A Book You'd Like To See Made Into a Movie?
With Great Expectations, Anna Karenina, Les Miserables and The Hobbit (Part 1, lol) all getting releases this year and The Great Gatsby, Much Ado About Nothing, and Romeo and Juliet (even *I* am wondering why this one's being made...there's already a ton of versions, the '68 versions classic, and for some reason people like the DiCaprio/Danes one as well) due out 2013, literary films seem to be making a comeback...books you'd like to see as a film?

Thoughts on Hamilton, which big-bucks LA team is best...and might we have a Freeway Series here in LA come October? ;)

Boehner might not be speaker
In the new congress, there will be 234 Republicans and 200 Democrats. If dissatisfied conservatives want to get rid of Boehner, they only need 16 votes to stop his election. Then the GOP caucus would have to pick someone else. Any thoughts?

Making Friends…Again (A Business Story)

I’m the proud father of two teenage daughters, and unlike boys that fight with fists and then make up and move on, girls can be down-right mean! Over the past couple years, I’ve watched my youngest struggle with the changing dynamics of her peer group. She’s seen friends do mean things to each other and alienate girls that were once “part of the group”, and for a while she lost a good friend who was changing due to peer pressure. One lesson we have always taught our kids is to be prepared to forgive, and never throw away a friendship. Recently my daughter’s “lost” friendship was restored; whatever had caused them to drift apart was forgiven, and a new friendship is blossoming again. Are things the same? No, but maybe they are better this time, because the friendship is restored, she is wiser and now knows what to look for if things get shaky again. The next time trouble crops up, I’m confident they can make peace before friendships are broken.

Business relationships are much the same as friendships. CATS CO. and N.S. International used to be as my daughter and her friend, but something happened, something bad, that broke the partnership. I’m here today to tell you that I want the friendship back; that the players that broke the trust are no longer here, but the core talents of CATS CO are still here – and I’m anxious to serve you again.

I’m a Technical Recruiter with CATS CO, but I’m also a former Automotive Engineer (BSEE from MSU) with experience at the Tier 1 and OEM level. I understand your technical needs from experience, not just from a job description, and can work with candidates to guide the best fit to you.

I hope that in this coming year we can renew an old business partnership, just as a broken friendship can be restored through understanding.

Please let me know when I good time for us to speak might be so that we can discuss your current openings, and renew a business partnership I hope can last for years to come.

Have a very wonderful holiday season if I do not hear from you before Christmas!

Good idea. You need to correct grammar a little but I like the approach. In fairness you have little to lose so making the effort is good business. Good luck with it.
Honestly, I'd give this a two-second glance before it got tossed/deleted. If I'm a former client and you want to re-initiate the relationship, then give me a call, try to set up a lunch or drinks. If I have any interest, I'll take you up on it for the personal catch-up and give you a chance to tell me what you're doing now, business-wise. This kind of fakey form letter is more likely to alienate me. Just my two cents.

Hanged -- all the conventional routes have failed. Someone lost the account before I was here, who is universally proclaimed as a dick. The contact person is a woman -- hence the touchy-feely approach -- and I would never send this email to a guy. As for it being a fakey form letter -- it is actually a real anecdote used to tackle a very specific situation, and therefore is not at all a form letter. Irony...Perhaps you've never received a thousand sales emails in which you are given a horrifyingly boring overview of a company and what they will do for you. My purpose here was actually to say, "Hey...here is a personal touch..." hoping to snag a woman's emotional response. Therefore, I declare you solidly masculine! :)

A "conventional" business letter will get a 1-second glance...so I'm glad you have given me twice the time as normal! :) I'm being snarky, but I do appreciate your comments. There is no perfect approach in any sales pitch, but I'm always curious on people's feedback.

Hanged - curious - what do you do and how old are you?
I see. I thought this was your business contact that had lapsed, not someone else's botch job. Well, it doesn't really work for me, but perhaps the emotional hook will resonate with your intended target. Good luck.

I'm 40, and decline to state.

I would have to say, coming from a job in which I recieve a lot of approaches / pitches from people wanting to win business with my organisation, this is ok, but to be honest if I saw this, I would assume that it was a generic email / letter being sent out to a bunch of former customers of your firm. It doesn't actually feel targeted or specific enough. Perhaps you could make a more specific reference to what went wrong in the past, and why it wouldn't happen again?

But to be honest trying to regain a contract which your firm lost because you were awful to do business with... that's pretty hard.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
11 Dec 12 UTC
(Also by the way, this is probably outwith your control, Krellin, but your company's website is *awful* - loaded with jargon and marketing-speak without actually going into much detail about what exact services you offer)
krellin (80 DX)
11 Dec 12 UTC
Jamie - yes, restoring lost business sucks, especially when you are trying to correct someone else's fuck-up and can't do a personal meas-culpa.

Oh well...it's fun to try, and I'm a hero if I succeed, and boss says, "Good try" if i dont'.

I am not sure what how you feel about getting feedback from a cheater. But, I would throw out partnership here " but something happened, something bad, that broke the partnership. I’m here today to tell you that I want the friendship back;" And either insert friendship or substitute another soft word/phrase such as "...something bad that ended our fondness for each other." Or "something bad that broke our alliance." I know the second is a little to webdippy but, if you don't want to sound to soft I think alliance would be a good substitute. I would probably take very from the last season and I would maybe even take out the "if I don't hear from you by Christmas." If it is important to leave in Christmas I would say something like "Have a wonderful holiday season and a Merry Christmas!" or Have a wonderful holiday season and we here at Cats Co wish you a Merry Christmas!" I am sure it isn't going to be read this way but when you put in the 'if' it sounds like you don't wish them a happy holiday season if you do hear from them. That is just a funny issue with conditional statements. But, other than a few run on sentences and minor grammar issues you can't really lose.
smcbride1983 (517 D)

And jumping off of Jamie's suggestion, would it be improper to list your daughter's name. It gives a real sense of connecting. They now know your kids name. Then when you do get their business back they feel kind of chummy with you. You are like a coworker or friend rather than a business partner. "Hey Krellin how is April doing with her Field hockey team?" type stuff.

There are several negative aspects of the story paragraph that should probably be axed. And it isn't very tight. Rather than go through line by line, I've just edited it and will paste my suggestion below...

I’m the proud father of two teenage daughters. No, but they are probably even better this time, because they know each other better.

I like the fact that alderian pulled the girls areean bit. I can see that as rubbing a womN the wrong way.
Octavious (2701 D)

I have to confess I don't like it.

You give the impression with your tale that the cock-up back in the day was partly their fault (which may be true, but they won't thank you for telling them), and that the argument/problem is now forgotton (which would annoy the hell out of me if I was them. I'd want the arguement to be well remembered and actions taken so it never happens again).

The general soppy lovey dovey theme is an interesting touch, and it may even been taken as a positive, but I would be tempted to lose the "Have a very wonderful holiday season" stuff and replace it with a less corporate "Wishing you all (maybe with a few names of the people you know work there followed by "and the team") a truly merry Christmas", but that's a personal preference.
krellin (80 DX)

Thanks for the various input....I will let you know how it works out. I suspect....no rely. But we'll see. As I said - we're trying to resurrect and account some dufus jacked up, and subsequently got fired, so no gain is not loss, either, other than a few hours time.

12 Dec 12 UTC
Actually I think it's a good letter. If nothing else it's sincere. Nothing fakey or form-ey about it. I think it would be even more effective if you told them how you feel about black people though. It's best to move forward with honesty and integrity.

So I guess Krellin isn't the economic proffesor I had who speaks in the exact same sarcastic tones and treats everyone who takes his classes as idiots.
erist (228 D(B))
12 Dec 12 UTC
Sorry, but this would be gone before I made it through the first paragraph. A paragraph which is hard to read by the way. Why not be much more succinct and direct. Just say straight up, "Look, I know that we lost your business in the past through some lapses in judgement. I want to let you know that we have let that person go, and I'm prepared to do whatever it takes to win your business back. I'd love to set up a phone conversation with you in the near future to find out what that is."

No need for multiple paragraphs here, just say we screwed up, we want to fix it, let's set up an appt soon to talk. If I'm your person, I don't really care about your daughters, nor what is going on in their peer group, and I resent comparing the business termination of a relationship to a teenage spat.

Says the anti-capitalist business-advice-giver.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
12 Dec 12 UTC
It's probably impossible to predict how this type of thing would go over.

I for one favor communication via long-form text, such as this, and the better-written or more creative, the better, so I would probably be receptive to this, but who knows what the other person likes. Some people fetishize face-to-face interaction and would see this as weak, but I like it. Try to take your best guess based on who you think would be reading it I guess.

Good luck to you.

On that note I have often taken a fairly blasé approach to a few cover letters and such with jobs that I thought I had a fairly slim chance of landing interviews with, and in my limited experience, the more unconventional ones seem just about as likely as the boring straight-laced ones to get a call back. So it's a wash, I guess.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

"I do like the part where you mention you are an engineer. Depending on who will be receiving this, I'd expand on that."

Lol this reminds me of a joke I heard someone tell recently:

How do you know if someone's an engineer?

Don't worry, they'll tell you.

Originally I heard that joke about Texans instead of engineers but as someone who is surrounded by both a lot of the time, I can testify to the truth of either one lol.
