Hey guys. I'm just starting this thread out of pure curiosity and it's a pretty good break from all the multi and troll threads out there.
So, I want to know where you got your Diplomacy name. I got mine from my favourite book 'Ender's Game'. Truely amazing, you should all read it.
Hereward77 (930 D)
14 Jun 09 UTC
Mine comes from the Anglo-Saxon 'Hereward the Wake' who led a resistance against William the Conqueror from the Fens.

I read it, and I agree that is is amazing.
Jon Tinsley (0 DX)

Well, my orginal account Knights Dawn (Gave to Cody M. Lucas) was named after a book I have been writing. And Jon Tinsley is my name... So...

Also, Ender's Game was a wee confusing for me, mind expanding on the storyline for me.

all I have to say is that my name does NOT come from this stupid tradingcard game.

I used that name already before I knew that someone in some silly game was named the same way.

but since the net has a great populance of nerds, I get reminded of that cardgame about 2 times a month.

Wheel of Time series by the somewhat recently deceased Robert Jordan; though I still think of Tolkien as the father of Fantasy Fiction (and I second Draugnar's sentiments). I eagerly await Branden Sanderson's completion of Jordan's series though.

From the main character in the fantasy novel "Little, Big" by John Crowley. A really good, if meandering, read, about the intertwining of the Real World with the world of Faery.

Tolkien is amazing, but the fear of his reputation goes before him. For example, the Silmarillion is a great book, with good storylines, but because of certain parts of it (genealogies and poetry mainly) put people off.
Oh, and I hit the keyboard then changed it a little until it looked good.

Spell of Wheels is a song title by Peter Case. It is about a how people's paths cross each other, sometime tangentially and unknowingly, but with lasting effect. The friends are small time criminals who carry knives, only to be met on the road by a black car with people carrying guns. It helps to remind me that this is a game and real war is ugly and true diplomacy actually affects everyone on the planet in some way.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jun 09 UTC
Yes, parts of The Sillmarillion are like reading Numbers from the Old Testament. But the imagery he crafts in The Hobbit (written as a children's book, I might point out) is so vivid you can virtually see Smaug attacking. It is far superior to that 'Harry Potter' crap.

Harry Potter is to Tolkien as
Twilight is to Bram Stoker as
a soy burger is to filet mignion as
a Yugo is to a Corvette.

Ender's Game IS a great book and so are Tolkien's books. Harry Potter, not so much - I'm reading the twighlight books right now just to see what it is that the teenagers are all excited about.

HP and Twighlight are entertaining, but not classics...

OMGNSO (415 D)
14 Jun 09 UTC
"Classics are praised, but never read". Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is perhaps the worst novel I have ever read: Tolkien appears to have no understanding of plot dynamic and his characters spend half their time singing about whatever. It is a good thing an excellent film was made about it, or a great potential would have been lost.

Message box lack of proper word wrap
Is it just me or does the text box not start the new line soon enough and end up in 3-6 words you can't see until posted. People like myself, who like to spell/type properly, must be annoyed as well. Unless it is only on my side, if so what can I do to fix it?
