A Book You'd Like To See Made Into a Movie?
With Great Expectations, Anna Karenina, Les Miserables and The Hobbit (Part 1, lol) all getting releases this year and The Great Gatsby, Much Ado About Nothing, and Romeo and Juliet (even *I* am wondering why this one's being made...there's already a ton of versions, the '68 versions classic, and for some reason people like the DiCaprio/Danes one as well) due out 2013, literary films seem to be making a comeback...books you'd like to see as a film?

Thoughts on Hamilton, which big-bucks LA team is best...and might we have a Freeway Series here in LA come October? ;)

How To Hucka-Be An Ass Opportunist About a National Tragedy

request for stats

Can anybody provide stats on "rampage killings" in the USA compared to the rest of the world? Everybody (me too) seems to think it's a problem that happens in America at a far higher rate than other countries. But I haven't found any actual evidence to support that thought.

I'm not interested in pro or anti gun control arguments.
I'm not interested in your opinion.

I'm interested in statistics published in a peer reviewed journal - I looked and couldn't find anything, but will continue to search.

No comparison to another nation, but surprising numbers nonetheless: <http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/08/guns-in-america-a-statistical-look/>

The US is number 28 in homicide rates in the world, which, while one could argue is quite low considering it has the most guns per person in the world (88 per 100; Yemen is second with 54 per 100), is really a high number if you ask me. Some more stats that you might find useful: <http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2012/jul/22/gun-homicides-ownership-world-list>

From the Huffington Post, obviously biased but statistically true nonetheless: <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-rosenthal/us-gun-violence-by-the-nu_b_139879.html>
_____

The debate… Japan vs. United States:

• Japan - 2 homicides related to guns in 2006 - some of the strictest gun regulations in the world; nearly no gun ownership
• United States - 10,226 homicides related to guns in 2006 - we all know what the laws are by now

For those that would say the gun ownership skews the numbers… Germany is #4 in gun ownership (30 of 100 people own a firearm) - 158 homicides related to guns in 2010.

The rate of private gun ownership in the United Kingdom is 6.72 firearms per 100 people. In 2009, only 18 people were murdered with a firearm. Within the last 14 years, the year with the highest number of gun caused homicides was 2004, with 52 people killed.
____

All of the above from <http://ivn.us/2012/07/25/gun-control-an-international-comparison/>. Make of it what you will.

Thanks, bo, but again, that's not really at all what I'm asking.

Rampages, or mass killings, a la columbine or batman, are they worse here in America than in other places? I can't believe that a sociologist SOMEWHERE hasn't asked this question.

A quick google showed me this:
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/12/14/1337221/a-timeline-of-mass-shootings-in-the-us-since-columbine/?mobile=nc

So in the last decade there have been 25 shootings in America since 2002.

The problem with comparing America with any other high income country is America has at least 4 times the population.

For Example, I couldn't find any lists that showed shootings in Canada, but I have seen on the news 4 mass shootings this year in Toronto (Eaton center shooting, Toronto street party shooting, can't remember the name of the other 2).

So adjusted for capita, Canada has had more shooting this year, then America has had since 9/11.

Yeah, I know it wasn't quite what you were looking for, YJ. Also not quite what oyu're looking for but good information in an argument: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/07/mass-shootings-map

Another graph on general violence using assault weapons in USA versus other nations; http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/files/2012/07/America-is-violent-graph.png

From the Washington Post: "Eleven of the 20 worst mass shootings in the last 50 years took place in the United States." Second place is Finland with two.(http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/07/20/the-worst-mass-shootings-of-the-past-50-years/)

Also worth considering that Sgt. Robert Bales' shooting spree in Afghanistan was an American doing it in another nation.

Again, not quite what you want, but certainly shocking.

Unless you provide the names for those other two, fasces, it can be concluded that Canada saw 0 mass shootings this year. The proper FBI classification of a mass shooting is 4 deaths, excluding the gunman. Eaton and Toronto don't qualify.

Both of the mentioned weren't rampage shootings anyway, they were gang violence / targeted attacks.

Google Scholar gave me the following.

I read a few abstracts but not whole articles: Research in school shootings - an over view of School homicides/suicides. Seems to focus on USA.;
A book called Rampage: The social roots of school Shootings;
From Columbine to Palestine: A comparative analysis of rampage shooters in the United States and volunteer suicide bombers in the Middle East. It says it in the title;
Repeat Tragedy Rampage Shootings in American High School and College Settings, 2002-2008 - Focuses on similarities and differences between HS and College student shooters in the USA;
A Comparative Analysis of Suicide Terrorists and Rampage, Workplace, and School Shooters in the United States From 1990 to 2010. Another comparative study within US
Suicide by mass murder: Masculinity, aggrieved entitlement, and rampage school shootings again in the US but it points to some other events in Europe that are similar. Primarily focused on the fact the are committed by males

Maybe the citations and other articles that cite these can help you

Boehner might not be speaker
In the new congress, there will be 234 Republicans and 200 Democrats. If dissatisfied conservatives want to get rid of Boehner, they only need 16 votes to stop his election. Then the GOP caucus would have to pick someone else. Any thoughts?

...No. Contracting to 20 is ridiculous. The Panthers and Coyotes can both be axed or moved...the Hurricanes and Predators can be moved or somehow made viable...Columbus...but the Ducks, Sharks, Blues, Devils--those are all decent franchises in decent markets.
