's a thing."
"Why does it matter more than the welfare of the governed?"

zultar, do we have Putin's IP address...

I'm not entirely certain this isn't the REAL Vladimir Putin speaking here.

The answer, Putin, is that as free and autonomous beings, consent, you know, tends to be kind of important to us...rather than...you know...a government enforcing its will at the barrel of a gun...

Especially when past governments which have done so have done so while tending to, you know, saying the extermination of groups or peoples were for "the welfare of the governed" or, rather, "for the greater good of the State."
Putin33 (111 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
(+1)
Not really. 'Consent of the governed' is a recent development in human history.

Anti-statists have distorted history to fit their preferred political system. The reality is extermination of groups has been more likely the more the open the political system has become. Civil war usually follows democratization. The much overused German example followed the democratization that occurred from 1919-1933. The Yugoslav civil war followed the democratization which occurred in the early 1990s. The great violence in India and Pakistan during partition occurred after independence. Civil wars have washed over the Middle East after the fall of Mubarak, Gaddafi, Hussein, etc.

To answer the question, I agree with phil_a_s.

If we could have a theory-perfect state, you'd want the equivalent of brilliant philosopher kings and queens running the show, in a Camelot of Brilliance, if you will...

In practice, Churchill's right in saying democracy's the worst form of government except for every other one we've tried. Much as I hate-hate-hate some of the people that get elected, I'd rather weather that storm of stupidity than have a dictator rule for 45 years because he, you know, just *knows* what must or should be done for "the welfare of the governed."

Add to that market regulations and social welfare programs, and you have a rough outline for the best we can do in terms of a government right now...it's not perfect, but, as Churchill said, it's better than previously-tried alternatives.

"Not really. 'Consent of the governed' is a recent development in human history."

And so area ideas like:

1. Everyone getting to vote, no matter their sex, affiliation, creed or color,
2. That power derives from the masses' mandate/consent, and not divine will/military fiat,
3. That whole "life, liberty, and the protection of property/pursuit of happiness" thing...
4. The idea that members in a state should be treated equally before the law regardless of class or bloodlines (even if we cock that up sometimes),

Etc., etc., etc.

Funny how, once the Enlightenment and ideas of rule by consent come along, all those other neat little ideas come along as well...it's almost as if people woke up after a millenia or two and decided that rule by consent > rule by fiat.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
"And it's really difficult to understand this love affair with bourgeois elections when Congress has a 6% approval rating."

Because I'll take discontentment with, you know, the ability to elect leaders and then speak out against choices I don't like rather than being told "You WILL like *insert dictator here, and if you don't, well, here's a nice cell or firing squad for you."

Funny how that works...but then, you're a fan of those, so...I guess you figure in your ideal government, you'd always be on the side directing those firing squads, rather than being shot at by them?

Your beloved democratic governments seem to be doing most of the shooting these days.

"Etc., etc., etc."

You seem to have missed the point. People weren't being hauled into extermination camps for millennia prior to the rise of democratic theory.

"Funny how, once the Enlightenment and ideas of rule by consent come along, all those other neat little ideas come along as well...it's almost as if people woke up after a millenia or two and decided that rule by consent > rule by fiat."

And yet they're killing each other in civil wars instead of abiding by the results of elections. Yay democracy and Enlightenment.

"Your beloved democratic governments seem to be doing most of the shooting these days."

Well, in fairness, we've got a long way to go to catch up to the body count of the Kim Regime...then there's Assad slaughtering people and deploying chemical weapons, your main man Putin jailing gays and invading Ukraine, the fact Stalin is just about the only guy who could out-kill Hitler himself...

But you like those governments, and don't mind the river of blood you're wading through, I guess...so it's all good.

"People weren't being hauled into extermination camps for millennia prior to the rise of democratic theory."

You're right, autocrats and kings just killed people however they liked back then, soooooo much simpler, God, how EVER did we let that golden era slip away?

Your fascist buddies in Ukraine just got caught executing 400 people and pouring them into a mass grave. They also murdered an agent of the Red Cross. They also were condemned for firing on civilians during this current ceasefire.

Seems your buddies have a lot of blood on their hands. Not that you care.

And of course there is democratic Israel, who launches a war every 2 years, targeting hospitals and schools. All of which you defend of course.

And leave it to you to attack Assad and ignore ISIS.

Yeah democracy is working out great. Let's ignore the shitshow that Libya turned into after people followed your advice. Iraqi democracy has been wonderful too. Nobody being slaughtered there, right?

"And yet a dictator who promised not to invade and to de-escalate a civil war is inflaming and invading that nation embroiled in said civil war..."

Rather your democratic corrupt kleptocratic Poroshenko government is murdering thousands of civilians in eastern Ukraine while you cheer him on, blaming everything on Putin when he has abided by the Minsk accord and there has been no invasion, contrary to your claims. Crimea has always been Russian and was not Khruschev;s to give away. It was democratically reunited with Russia. Not that you care because you don't follow the Ukraine situation. You just spout propaganda.

"How has democracy mitigated violence in Palestine? Oh wait you spent a solid month complaining about Palestinians electing Hamas while praising the unelected Abbas."

I respect the Palestinians' right to elect someone democratically...that doesn't mean I have to like who they elect, and can call for them to elect someone else? I know that's a foreign concept to you...

You're what poisons democracy, Putin...which oughta make you happy, I guess...

Radicalism is the death knell of compromise. That's why Congress can't get anything done, and why the Israeli and Palestinian Rights move further and further right, and away from a moderate middle ground where, you know, peace can be approached without rockets and bombs.

But no, radicalization, that's done soooooo much for the Middle East in general, and the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in general.

"'If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—for ever."

But it's a happy picture for you, "1984," because hey, those faces had to be stamped on...for the welfare of the state and the greater good, right? Fascist.

You're seriously defending the shitshow the Middle East has become thanks to the 'democratic opening' and carpet bombing you have advocated. How many millions have to die in Iraq, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Egypt (oh let's ignore Egypt right, they can execute 500 people in one go without you saying boo about it, because they're friends with Israel), before you are ashamed of yourself?
Putin33 (111 D)

ISIS is perfectly democratic. They're the natural outcome of liberal imperialists bombing Iraq and supporting the Syrian rebels.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

If there is radical discontentment by the governed about how their government is caring for their welfare, there are options open to them as free people.

"Vote out the bums" is usually a pretty common and effective way to change your perception of the welfare of the governed.

"Protest in the streets" is another way to get your voice heard via the voting booth isn't loud enough.

However, if there is never consent asked nor given, then there is only one recourse, violent revolution. Unless you count claiming to be a "sovereign citizen" as a legitimate form of governance.
Putin33 (111 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
" respect the Palestinians' right to elect someone democratically...that doesn't mean I have to like who they elect, and can call for them to elect someone else? I know that's a foreign concept to you..."

Right you support democracy except when it's inconvenient for you. Then you advocate carpet bombing schools and hospitals. You know, because you're so anti-violence.
Putin33 (111 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
""Vote out the bums" is usually a pretty common and effective way to change your perception of the welfare of the governed."

Yeah, how is that working out for you? 6% approval rating in Congress and 90% re-election rate.

Your democratic theory looks nice on paper but doesn't work in practice. It's a disaster.
Putin33 (111 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
""Protest in the streets" is another way to get your voice heard via the voting booth isn't loud enough."

Yeah except when people took the streets in 2011 most of the people on here laughed at them and supported police aggression against them. Including Herr Obiwan over here.

So people support protest in theory but once again in practice, you "democrats" always manage to back the police.

So far, McCoy has not had a good game. He hit 13 pts once, has 1 rushing TD, no games reaching 80 yds and earned 2 D last game. Philly is facing a tough niner's D tomorrow and still has a rigid schedule. That said, he is still a prolific back and is a solid target in the short passing game. I have sproles on my team, but did I make a mistake?
