NHL sucks
I honestly challenge anyone who obviously knows nothing about hockey to keep high morale when the refs are literally maliciously trying to throw the game. I've never seen worse reffing in a series, and anyone who doesn't realize these are humans that actually get effected when the ref delibrately tries to blow a series against your team, should realize that it makes your team feel like they are skating though glue.

You discover a map to buried treasure
There is a catch. While visiting neighors you find the map in the hands of their infant son. The treasure is likely real as youd heard of the map and its fabled promise. The problem is not just that a child is holding the map- its that the family desperately would need the treasure to pay off their debts or they may end up on the streets starving. However you also know the babys mother and father gamble, drink and are rather unsavory. What do you do?

MAFIA 28 -- JEBEDIAH’S WRATH --
INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions, challenging you to put your Diplomacy skills to good use as you become either 'Town' or 'Mafia' or ‘Ghost’ and analyze, argue, convince, lead, schmooze, lie, deceive, and hoodwink to win with the power of your words.

The Town's objective in the game is to lynch all Mafia members before the Mafia outnumber the rest of the Town. The Town can vote to lynch one player in each Day phase. Remember that mafia members are also part of the Town during the day and may manipulate the lynch vote to their liking.

The Mafia's objective is to avoid being lynched in the Day phases and kill Town members during the Night phase so that the Mafia outnumbers and can thus take control of the Town. The Mafia can vote to kill one Town member in each Night phase.

The Ghost’s objective is to avoid being lynched or killed, while having every living player in the game haunted. The ghost has a vote to lynch one player during the day, and can visit a player every night to haunt.

----------------
RULES
----------------
1. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at her or his discretion. The GM will do what they feel is best to maintain the integrity of the game.
2. All players must cast a vote and make at least one additional substantive post.
3. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs, item PMs, or using any encryption tactics.
4. All players and spectators, including players who have been eliminated from the game, are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMs to contact each other.
5. All players are forbidden from deleting previous posts they have made in the game thread.
6. All spectators, including players who have been eliminated from the game, are forbidden from posting in the game thread.
7. All players and spectators, including players who have been eliminated from the game, are forbidden from commenting on or referring to the game in other non-related threads.
8. All players are forbidden from cheating.
9. All players are required to play to their win condition.
10. All players are required to play within the spirit of the game.
11. All players are subject to the regular webDiplomacy rules and guidelines for forum use
12. All concede votes must be sent to the GM and must not be done on the game thread
13. Players may not +1 each others posts, +1ing the GMs is encouraged

Further clarification to the rules are provided below, as follows.

RULE CLARIFICATIONS

1. Given a lack of omniscience, the GM cannot create a rule to resolve all possible scenarios pre-emptively. To compensate for this, the GM is permitted to resolve a given scenario however they see fit, within the remit of the rules listed above, in the interest of all participants. The GM will resolve all scenarios as closely as possible to the intention of the rules, and will present an explanation regarding the adjudication to the greatest possible detail (which does not compromise anything in-game) and as closely in accordance with the written rules as possible. The GM also has the right to take actions that they feel will cause the least amount of imbalance in the game.

2. Voting is a basic requirement of play during the day phases of the game. To ensure that all players are meeting this basic requirement of gameplay, voting is prescribed within the rules. Players must have voted for another player in the game through the course of the day. Players can proceed to unvote if they wish. If you fail to do so, the GM will do their best to replace you out of the game as soon as possible and you will officially be modkilled and banned from the next game. However, we understand that out of game circumstances may arise and if this is the case then the GM reserves the right to give a warning for missing a phase. Out of game reasons for missing a phase must be PMed and explained to the GMs.

3. A minimum posting limit of one required substantial posts has been set to maintain gameplay. Signing up for this game is an expression of commitment to taking it seriously. If a post is not made then the GM will do their best to replace you out of the game as soon as possible and you may be officially modkilled and banned from the next game. However, it is not our intention to comment on various playstyles. As the player you should be free to play the game as you wish so long as the rules are adhered too.

4. All role PMs have been posted in the game start post, and all players (regardless of alignment) will have access to the description of the vanilla town role. This can be found below in the game start post.

Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels that an average person would require outside tools to decode. It is perfectly acceptable to leave "hidden messages" in your posts (for example, spelling out "I AM THE COP" with the first letters of every sentence), but as a rule of thumb, if you don't think the average webDip user could decode it without a decryption service, don't post it.

5. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. The mafia will receive a QuickTopic thread for communicating with one another outside of the game thread during Night phases; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging. If additional items are in the game that warrant subsequent QT’s then those players will be notified of their access to a special QT.

6. This should not present a problem for Mafia games on WebDiplomacy, as site users are not currently able to edit or delete their own posts in any way; however, if you do in fact possess some means of deleting or editing your posts after you've submitted them, you are forbidden from doing so.

7. Spectators, including players who have been eliminated or removed from the game, are not playing the game and therefore should not be influencing the preceding course of the game's development. As such, spectators are not allowed to post in the game thread, to avoid disturbing the progress of the game. Deadposting by players who have been eliminated from the game may be seen as irreverent but is against the rules to avoid any potential disturbance to the balance of the game. Deadposting may result in future suspension, at the discretion of the Council.

8. Spectators, including players who have been eliminated or removed from the game, are not permitted to comment on game-related activities in private messages or any form of comment threads. Special chat rooms will be opened for individuals who to play along with the game in an Observer chat, or discuss the game with full information in the God chat. All individuals are asked to use only these channels to discuss the game while it is still ongoing.

9. Incidents of potential cheating will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Any player caught cheating as per the GMs’ collective judgment will be removed from the current game as a bare minimum. The council may choose to enact more penalties, including exclusion from future participation.

10. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; the GM will exercise caution and restraint in observing this rule. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message the GM first so the GM can determine the best course of action.

11. The “spirit of the game” is, again, a very subjective phrase, but it is fairly assumed that any participants in the game understand what goes against the true spirit of play. If your actions are deemed to harm the grander scope of mafia on webDiplomacy, the GMs may choose to penalize you at their discretion.

12. Under no circumstances are any webDiplomacy forum and site rules, both written and understood, to be broken during mafia games. Any player breaking forum or site rules of any kind will be promptly removed to the game and may be subject to other penalties at the moderators’ discretion. This includes the rules on no spamming, no public cheating accusations (this extends to mafia), answering all communication from the GM team. If you believe a player has broken site/game rules, contact the GMs, otherwise you will also be breaking site/game rules.

13. If someone wishes to concede defeat, they must PM the GM's, or post in their relevant QT thread for the GM's to check it over. Public concessions are not permitted.

14. You are not permitted to click the "+1" on any other player's in-game posts. Giving +1s to the GMs, by contrast, is actively encouraged.

15. You are not permitted to post any transcripts or copies of QT discussions; whether it be Mafia QT or otherwise in the game. This breaks the ‘spirit’ of the game and would constitute a rule violation.

VOTING
There are three types of voting within this game: collective voting to lynch players in Day phases, collective voting to end a Day or Night phase, and Mafia voting to kill town members in Night phases.

The first level of voting is for whom you intend to lynch. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before your intended vote target. (e.g., ##VOTE ND) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. In the event of a tie during a lynch vote, no one shall be lynched. However, you do need to have two octothorpes and the word VOTE clearly done and visible within the stated vote.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not use double octothorpes your vote will not be counted, for reasons of fairness but also because it is unlikely the GM will see your vote using the CTRL+F feature and this rule thus prevents vote miscounts.

The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to activate the hammer mechanic. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before the word end. (EX: ##END). The day will end as soon as a majority of the players are voting ##End. Once the majority of players have voted END then the player with the most votes will be hammered and lynched. Players who have not voted and if the day has ended then they will not be penalized or subject to any penalties. An example of this situation is provided below:

Example
ND (7): Players 1-7
Brainbomb (5): Players 8-12
Ghug (10): Players 13-23
A majority of players (12/23) have voted END!
Ghug has been lynched!

The third level of voting refers to Mafia members choosing their NK (nightkill) targets during Night phases. The mafia members will use their separate QuickTopic thread to discuss this. Please make your votes in bold, like so: kill ND (< b > kill ND < / b >).

All Mafia members may cast a vote, but the Item Thief does not carry out the NK unless the Item Thief is the last remaining Mafia member. In that situation, the Item Thief will lose their thief power and essentially become a Goon. The thief, as the last mafia member, would not be able to carry out the item thief PR role and the mafia kill as these two operations happen separately within the order of operations hence the reason for the downgrade.

If alive the Evil Elder will always carry out the Mafia NK even if the elder does not vote or votes for a different player. If the Evil Elder dies then one of the Mafia Goons will carry out the NK. This is decided based on votes. The Mafia Goon who votes first on the player that receives the most mafia NK votes will carry out the kill in this situation. If there is a tie then the Mafia Goon who votes last will decide the kill, but the first Mafia Goon to vote for that player makes the kill. The Item Thief, if alive, could also break the tie, but will not carry out the kill. If the Item Thief votes first to NK they will not carry out the kill, the next goon to vote for that player will carry out the kill, or if the Elder is still alive then the Elder will carry out the kill.

ROLE ACTIONS
If your role has a special action (eg. Roleblocking, investigating, shooting a gun etc) then you may PM your action to both GM’s. Day actions such as dayvig shots will be processed as soon as possible by the first GM to read this. Day actions must be PMed within ten minutes of the end of phase though to be processed. Night actions will be processed at the end of the night and can be changed up to that point. Mafia night actions can be voted on or selected in the Mafia QuickTopic thread.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
SPAM
Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not mod-killed by rule in this game. The in-game voting mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the “VOTING” section above for more information. Suffice to say that spamming is not worth anyone’s time in this setup, and will be frowned upon, so while you may not be lynched or mod-killed for spamming, please refrain from doing so.

PLAYER SILENCES:
Players that have other participants on their mute list are asked to remove them for the duration of this game. Disputes stemming from outside of this game should not carry over into the gameplay. If they do, the GM reserves the right to address these issues and potentially remove or sanction players if it becomes a disruption.

FORUM SILENCES:
If a player is silenced on the forum by the moderator/admin team, an alternate will take their place for the duration of their silence. The silenced player will then have the option to take their position back over or leave it in the hands of the alternate. As long as the silence does not stem from actions involving the mafia thread, there will be no in-game sanctions for a forum silence.

REPLACEMENTS
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced at the GM's discretion. Individuals wishing to serve as potential replacements must NOT join the out-of-game God QT. (Being in the Observer QT is acceptable). Replacement is not guaranteed. The GM will always attempt to replace so a replacement player is not alignment indicative.

TURN DURATION
This game’s Day phases will last 48 hours and Night phases will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g., hammer). Extensions may be granted at a moderator’s discretion, but don’t count on it. Phase shifts will be at 11PM GMT, 6PM EST.

GM TEAM
This game’s GMs are ND (userID=68782) and brainbomb (userID=41025) PM any of us with any questions or concerns and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. We are delighted to help.

JEBEDIAH’S WRATH

*In an old farmhouse, the front door creaks open slowly as Herschberg enters to find Soltzfuss in a worn rocker chair smoking a cigar*

Solztfuss: Herschberg, does the Spring rain remind you of brighter days?

Herschberg: *sitting* Aye.

Soltzfuss: The barber who cut my hair told me a funny thing. I made mention of how city dwellers use elevators; and how bizarre they were.
He told me a story about an Amish man and his young son made a visit into town, who happened upon one of these devices. They observed people entering and exiting spell bound by it. Once the crowd had cleared, an older lady approached the elevator and disappeared inside. Moments later the lights blinked again, and the door opened.
A much younger woman stepped out.
The Amish man turned to his son and said, "Let's go home at once and bring your Mamm back here."

Herschberg: Oh god, Abby hates jokes like that.

Soltzfuss: what news? *Pours him a glass*

Herschberg: Hard to believe it’s been 9 months’ boss. *sipping brandy*

Soltzfuss: The problem with a little sin is that it usually grows into a big one.
Wait...9 months? Is Abigail with child?

Herschberg: *sitting* No, I just mean how we won. Remember?

Soltzfuss: Won? What did we win? A town of lazy fools and little self motivation.

Herschberg: What would people have said outside in the modern world all around us? Like if they had one of those newspaper reporters here?

Soltzfuss: Can you imagine the headlines? “Lapp lay face down on the ground, beaten and battered by the other four remaining villager’s members. Eli stepped forward, ready to deliver the final blow.

"No... Please, no..." he said, fully expecting them to be his last words.”

Herschberg: That sounds like some pretty terrible writing?

Soltzfuss: Well it is, I’m drunk give me a break.

Herschberg: If only we could stuff this whole town in an elevator and see if braver souls emerge.
Realistically though, it would have been more like: “Suddenly, a cry rang out over him, and Lapp fell to the floor beside him. He heard another voice shout before another body fell to the ground. It took all of his remaining strength, but Lapp managed to turn and look up. What he saw confirmed his suspicions. Solztfuss, the ITEM THIEF, and Herschberg, the MAFIOSO, stood over the corpses of Lapp, the ORACLE, and Amos, the Villager.”

Soltzfuss: Sounds like a script from a bad mafia game. *puffs his cigar letting out a cloud of smoke*

Herschberg: It basically was, I still can't believe that guy tried to get mercy from us by saying he was a cop from Greene County.

Soltzfuss: Worse than failure is the failure to try.

Herschberg: “Without a word, they nodded to one another and Soltzfuss started striding towards Lapp. Mercifully, Lapp slipped into unconsciousness before Soltzfuss reached him.”

Soltzfuss: See now you are just stealing my glory. You were supposed to let me kill him in the story with a boot to the skull like it really happened. Guns are so tedious, Poison is a coward’s weapon, and who the hell would have ever envisioned someone dying from a pitchfork?

Herschberg: Yea… boss, about that.. listen.

Soltzfuss: No no, I understand why the locals were annoyed I seized them all don’t get me wrong. It’s just ever since-

Herschberg: I have been meaning to tell you something.

Solzfuss: That doesn’t sound like something I want to hear…

Hesrchberg: The shed where you keep all the confiscated shit, the contraband, the walkie talkies, laptops, guns, pitchforks, creepy shit we found in Jebediah’s old house—long story short… Someone...raided it.

Soltzfuss: You gotta be kidding me!? When the fuck did this happen?

Herschberg: I wish I was kidding boss – must have been sometime in the last few days. I noticed this afternoon when Stutzman was out fixing the wagon.

Solztfuss: *Standing* Rally the boys, find out who has what, find out who the hell stole my shit. Go house to house and round up everyone.

Welcome to Mafia 28 Jebediah’s Wrath!

DAY ONE HAS BEGUN YOU MAY POST!!!

It has been a long wait with much abate and controversy, ladies and gentlemen, but here we are once again.

I very much look forward to another excellent game.

Should I read the first game? I knew this was a sequel, but that flavor beginning makes me feel left out.
Maniac (189 D(B))
26 Mar 17 UTC
OK PM read and understood.

Let's get this party started...

welcome new players and good luck, you've picked a game that is likely to be intense. No1 rule is don't roleclaim too early if you are a PR If you think time is right, it probably isn't. Always think twice, once exposed there are no backsies.
Maniac (189 D(B))
26 Mar 17 UTC
@dargorygel - i seldom read flavour and always skip the flavour in the reveals. I think in this game they'll be more than enough to read.
snowy801 (591 D)
26 Mar 17 UTC
Who are the new players in this game?
Balduran (119 D)
26 Mar 17 UTC
I haven't seen stupidfighter, curupira, or Oztra in a game before....
snowy801 (591 D)
26 Mar 17 UTC
It is very possible those people have played mafia here before, and it is we who fail to recognize them.
stupidfighter (253 D)
26 Mar 17 UTC
I'm a returning player after a long absence.
stupidfighter (253 D)

Like a year and a half or so.

@maniac I usually read the flavor of the reveals, and often enjoy it. But I will take your counsel and not read the earlier game. I, too, think we will have a lot to think through and figure out this game.
Maniac (189 D(B))
26 Mar 17 UTC
Stupidfighter has played before as and I recall was MVP other two you mention (balduran) I haven't played with.

@dargorygel - i wouldn't take council from someone like me unless I was trying to buddy someone like me. @All - I think we have our first scum, hook, line and and sinker. ##votedalgorygel

This was the one I was supposed to sit out. Then I got coerced into signing up as a sub. And then I got subbed in from the start. It seems as though the Mafia Gods wanted me to play.

Looking forward to this madness.
curupira (3441 D)

Hi, people. First time playing.
Still reading the rules and introduction ...
snowy801 (591 D)
27 Mar 17 UTC
Welcome, welcome. Thanks for subbing Tom.

Superficially, the set up looks extremely complex, with no shortage of minutae to memorize as to how different roles and items work. But as brainbomb told me a few days prior - and I agree - that once the items are dropped this is just another vanilla game, with a third party ghost. Please try not to worry overmuch about all the distractions and play your regular game lest you be mistaken as having a secondary agenda. I know I have a history of targeting such players, at least.

That being said, it is probably best not to talk about any specifics about item and role usage. You should just try to figure these things out on your own. A number of useful questions were asked near the end of the sign up thread here starting around page 6 here: http://webdiplomacy.net/forum.php?threadID=1460042&page-thread=6#threadPager, and perhaps the GMs would be willing to clarify certain mechanics if you PM them.

I also thought that to "take counsel" regarding whether to read flavor text (surely a decision darg can come to on his own, wise as he has become in his long years) was somewhat strange, but the more noticeable behavior is Maniac's own. Aggressive and precocious: to be different from M27 is no black mark against him, considering his role, but I invite commentary on this regard.

As usual, I hope to lynch among the noncontributors on this first day. Last game illustrates well my point that if you're prolific and scummy now, you will continue to be so later - goldfinger was marked as mafia on day 1 and hanged day 2 - and yet the dearth of information from the lurkers - HR, xorxes, ND, etc. all went undiscovered until much later in the game. As such, I hope to encourage a policy of choosing our first target from among the less talkative players.

Oztra and curupica, have you played the game elsewhere from this forum? If so, could you speak regarding your experience?

Hey snowy can you give us a tldr for each post, thanks

As an aside, that brainbomb isn't playing doesn't mean this game need be a silent graveyard. Any information is good information, as much as people last game protested brainbomb's commentary as being too chaotic (no doubt in part a conspiracy to mislynch him) and if you have any thoughts at all, please share them.

Like right now, I'm wondering why DO who I also know to be quite chatty has not moved to fill the alleged gap brainbomb has left. I'm also half-seriously wondering whether chaqa (and everyone else) read their role PM this time. You definitely should, if you had any brilliant ideas to the contrary.

I shall endeavor to keep my messages concise. But I'm afraid I'm a rather verbose person by nature. Love the sound of my own voice and all that, even if it's just in my head.

I'm coming back from a debate tournament. Also this is a really different vibe than that discord game. I thought this game was starting on a Monday tbh
Look Words. And more words. Surprisingly little joke posting too. Though given last game this quote by Maniac is
"Welcome new players and good luck, you've picked a game that is likely to be intense. No1 rule is don't roleclaim too early if you are a PR If you think time is right, it probably isn't. Always think twice, once exposed there are no backsies."

Anyway, my strategy last game worked well enough. So back to not posting while people initially suspect me until I eventually clear myself by a critical vote to lynch a member of the mafia/the ghost.

Three Build England, possiblility and effect on game play.
As far as I know, there is only 1 set of moves that gives England 3 1901 builds, what if in a real game, England, Germany, Russia, and France must complete those moves, what will be the diplomatic effect in game?

So guys, as some of you know I can be a bit of a troll on the forums. This also tends to mean I'm a bit of a troll on other internet platforms that aren't webdip. One of them being tinder. This time I thought it would be hilarious to make this my bio and see what happens: http://imgur.com/tW86lIi

I was wondering if personality traits can make it harder for someone to ever get good at this game. I consider myself pretty average if not mediocre at diplomacy for a number of reasons.

Diplomacy: Is Germany Too Weak?
I noticed that Germany is considerably weaker in Diplomacy than it's historical counterpart. In game, Germany can very easily be knocked out by England and France. However, historically Germany was able to fight competently on three separate fronts. Does anybody feel that Germany is a little misrepresented in game?

Coup in North Korea
I was trying to think why Trump would engage in such brinksmanship with North Korea. Sure, it could be just more inexperience, etc, but then I was thinking that maybe the goal is to scare the generals there so much that someone bumps off the Great Leader. Then I started thinking, that's probably why he rubbed out his half-brother recently.
