Unless most other Diplomacy maps, Empire4 is not very balanced and a few nations have severe disadvantages that make it very difficult for them to win while others are fairly overpowered. I can explain more if someone wants to ask.

Rival/hatred game variant
I'd like to play a game mode where each player is secretly given a unique rival (so no two players share a rival), and the only players counted at the end of the draw are those who have both survived and eliminated their rival. A solo doesn't need to eliminate their rival and rivals aren't necessarily symmetrical.

Unknown Player in Anonymous Private Game
I'm completely new to Diplomacy and this website. I made a private game and explained to my friends how to join my private match. Though only 2 people say they've joined, I have 3 anonymous players other than myself registered. Is it possible one of them joined twice? I know by the time stamps that it was one of the first two players who joined the game, the times are only a minute apart, and I am wondering if the small time frame is just a player joining twice.

##Captain Rick do you feel councillors should be limited in their right to speak to people? He was a merchant, I haggled with him and we negotiated. He was driving a bargain that clearly was not in our colonial interest. Selling off women like dogs is disgusting. We need to talk him into a better deal that maybe gets us as much silver as we can. The cannon appears to be conditional to us feeding his sexual cravings. Therefore the prop agreeing to something that doesnt exist is pointless.

##Isaac our council would like the cannon after all. How much silver will you give us if we give you the wool on the condition we also get the cannon. I understand you are a businessman but I cannot stomach trading women. I hope you will understand. I do not speak for the council as they dont care for my tactics. But I speak as a human being. This colony has something you want, you do want the wool yes?

Our Leader wants to trade our wool to you for 350 silver and a cannon.
Will this be acceptable?

Lieutenant- Sir do not offend my sensibility, you are new and by no means in a position to demand answers from me. I ask you Councilor brainbomb what is WISE about alienating yourself?

Moon Cat - "I am not sure, however I can locate them on your map" moon cat points to R14 and says if your rowboat continues up river it will encounter the village.

(Bo is the only one capable of translating her language however for transparency any questions asked here will be assumed to be translated and answers will as well; unless bo otherwise refuses. Remember if bo dies you lose ability to communicate with moon cat.)

Isaac- you run a hard bargain but I can very much agree to that.

Captain Rick- I feel the council as a whole is what I serve and you sir are currently at odds with the other 5 councilors. If your council politics doesn't encourage independent action that isn't for me to say. Honestly as long as you pay your taxes and stay loyal to my king I could care less how you run your colony.

##Lieutenant You answer to all of the councillors. That is your job. I asked you how slavery is progressive. I am wise beyond my years. Whats gonna happen? They gonna drag an old man out into the street and execute him? This is a council not a dictatorship. Remember you are here to serve all of the council not just whichever ones you happen to like.

##Captain Rick my policies regarding honor to the king are quite evident in my proposal to name the barracks after our blessed king. My policies are discussion topics. For example just consider that Knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave.

Slavery, by nature is an unecessary evil. It is not sensible to shackle a man in
Service. The unhappy man who has been treated as a brute animal, too frequently sinks beneath the common standard of the human species. The galling chains, that bind his body, do also fetter his intellectual faculties, and impair the social affections of his heart… To instruct, to advise, to qualify those, who have been restored to freedom, for the exercise and enjoyment of civil liberty… and to procure for their children an education calculated for their future situation in life; these are the great outlines of my twin proposals to move our colony with a firm goal of ending this foul practice.

Brain, you're welcome to speak, just please do not try to speak for all of us. I'm not exactly sure where this is being misinterpreted. You're free to negotiate and speak with whomever whenever, be it privately or publicly, but an official offer, or acceptance of an offer, must come by way of a proposal. Anything otherwise is in violation of our laws.

That is fair. I'll amend 5.6 to the following:

##PROP 5.6 - Agree to trade our wool supply for 350 silver and a cannon.

Any reference of trading people, or slavery, or whatever is out of the picture. It is worth discussing, but we have more pressing matters.

I don't ask for unwavering support. I appreciate it, though. I just find that we are already pressed for time making some pretty remarkable decisions in these 48 hour blocs that chaos and disorder is the way that we leave things out that otherwise need to be covered.
brainbomb (290 D)
24 Sep 17 UTC
##Vote yay 5.6

I dont have any agenda as far as our exploration/science/tech. You have all done very well at organizing our interests. I think its not a bad idea to be looking ahead at ways to free ourselves from slavery. The slaves we have are contributing to the advancement of food, housing and a better life for free-men and women. I believe our Governor should endorse a pathway to ending this practice. I feel if we do this and commit to doing it the people we free will love us for our efforts 4 phases I feel is very reasonable and will motivate them in their work. It also embraces the progressive image you all had hoped to convey.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
24 Sep 17 UTC
Lieutenant- I do serve the council and before that the king. The council made of multiple councilors and you are one of which. If you want an answer to how I view slavery as progressive. I do not. But in no way do I support harming our colonists and the kings mission in Vdipia for a morale conundrum. Now elder brainbomb if I may, my response was because your rhetoric was quite aggressive and whil I serve the council and the king I am by no means a Slave, I too am a. Pointer and if you wish to get aggressive with me, I too can get aggressive... and leave on the next ship.

I'm sure the king would look forward to t report that a nobody elder from a random merchant ship is causing problems on his colony.

Captain Rick- I am by no means calling into question your loyalty to our king but am simply expressing my footing and where I stand on matters. I am worried by how defensive you have become.
CosmoSounder (115 D)
24 Sep 17 UTC
Councilor Brain, while I am pleased to see you join us again, I am not happy to see you have already started a row with Governor Bo, especially over a seemingly fictitious claim that he is attempting to silence you. It would appear he challenged your independent ability to make a "Final Offer" as any of us would have done, and then made a proposition banning the trade of colonists something I believe we are all on board with and yet you still continue to ramble on as if you are a man on an island.

Even without the above madness, I have been here with bo for two years at this point. He has earned my loyalty. You are still a newcomer, please do not make us pick sides, I fear you might not like where it ends up.

As to the issues at hand. I will respectfully Abstain from Props 5.1 and 5.2. While I appreciate the honors I, like all of you, work for the betterment of the colony and would not feel right voting on granting myself honors.

While I empathize with Councillor Brainbomb and Kench in their disdain for slavery, I cannot pretend to enjoy that moral luxury. Someday when our colony is prosperous and stable I will march right along with you to abolish slavery in our land. Until that time however, I must place the well being of our colony and its citizens above these others. While all manner of comfort should be granted to them, and a path to citizenship has been established already, I therefore cannot support 5.3 at this time.

In regards to 5.4, I am sorry to say that that seems to cut the legs out from the punishments for non-violent and non-disruptive crimes. Setting a uniform term of service makes the first offense far to severe and does nothing for discouraging future crime. [Side Note. When I proposed those bills I specifically used the terms Hard Labor with slavery in parentheses. The point here was to differentiate between criminals who are not actually being made slaves, but for the sake of the out of game mechanics Byron has to deal with they would be counted as slaves. In that sense 5.4 is irrelevant as it pertains to no cases except the most extreme cases of offenders].

As for the other propositions I will ##Vote Yea on 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.8, 5,9, 5.10, 5.11, 5.12, 5.13, 5.14, 5.15, 5.16, 5.17

As for the matter of the Witch. I have a possible suspect, but nothing solid yet. There is an individual in town who has aroused my suspicions enough that I dare not let her know I suspect her, but I have nothing solid enough to identify her once and for all as the witch. I wish to bring this matter up privately with you as to our course of action going forward.

My best idea is for me to keep a close eye on her over the next few months, discretely of course. Hopefully I can find something incriminating, or god forbid, catch her in the act. Accusations of witchcraft can be a dangerous thing, and I fear letting that into the community prematurely.

Can anyone remind me of what the Lieutenant has done so far? What are we paying him for exactly. It sounds like hes just a spineless yes man who claims to have beliefs but would prefer totalitarian rule of law over actual discussion. Who was I proposing to harm? Now hes threatening to leave and snitch on the colony to the king because he doesnt like me.

##Prop 5.7 Give the Lieutenant 10 lashes publicly and a week without pay until he learns not to make threats to councillors or the colony.

24 Sep 17 UTC
Councilor Brain, the Lieutenant has not been called upon to help defend the colony yet, but he will be invaluable when that day comes. The Lieutenant is not being paid to be here, he is here of his own free will and may leave if he chooses to do so, though I would ask him to carefully make that decision. There will be no public embarrassment of any councilor or advisor unless they commit a major crime against the colony, not because they disagree with one another.
CosmoSounder (115 D)
24 Sep 17 UTC
Brain! The Lieutenant serves to protect this colony and alongside the Colonel lead our militia, and he has done so for 2 years! Since you have raised the point, what have YOU done for the colony thus far! Also as you have been keen to ask of others, please read, not only is there already a Prop 5.7, but there is a prop 5.17!

Calling yours 5.18 as it should be, I refuse to even submit a vote on such a ridiculous and petty affair. You have the right to vote on this council, the Lieutenant does not, call it a victory and let the issue go.

I have been thinking about adding some government structure to what we already have.

Firstly, I would like to appoint Cllr Ike as the Colony Manager. He has been fantastic in the past few phases in counting up resources and ensuring that we are using what is available in the most efficient manner. Likewise, he is in close contact with both Specialist Killian and the Lieutenant, which will be quite helpful in allocating resources. Of course, all resource allocation decisions will still be made through proposals, but he should be able to help lay things out for those of us (me) that can’t do math. Between him, Kench as the Scribe, myself, and all of the Councillors staying deeply involved, I think we have what we need to make the best decisions for the colony.

Secondly, I want to consider filling the following positions in our colony:

1.) Officer:

Our Captain and our ranking Lieutenant have a very dangerous job on their hands. Captain Rick has thus far moderated his involvement, which is his own fair choice. The Lieutenant, on the other hand, is massively important to us and were something to happen to him, we need to have a ranking structure in place so that someone could step in. Likewise, this move allows us to create an actual hierarchy in the military, headed by the Lieutenant, that makes the military stronger, more orderly, and better prepared in the event of chaos without actually exhausting any extra resources.

The Officer would be an existing soldier appointed by the Lieutenant. Ideally, this person would be someone that the Lieutenant finds agreeable, orderly, and acceptable to lead in the worst case scenario and step in as a specialist. Barring that catastrophic turn of events, the Officer ranks below the Lieutenant and thus does not have the influence of a Specialist, but does have an elevated platform such that he may communicate with the Council.

2.) Teacher:

We have not just men but women and children, and there will be more children. Children can work on farms, but the best place for them to be for at least part of the day is in school, learning. The Teacher ensures that this can happen.

The Teacher would be creating a new institution all on their own, which means that we would also need a place to host school. This could be the Teacher’s home or it could be a new building. This will obviously require some discussion amongst ourselves. If any colonists were previously teachers on the mainland, they might make our best initial candidates.

3.) Messenger:

It appears that we will soon have our first encounters with native people. For this, having someone who has studied one of the native cultures here and speaks one of the native languages will be critical. This person will be our first line of communication with new people and should always be accompanied in some manner by soldiers, and should be able to stand up for himself and evade capture were things to go awry. Because of my role as a Councilor, I can’t take that chance myself. I propose that Moon Cat and I begin trying to train a colonist in the ways of the language here in order to extend our reach.

4.) Merchant:

I believe we had a Merchant on our Council, but I see no trace of him as of late, so I assume he has disembarked on other journeys. We could use someone who is not only loyal to our cause but knowledgable in the ways of trade to potentially open up commerce avenues for us down the road once we have made contact with natives near and far.

Trusting a single colonist with decisions of trade is obviously not a good idea, so trades should still be discussed with the Council prior to approval, but certainly this person would be invaluable nonetheless.

5.) Jailer:

If we are, in fact, at some point going to move away from slavery (which I believe should happen, though not at this junction), then another form of punishment is necessary. A jailer would supervise convicts. Someone who is strict, strong in stature and in mind, and willing to dole out necessary punishment - without killing - would be perfect for this position.

Personally, I believe it unnecessary to build a jailhouse, so I think that this position should remain vacant until slavery is no longer necessary, at which time slave quarters could be converted into jailhouses and hard labor could be used as a punishment.

6.) Priest:

We voted against bringing a Priest with us as a specialist. However, I imagine that it would boost morale and reduce corruption if we had a priest, particularly one who is not here for the sake of power (i.e. Father Julius) but in truthful and honest faith. I do not intend for the Priest to take up any political platitudes, though of course, as a voice of morals and conscience his input might be more influential than some other voices. Filling this position in the name of the King will no doubt lend credence to our cause and garner us some support from back home, which we need, as thus far we have done very little to return the favor to the King who is, after all, the reason we are all here in the first place. Thus, I propose that he have the option of sending a representative to New webDipia of his Kingdom to preach our traditional ways in the name of the King.

7.) 3 Doctors:

With the permission of Dr. Haliburton, I am interested in offering him some help. With our Chemistry Lab fully functioning and our technology only improving, the necessity for better medicines and remedies to everyday problems, as well as the eventual advent of vaccines, is a priority. Dr. Haliburton has proven incredible for us so far and should be more than capable of training some qualified candidates as assistants that can provide direct care to those that need it and allow him to work more effectively.

All that said, I offer the following proposals -

##PROP 5.18: Allow Lieutenant Webster to appoint a preferred Officer and establish a ranking system for our military. He is, after all, the leader of our Military.

##PROP 5.19: Consider candidates for the Teacher position, and commit to building a schoolhouse in the future.

##PROP 5.20: Train a Messenger in preparation for contact with natives.

##PROP 5.21: Find a loyal colonist willing to assist as a Merchant.

##PROP 5.22: Have a candidate in mind as a Jailer if we abolish slavery.

##PROP 5.23: Ask the King to recommend a Priest that has no interest in political power but a vested interest in bringing our Faith to New webDipia.

##PROP 5.24: Allow Dr. Halliburton to train three assistants who will be removed from our regular workforce.

In lieu of recent events, I would also like to propose the following -

##PROP 5.25: Prepare a feast for each of our three specialists and all that they have helped us accomplish so far (costs 50 food). There is no sense in forgetting how valuable they are and will be down the road.

From the book of Webdippia
Exodus 21:2-6

When you buy a slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out alone. But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.

[Suggestion] Alternate winning conditions
vDiplomacy has a way to set up "alternate winning conditions", e.g. to customize how many turns are played and/or how many SCs need to be conquered before a winner is declared. For example, we can have a game of Classic running for 14 turns (Fall 1907).
