So How Does This "Football" Of Yours WORK, World?
I can't escape this World Cup thing... my Bio professor (like a lot of my good professors I've had) is from another land he's football-mad, every second that's not about Bio is a joke or about how awesome football is, how he used to love playing goalie... but I DON'T GET IT! I mean, most of the games so far have been TIES- why is this so popular? (How does this game even WORK? A clock counting up, all these rules...?) Football lovers- explain? :)

A Game With Teams (Europe Map)
I'm experimenting with a new game where there are three main teams, and the center nations are going to be England (Allies), Russia (Communist), and Germany (Axis). If you want to join a team, you have to ask them in private and declare them on the global chat if they say yes. They also have to confirm it on Global Chat.

What Shall We Do With a Drunken Player?
What shall we do with a drunken player, What shall we do with a drunken player, What shall we do with a drunken player,
Whose forgotten his turn?

No Backstabbing
Anyone interested in a game where you have to declare war on someone before you move into his/her territories (both SCs and Non-SCs) three hours before the turn end and 30 minutes before you finalize your orders? You are going to be in an alliance with someone, you also have to declare it.

Obama's Coast Guard HALTS Oil Spill Clean-up Effort
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/bp-oil-spill-gov-bobby-jindals-wishes-crude/story?id=10946379

I don't even know what to think. It appears Obama - by allowing his coast Guard (He is commander in Chief) to halt an effective clean-up effort - wants (or at least is allowing) the destruction to be worse. Thoughts?

Lol.

Go troll somewhere else.

Obama didn't make that decision, and you know it. Stop being retarded.
rlumley (0 DX)

From your link:

"The Coast Guard needed to confirm that there were fire extinguishers and life vests on board, and then it had trouble contacting the people who built the barges."

Stupid, yes, but hardly a vast left wing conspiracy to make the oil spill worse.

"After Jindal strenuously made his case, the barges finally got the go-ahead today to return to the Gulf and get back to work, after more than 24 hours of sitting idle."

That was a really effective move of Obama's, eh? A whole 24 hours...

"The governor said the problem is there's still no single person giving a "yes" or "no." While the Gulf Coast governors have developed plans with the Coast Guard's command center in the Gulf, things begin to shift when other agencies start weighing in, like the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service."

HEADLINE NEWS: THE GOVERNMENT IS BUREAUCRATIC AND INEFFICIENT. TELL YOUR FRIENDS.
krellin (80 DX)
18 Jun 10 UTC
OK...yes, the barges were eventually allowed to continue...by why was bureaucratic red-tape an issue to begin with. And this is just one example of the rampant failures of the administration - including turning down international help (which he did on Day 3), the misallocation of resources (example found in the article). Or do you think the administration is handling this crisis effectively?
krellin (80 DX)
18 Jun 10 UTC
@rlumley - I didn't say anything about a vast left-wing conspiracy. But Obama Is in charge - it is his Coast Guard, and his decision that have held back available resources from the region. So it's not much of a conspiracy....it's right out in the open!

If you recall, Obama himself blasted bush for his response in Katrina, and even the political left in this country is now questioning Obama's leadership here.

As far as the "why" he would do it: To kill the oil industry and push through "green" energy initiatives. This is the White House whose motto is "Never waste a crisis", os it really isn't that far fetched.

As far as "trolling"....yeah...you DO look like a troll with your typical snide comments.

rlumley (0 DX)
18 Jun 10 UTC
I think the government is definitionally incapable of handling something correctly. But that isn't Obama's fault, and to suggest otherwise is laughable.
krellin (80 DX)
18 Jun 10 UTC
But Obama himself blamed Bush PERSONALLY for katrina, as did the entire political left and most media outlets...(and I imagine rlumley did, too...lol)

Really, I'm just pointing out the vast political/media hypocrisy, in case you don't catch the undertone of the argument.
jman777 (407 D)
18 Jun 10 UTC
Yeah, I have to say that this post is hugely trollish of you krellin. Atleast read through the entire article and understand it before you post any blanket comment about it on here.
krellin (80 DX)
18 Jun 10 UTC
@rlumley - BTW - I think it is rather sad that your first instinct is a personal attack on me on an issue that is becoming a national debate, not my personal opinion. For the intellectual you try to pass yourself off as, I would expect a little more than throwing insults. Then again...I'm hardly surprised, as you are quite practiced at it when you have nothing better to say (or are cornered in an argument...)
SteevoKun (588 D)

Krellin, wake up. Clearly this is Bush's fault - it's not like Obama was president when this whole mess started. If Bush hadn't been in office for 8 years, then clearly all Americans would be shitting rainbows just like Obama.

18 Jun 10 UTC
@jman - Yeah....I'm the ONLY person to ever lure someone into a discussion by a one-off post with misleading information -- which I was in the processes to clarifying in my next post as rlumley himself posted. Call me a troll, but you two are just sad little haters that toss insults as a gut reaction to everything. It's sad...

krellin (80 DX)

Apparently you geniuses don't understand pragmatic politics. If the oil industry is properly vilified, it will be easy to pass legislation to destroy the oil industry -- for example, raising gas taxes so high that it no longer makes sense. Right now, this is a politically dead issue. Villify big oil, and suddenly a gas tax is not so hard to accept.

Maybe if you guys weren't too smart for your own good, you could think beyond throwing insults to consider possible political outcomes from a natural catastrophe.

I NEVER said Obama is trying to destroy the world. He believes - and is quoted as saying - that the Gulf region will "bounce back". iIt'll be long, hard work and expensive...but 20, 30 years down the road, you won't be able to tell the difference...or it simply won't matter. The earth will not die from this spill - intellectually everyone knows that -- but it is highly emotional, and through manipulating emotion politicians can accomplish initiatives that were otherwise unobtainable. But maybe that sort of pragmatism is beyond your dim intellects...I don't know -- all you are interested in doing is being rude instead of actually exploring legitimate political issues behind this event.
SteevoKun (588 D)

Psst...I'm not ONLY interested in being rude... o.O

@ krellin You should be complaining about the incompetence caused by a goverment bureaucracy afraid to act without crossing every t and doting every i first, and than passing the buck about making a decision.
krellin (80 DX)
19 Jun 10 UTC
So you think Bobby Jindel should have gone against the Federal government and start construction of the barrier island prior to receiving Federal government approval? That's a risky proposition...this administration has investigated past administration officials for simply doing their duty - investigated *lawyers* for issuing opinions on water boarding, for example. So if Jindel stepped out....that's a mighty shaky limb. If anything went wrong, do you think Obama would hesitate to send his Justice Department in?

But - regarding government bureaucracy, Obama is directly responsible for turning down the offer of international aid, including the offer of containmnet booms and skimmer ships. That is a decision that lies *directly( in Obama's lap.

But again...part of this is about examining how one Administration is viewed in comparison to another. IF you apply the standards that Obama himself applied to Bush - that racism drove Bush's lack of inaction, that he was willfully negligent and woefully incompetent....then shouldn't Obama's own standards apply to himself? it s legitimate question.
krellin (80 DX)
19 Jun 10 UTC
And, actually, I AM complaining about a government afraid to act without having every i dotted and t crossed....and the LEADER of that government, the guy that has clearly set the standard of behavior, is Obama. He has NEVER come out and said "do waterever you must....we'll worry about the paperwork later..." He has talked and blustered, he has shuffled the deck in some agencies, but he still has not accepted offers of help from all available resources. That isn't JUST bureaucracy - that is willful negligence...

Classics
I'm studying to be a classics major and was wondering if anyone else on the boards has studied/ is studying Latin or Greek. Personally, I intend the first major works that I read in either language to be the epic poems (working on the Iliad right now!). What about you? (and if there are any veteran classicists stalking these forums, do you have any resources to recommend or advice to offer? Thanks!)

Penalty for CDing.
I am sure this has been brought up before, but there really needs to be a harsher penalty for people who go into civil disorder. It completely ruins the game. If if the penalty was 2x or 3x the bet maybe people wouldn't leave the game the moment things go against them.

Ancient Med is a bad map.
I recommend avoiding this board for diplomacy because it is particularly ill suited to regular diplomacy albeit alright for gunboat. The problem is that due to having only 5 players, a first turn full trust alliance can brute force the game regardless of what the other players do and that is sort of a problem.
