Live Games. What do people think of them?
I have played one live game. And by that I mean 15 minutes turns with the phase set at an hour. I had fun, but it didn't quite work out the way we would have like as three of the players went CD as soon as things didn't go perfectly their way, which I suspect is common problem.
So I think live games are a brilliant idea in principle, but hard to make work. Has anyone had a better experience? Or are there always problems like the kind I experienced?

Best Dr Who ever?
I know this isn;t the season for Dr Who, (though it would be season finale right about now usually!) but as Dr Who has just come on BBC3, it got me wondering what peoplpe thought.

Live game today?
For all of us at-work Diplomaters, what about a live game today?

The crowd from yesterday's failed attempt plus a couple more might do the trick.

Best 10 Minutes of a movie - Dialogue only
.
FirstPreviousNextLast

So we’ve seen a bunch of these threads, best comedy, action movie, but how about best 10-15 minutes of best dialogue. Forget action sequences, car chases, death stars, etc. Just based on dialogue.

My contributions are

The Princess Bridge - from the beginning of the sword fight between Wesley and Inigo until the death of Fessini (sp?) by iocaine powder.
A Few Good Men – Jack Nicholson on the stand
The Breakfast Club – I know there has to be a good 10 minutes in there, but I can’t seem to come up with beginning and ending periods.

Pulp Fiction, hands down. There's multiple good 10 minutes in that movie. Some of the best dialogue of any movie ever, in my opinion.

Forrest Gump, take any ten minutes.
Pete U (293 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
Cyrano de Bergerac (Gerard Depiardieu) - his dying speech, but only in French with subtitles. Poetic, moving, funny, ridiculous genius
Come on, be specific. Any 10 minutes is essentially answering a 'tell me a good movie' quiz. Pick 10.

Any interaction between Jack Sparrow and someone else. Especially when he's bargaining for things though, or his interactions with Will in the first one.

V for vendetta, when V introduces himself to Evey.

Evey: Who are you?
V. : Who? Who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey: Well I can see that.
V. : Of course you can, I’m not questioning your powers of observation, I’m merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.
Evey: Oh, right.
V. : But on this most auspicious of nights, permit me then, in lieu of the more commonplace soubriquet, to suggest the character of this dramatis persona. Voila! In view humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the “vox populi” now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin, van guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.
The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.
Verily this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it’s my very good honour to meet you and you may call me V.
Evey: Are you like a crazy person?
V. : I’m quite sure they will say so.

oh alright, got a time. In Pirates 3 during the Brethren Court part when Jack is trying to convince them all to fight. but I agree with Dingleberry about that part of Princess Bride.

The Big Lebowski--either 1) the first bowling scene when The Dude, Walter, and Donny are bowling, talking about The Dude's rug and Vietnam or 2) the combined scenes at the landlord's interpretive dance ("it's near the In-N-Out Burger") recital followed by Walter's interrogation of little Larry Sellers.

Cyrano doesn't count, it's a play, so by definition, the writing is better :-)

Although Pulp Fiction - the entire scene where Travolta and Jackson are headed to the first killing. The whole thing about the Burger King in France, and the foot massage. That's great stuff.
Chrispminis (916 D)
24 Jun 09 UTC
Memento - When Teddy reveals to the Protagonist the twist and how he changes things so that he'll have a new puzzle and whatnot.

The Quiet Earth - Protagonists monologue when he goes crazy, wears women's clothing and starts preaching to cardboard cutouts of famous people, with a remote controlled cheer track, about his existential angst and loneliness.

American History X - About 40 minutes in, at the dinner table when they're debating racism and social iniquity and it ends with Edward Norton cussing out his Mom's boyfriend with anti-semitic remarks. Intense stuff.

Hope I didn't spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen those movies.

"A Few Good Men – Jack Nicholson on the stand"

No better movie... Simply epic. I can recite that speech by heart.

And even though we're at war in one of our games, I very much like your taste in movies. :-)

I would agree with the latter if I could understand a single thing that they said. :)
I loved the opening 10 minutes of Resevoir Dogs...moreso than Pulp Fiction. Seven guys sitting at the end of breakfast discussing "Like a Virgin", K Billy's SuperSounds of the 70's and Mr.Pink's philosophy on tipping. Classic!
Oh...and a big ditto for Princess Bride. I loved the scenes from the boat up until Vizzini dies.
1. Superman saving California, but not Lois, then reversing time.
2. The assassinations in The Godfather
3. Robocop moving through the drug factory
4. The attempt to blow up the bridge on the Kwai
5. The trial in the Planet of the Apes -- "You cut out his brain, you bloody baboon!"

More to come.

By the way, Quentin T's shtick is so formulaic now. His dialog with Rose McGowan, Kurt Russell et al. was tired and embarrassing.

Oops, this was strictly dialog. Sorry. So only No. 5 stands.

Except possibly for No. 2, also, when Michael confronts his treacherous brother-in-law after the hits.

Classic Pacino.

But for something longer, Kenneth Branagh's rendition of Hamlet's soliloquy in Act 1 is simply astonishing.

The opening of the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Voiceover of Galadriel while we watch the battle of the five armies take place and the ring betrays Isildur.

Smeagol's argument with Gollum (yes, they are the same person) in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
Tolstoy (1962 D)

It's a bit longer than ten minutes and I know this hasn't yet faced the trials of time, but I'm going to go with the last scene of There Will Be Blood.

"I DRINK YOUR....MILKSHAKE!"

There's a ton of parodies on youtube that are quite entertaining.

@Tolstoy: "I'm done"
Good stuff.

I also like the dialogue between Plainview and his fake brother on the terrace the day brother first showed up. "I've built my hatreds up over the years, little by little, Henry".

The Name will be "Fastest Game Ever, I Think" I will post the game link in about 8 hours, but only if I get interest from at least 6 people. Please respond! The power of making deals
I'm in a class (Dave Ramsey's "FPU"), and last night our class revolved around getting big deals and the keys to successful negotiation. I knew most of them and the rest made sense. I could make up a situation for all and demonstrate it. The wife asked me "Where'd you learn all that?" From watching the masters of Diplomacy, of course! :D

Rules Question
I thought you were able to convoy an army to attack a costal province with support from an adjacent fleet/army? Ie: Move London to Brest via Convoy. English Chanel convoy London to Brest. Mid Atlantic support London to Brest.
If you can, how do you input this move?
