A Book You'd Like To See Made Into a Movie?
With Great Expectations, Anna Karenina, Les Miserables and The Hobbit (Part 1, lol) all getting releases this year and The Great Gatsby, Much Ado About Nothing, and Romeo and Juliet (even *I* am wondering why this one's being made...there's already a ton of versions, the '68 versions classic, and for some reason people like the DiCaprio/Danes one as well) due out 2013, literary films seem to be making a comeback...books you'd like to see as a film?

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have signed Josh Hamilton Formerly of the Texas Rangers: 5 years, $125 million. SO! The Angels signing Pujos, Wilson, Hamilton, with Trout and Trumbo coming up from the farm...the Dodgers with Mag Johnson's checkbook signed star after star after star...West Coast Yankees! Thoughts on Hamilton, which big-bucks LA team is best...and might we have a Freeway Series here in LA come October? ;)

Boehner might not be speaker
In the new congress, there will be 234 Republicans and 200 Democrats. If dissatisfied conservatives want to get rid of Boehner, they only need 16 votes to stop his election. Then the GOP caucus would have to pick someone else. Any thoughts?

LinkedIn
Do you use it, and what do you use it for?

General survey...
I'm on it, and I kind of regret it. I don't use it for anything, and I constantly get requests and reminders from other people who supposedly want to link to me. I don't think they really want to link to me; I think it's just driven by their search engine or whatever. I have no reason to think that I've derived any benefit from being on it.

I use it for marketing my business. It has been somewhat helpful.
I echo Hanged Man's comments exactly.

I got it after I got my current job, maybe it will prove useful if I change jobs. However, the fact that I neglect it entirely likely means it won't.
Yonni (136 D(S))

I'm with Lando and THM on this. Got it, never fully set it up. Don't use it.
Might be useful depending on your job. I imagine marketing (as LakersFan suggested) is pretty well suited to use it.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I got it and use it to keep in touch with professional contacts. I've recruited a former coworker (and one former boss) over to my new employer becauseI kept in contact with them there. It is my facebook for business. I don't connect with friends on LinkedIn and I don't connect with colleagues on Facebook. Works well for keeping the two sides of my life separated.
LakersFan (899 D)

That is a brilliant way to arrange things Draugnar.
Its almost as if the two services were designed with that in mind!!!!

Do no people in your life fit both categories?

I keep in touch with both colleagues and friends via webdiplomacy.net. It's the Bentley or social media providers.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Yes, Lando. A few do and they are on both. Former colleagues who are also friends, but I have turned people down on each for reasons of "you are a coworker and my personal life is my business" but more often it's "you are someone from my eprsonal life, but I am not giving you the chance to fuck me if you ever get angry by letting you into my professional life when you work at a used car dealership". A lot of the folks I went to high school with back when West Chester, OH was still farming community are pot heads and alcies and I don't care if their car wash is having to for one sales. My colleagues in New York and LA couldn't give a fuck and I don't need the connection making me look bad. You have to have a certain standing to make it into my professional circles and we have to be really close friends from a former employer or client to manage to get on my facebook friends cause the wierdos from hgih school are either pushing booze, pot, or Jesus and ain't a one of them has a lick of brains anymore.
That makes sense. Some of us have people in our personal lives with, whom we've shared no professional relationship, but that are respectable professionals in their own right. Some of these people I may even ask for a reference from. I wouldn't think twice about introducing them to my professional relations whether through linkedin or otherwise.

Either way, if I change jobs I am definitely e-mailing Barn3tt for a reference and citing him as top gunboat player on webdip.

eh, I have one, but I don't like it at all. Not very good UI and I have better ways of getting in contact with most of the people on there.

Also, since you mention it, krellin, I suggest you remove webDiplomacy from your interests. If anyone figures out your username, that would be the end of your career.

I'm with Draug - LinkdIn is only for profesinal contacts, not friends. As for Facebook...deactivated it months ago and have no desire to go back...but I wouldn't friends a business contact if I had it.

We use LinkedIn for recruiting candidates, and I also use it to identify internal contacts within companies when we are prospecting for new clients. All the silly executives out there that don't take calls and wont' let their secretaries hand out there contact info...most of them are susceptible to the ego trip of broadcasting their personality on line and thus provide me with the contact info I need to slip past the barriers they have erected. <heh heh...I said "erected..." heh heh...>

LinkedIn seems to have little value other than to assist people in changing jobs from what I see. Most of the forums I have joined (for the purposes of recruiting talent) are 50% recruiters...Ugh...yes....I am part of the slime infesting LinkedIn...
Facebook is for friends. I think you get out of FB what you put into it. If you're the type of person with many active FB friends and you spend a lot of time on the site, you probably will get a lot out of it. If you only check in every once in a while, you probably don't understand the fuss. I spend way too much time on FB, but happily less now than when I played Kingdoms of Camelot.

I spent way too much time on FB, and, frankly, got very little out of it other than that really drab, mundane and boring crap that people do in their lives in 85% of the posts. Other than that was the political side of things...which often disclosed how little I know my old friends, and sometimes how little I wish to know them now. Then there was the amusing poltical posts (for us political junkies...) but for the most part...it just took me away from my family. I have WebDip to distract me from family. FB is gone. I still love you guys.
As a university student trying to look for summer work, Linkedin is absolutely useless.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Dec 12 UTC
No kidding. It's also useless for burger flippers and janitors and retail clerks. It is for professionals - people already established in their careers and looking to professionally network.
Linked in needs to be used correctly, its about building long term connections and learning about the field in which you work or want to work. If you use it to try to "find a job" you will probably be disappointed in most industries.
Frankly, all you college kids out there who want to find a cool job, go on Linked in and explore the possibilities. If you are on there just looking for a job people can smell bullshit from a mile away. They can also smell sincerity.
I should say cool job down the road. Use Linkedin to identify what you want so you can use your college education and work experience to prepare yourself
I was not on Linkedin soliciting for jobs. What I meant is that I joined onto some groups such as "Science Jobs" too look for any job postings related to my field, and that it was not useful for that purpose.

NHL Contraction/Relocation (*Insert "The NHL Still Exists?" Joke Here)
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhl-contract-20-teams-183051197--nhl.html
...No. Contracting to 20 is ridiculous. The Panthers and Coyotes can both be axed or moved...the Hurricanes and Predators can be moved or somehow made viable...Columbus...but the Ducks, Sharks, Blues, Devils--those are all decent franchises in decent markets.
