One of the players in this anon game was attepting to guess who the others were, and was posting his guesses about their identities in the game's global tab. One of the other players protested that this was against the rules.

I think this is fine. A more active mod can trump me, but as there is really no basis for such claims, they really are meaningless. So what if Germany claims Turkey is abgemacht? What difference does it make? There is no proof.

But yeah, that ruins the game a lot of the time.

Its not against the rules. If its something that concerns you, you should discuss it in the forum thread before the game starts. For example, MadMarx always insists on no guessing in his anon games and I mentioned something similar in the thread for the game that Jamiet and I are playing in right now (which is not the game mentioned in this thread)

I think its something that players should discuss and decide on ahead of time since its more an etiquette thing than a rules thing.

Anon games are played because the person wishes to remain anonymous. I have already officially asked the mods in an email.for definitive answer, but if this is it, I will never play anon again. Next thing.you know we will be allowed to talk outside ofbthe game in gunboat...

@abge: it can make a big difference. For example, weaker players may choose to gang up on stronger players. Or players may use past history and knowledge about tendencies to make decisions.

@draug: lol huge over-reaction. i think rules in general are overemphasized here. the seven players in a game (assuming the game started from a forum thread) should decide what etiquette they want to play by. a lot of time guessing identities is almost impossible to prevent. there are some players on the site that i can always identify by the end of 1901, whether i try or not.

Frank - Guess away, but don't *announce* them in global press. That is where the problem lies. I have just been outed in a game by an unscrupulous asshole. I think it is wrong, just as wrong as bypassing press limitations.

I would, by the way, tend to agree that it *should* be against the rules, and that Draugnar does have a valid concern. It just appears that it isn't against the rules currently. I would support such a rule being introduced.

This recently happened to me too. It's an asshole move, but it's not really against the rules, and good players won't care very much.

Of course it isn't against the rules. Is it against ettiquette? I would say that if someone was trying to get someone to do something based on their belief that player A is so-and-so; then that is meta-gaming. If they are just guessing for fun - no harm

Germany stabbed France. France got pissed and called Germany out by name. What motive would be in that except to metagame and get the others to gang up on Germany because of who France thinks he is.

I think that if the game is Anon then obviously players should remain anon. There's no rule against it but it's bad etiquette as maniac said. It's especially bad etiquette when a player does this as he's about to be eliminated. Then it's not for fun but an attempt to influence a game that they couldn't influence while playing.

If the players specify before the game that they don't want such guesses made, then it shouldn't be allowed. If they didn't then I don't see what the complaint is. None of the guesses are provable, and the guesser is more likely than not going to bring the wrath of other players down upon him.

I've been in an anon game where I was ousted as gantz. I was rather pleased :p. Mind you I can see it from Draug's point of view. If I was accused of being draugnar I'd be furious ;)

This whole fucking thread was started over an active game and shoild be locked.

However in the OP I made no reference to the game - I raised a general query which could apply to any anon game.

But...France calling on people to destory Germany because, if I recall correctly, he disagreed with a move IN THE GAME...ie the stabbing of France.

The game needs to be cancelled immediately, though, and as a player in the game I support a cancelation because Jamie BROKE THE RULES by creating this thread.

For the record, I have been accusing players in this game of BEING ME as a tactical ploy. Is THAT illegal, too?

Jamie - you raised a general question which you KNEW was about an ongoing game and which you knew would devolve in to this. You were wrong and you know it. You're like the mentally unstable person who just bought a gun....the reactionary public has just tried and convicted you of a crime of mass murder whihc you will commit in the future....you lose your gun and we get to lock you up...or at least take points away from you if there is any justice.

And no game id has been provided... So either the whole thing is against the rules or none of it cause you can't even search our ids to figure it out.

Krellin - I do the same in private tabs, but never in global. It sometimes plays on others minds and gets them to do your dirty work. I remember this one time convincing some.kid (CM IIRC) I was me, then someone else, then a third party all.the while mopping the floor with him. But I never used global.chat for that.

I never thought I'd say this, but krellin is right. Several of you are discussing this openly, just do it in your global chat and leave the thread as a general question.

Oh and I should point out I got my ass chewed by the mods (abge IIRC) forbdoing it as it somehow violated anon rules. I guess I should have told him.to.fuck.off then as clearly the mods don't feel that way now.

I'd say Jamie shouldn't be held responsible for others taking a relatively harmless yes or no question which made no pointed reference to his own identity within the game and interpreting it as license to discuss the game and its workings in detail and with reference to specific powers and their presumed controllers. Even if the reaction was predictable, we are each responsible for our own actions.

Jamie, you didn't simply asked a simple question, you indicated it happened in a game you are in, thus provoking discussion of that game. You should have asked the question without connecting it to something happening in a current game.

As someone in that game I'm more upset by this thread than the outting, correct or not, in the game. And personally I'm against outting people in anon games. So how about we all just shut the hell up and finish the game as best we can?

I was agreeing with Alderian to keep the game specific discussion in the game. I was just thinking about starting another thread that shows semi-anon is not anon to Russia at all.

Did you know that the countries tied in scs are always ordered by player points? so if you get Russia, you can easily determine every other nation in a semi anon game. or if you have either the second.most points or the second.least points and end up at the top or bottom of the list you can figure it out as well.
