The weird ways of Johnny Foreigner
As you travel the world more and more you begin to understand that people from all nations and backgrounds are basically the same. Then, just when you're beginning to feel at one with the society you're visiting, you come face to face with a concept so bizarre and alien it leaves you in a state of open jawed incomprehension. Lets hear some stories of the weird things foreigners do!

How's this for weird?
There's this girl at my high school who screams at the top of the lungs whenever she gets frustrated or stressed out. Sometimes we're just working in class and we suddenly hear screaming, and all the freshman are like, "why isn't anybody doing anything?"

Wow. The New Testament actually spells out in the which commandments we have to obey.
Read Mathew 19: 16-30. And note that when Jesus told the man to sell his possessions, he was actually saying one additional commandment we have to obey: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. The man was putting his possessions before God, that is why Jesus told him to sell everything.

Please Help Science
I am entering the third year of a science research class at my high school and so far I have had limited success with my topic, cryptozoology. I mounted an expedition to find Bigfoot, but came up empty handed. In order to have results to present at competition next year I have shifted the focus of the project and I would really appreciate it if you could take this survey.

Well, it's a common criticism of me when I speak at school, on the bus, on this site-iif you're going to criticize the Judeo-Christian Tradition, you HAVE to give it a fair shot first, church and all.
So I'm tuned into "Uplifiting" on Dict TV: All Bible Study and Christian Church programming, all the time! (First observation--Christians can't afford better production values for their Holy Netowrk?) ;)

Winning, Boring Play and Some Stats
A question that has been bugging me for a while and has come up recently. How does one actually go about *winning* a diplomacy game, and why are some people better than others.... more inside.

It is definitely true that some players are better at closing the deal on games and making a win happen, whilst others, like me, generally play a fairly solid game, but without making the breakthrough for the win.

It is a considerable source of annoyance to me that since 22 December 2008, I have not won a proper diplomacy game (I won a gunboat in Febuary '09 too, mind), and I'm wondering what people think is necessary, besides mistakes by opponents, to get a victory. Why do some players make the leap from a good position to a win whilst others of us have to settle for draws?

btw, here is a list of the longest runs of draws without a win:

Shouldn't every well played WTA game end in a draw? I mean people will do anything to keep somone from soloing in a WTA game. I think that most of the people on your list are playing fairly high caliber WTA games where soloing doesn't happen.

I think to properly win a game you need to be tactical but more importantly need to have those mistakes from your opponents. Or just play PPSC where winning probably happens more often. Maybe we need to look at the players who have the best win percentage in WTA games and see how they do it.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
30 Jul 10 UTC
It used to be the case that WTA and PPSC had similar win rates, when you had adjusted for the fact that better players play WTA. Iirc that no longer is the case (though there are a hundred and one things to adjust for).

There will be games where a result other than a draw is unreasonable to expect, however at the same time, some players win more than others, and I doubt it is just about who they choose to play against... so it can't just be down to others making fools of themselves. For a start, they can be encouraged to make a fool of themselves, presumably.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
30 Jul 10 UTC
The fact that WTA and PPSC used to have similar win rates is surprising. I guess we will have to wait for someone who has a good win rate to enlighten us on how they do it, because while my experiences are not many yet, WTA games seem to be very hard to solo. People in the 1904 are already talking about banding together against the strong country to prevent a solo. I just don't see how people can get around that and win.

One quality a person needs to have to get more wins than draws is they must be able to stab someone that you like and have helped you gain success. It's not hard to stab someone in the first or second year. But, try doing it when the two of you each have 12 and are on the way to a draw. You have trusted each other the whole game. You are destroying your common enemies. You like your ally. You have talked the whole game. Then you make your move, push ready, go to bed and dread their message in the morning but know you just won the game.
uclabb (589 D)
30 Jul 10 UTC
The trick is playing live games. :)
Well, for me, I can attribute my long string of draws right off the bat without any wins to pretty much exactly what Rhino's alluding to. It used to be that I would never betray an ally. Now, I'll do it when I think I have a crack at winning if and only if I stab my ally. I like myself less, now that I've had more exposure to the game.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
30 Jul 10 UTC
LOL uclabb...true, that's where my only regular board win came from...

I think it depends on the personality of people, their play philosophy (do you go for the win and then settle for the draw if you must or go for the strong draw and then stab at the end for a win if you can?), some luck, good recognition of which centers are needed when, the power you get (I love Italy, but sorry, you will not win as many games as Italy as...well, pretty much all the other nations, which is alright, I suppose, for me, since I'm a draw-first-stab-second guy) and, of course...

A Will to Power! :p

I think rhino86 has the right idea. Also, no offence to anyone intended, but part of it is rating systems. Whatever they are. They have a tendency to get in your head eventually and they're hard to shake. To get a win you must be willing to do as rhino86 said and be a bastard. But I also think that if you always play it smart then a draw is what you'll probably get but if you shake things up at the right moment you can get the win. But of course you might just get a survive and sometimes you might even get the dreaded defeat. This fact plays itself in the back of all of our minds but perhaps the ones who win more often have a knack, an intuition about this that gives them the advantage they need to take it to the next level.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
30 Jul 10 UTC
Once your within shooting distance of the win, you should be safe from defeat, unless you change your gameplay from the start entirely.

True, you have to be willing to attack former allies, but there is definitely more to it than being cutthroat. MarekP has won 36 games (29%) but doesn't stab. He has told me in press that he will attack me now, and I just couldn't do anything about it. I have very few qualms about stabbing, but the sixth sense of when to stab and how is all too illusive.

There is definitely more to winning than the stab. One should probably aim to get across the stalemate lines in the middle of the game, but this is nearly impossible as Turkey or England, and still difficult as anyone else. I think that there is an element of totally running the game that is needed in the end, to ensure that the powers are appropriately placed for you, etc. etc. Madmarx takes a very "react to what happens" approach, and has a low win rate for his draw rate- is that an indication of the way you should play?

I'm still waiting to hear from some players who win over a quarter of their games about how they go about doing so.
Ebay (966 D)
30 Jul 10 UTC
You just had one! My winning % is 33%. It will go up in less than 12 hours too. But I've only finished 6 games here. Lol.
rhino86 (4191 D)
30 Jul 10 UTC
Well, I wasn't going to mention this but TGM has lured me out. I am always cultivating two allies. From the beginning of the game I am looking for an ally near me and one far away. If I am England I am courting either Germany or France. But, I am also working with Turkey. We are trying to work out ways to eliminate Russia or at least share info. You would be surprised how many times we get to the end and it is the three of us. They both want to fight the other because they are bothy my allies. Several times people would give me their SC's because they would rather I had them then the other guy that hadn't been working with. Has that happened to anyone?
Gobba (2209 D(G))
30 Jul 10 UTC
If I am on the list 3 times, does that make me a multi?

So if winning means you are a bastard, does me being at #1 mean I am the least bastardly among the group? I don't like that implication.
Ebay (966 D)
30 Jul 10 UTC
Why? Do you consider yourself a bastard? Or do you secretly want to be?
But seriously, do you think you can win as often as rhino86 does and not be a bastard? I don't know him and I'm sure he's a nice guy but I'd be willing to bet that he's also a complete bastard too. (No offence intended rhino86. I mean it as a compliment.)
