Webdip's Political compass
http://politicalcompass.org/crowdchart.php?showform=&Ora=-5.62,-5.74

just copy and paste the url, add your own PC score (as determined here: http://politicalcompass.org/test), and post the resulting url in this thread... rinse, lather and repeat...

I don't like this test, the statements are too black/white or are poorly worded. But anyway:
Economic Left/Right: -6.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.51
Thucydides (864 D(B))
22 Dec 10 UTC
Agreed that the test is a bit... off.

Economic Left/Right: -4.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.21

Doesn't reflect how I feel about the role of the state in private life quite correctly. Second number should be much much closer to zero imo.

But what're you gonna do. It's mostly close-ish I guess.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

there is an faq - it responds to criticism of the statements with :

"Most of them are slanted ! Some right-wingers accuse us of a leftward slant. Some left-wingers accuse us of a rightward slant. But it's important to realise that this isn't a survey, and these aren't questions. They're propositions - an altogether different proposition. To question the logic of individual ones that irritate you is to miss the point. Some propositions are extreme, and some are more moderate. That's how we can show you whether you lean towards extremism or moderation on the Compass." -http://politicalcompass.org/faq#faq1

Communists weren't/aren't particularly socially authoritarian (especially on race, nationality, and women's issues). The author evidently forgot the fact that Communists legalized divorce, ended arranged marriages, and legalized abortion. In the early Soviet period same-sex relations were even legal. In East Germany there was a vibrant LGBTQ community and policies were rather lax.

"Communists weren't/aren't particularly socially authoritarian"

Yet it is under a Communist government that China has enacted it's one-child policy, complete with involuntary forced abortions for those who aren't members of state-sanctioned minority groups - certainly the most reprehensible government policy in force in the world today I can think of. Apparently "women's issues" refers to the right to kill an unborn baby, and not to the right *not* to.
Jack_Klein (897 D)
22 Dec 10 UTC
Tolstoy, you are wasting your time. Putin is a True Believer. He has actually managed to make black into white by sheer force of will. Its rather impressive, really.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
22 Dec 10 UTC
@tolstoy: if you assumed for a moment that you were in power in a country and didn't have to worry about re-election every 4 years, and further that you had a population issue, how would you choose to deal with it? authoritarian yes, but i find it hard to condemn as morally wrong.

@putin: i guess that really tells us what kind of communist you are. Clearly if you were allowed have you way communism would be something different to what most historians remember...

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: George Carlin--"I'm an Entropist...I Like Anarachy!"
For the last one of these chat sessions of the year (that I REALLY enjoy and value, by the way, so thank you all so much, those of you who continue to share your ideas...I respect you so much for taking the time and effort to CARE and to SHARE your opinion) I thought, in the wake of that last "cyber-attack" by self-proclaimed anarchists (at least I think they were) we could discuss anarchy. What "defines" it? To what degree? Good? Bad? What about authoritarianism, the flip side?

this is by far the best gunboat game i've ever played. Guessing France's orders and helping him all the way till 17 SC's. When there was no sign he would draw, I switched sides and forced a stalemate. It was epic.

Getting to know the PBEM Diplomacy Community
In recent days, we have had some vibrant discussions on various threads about our community compared to the PBEM community. In that light, I wanted to share a few emails I received that might be useful for some others, both in shedding light on other communities of Dip players and to provide us with ideas to even further improve our own.

hey people, i would like to play diplomacy with my friends, in real, not online... and we never want to play diplomacy with 7 people at the same time. so i think it is not worth to buy the game, but i have risk and i thougt it would be possible to make a variant on the risk-board (without chancing the board, i could try it with aresible things)
