As long as the Republicans in Congress back Trump, he can say/do whatever he wants, the sky's the limit. I believe McConnell/Ryan's implicit threat of impeachment (for any number of reasons) will keep Trump loyal to their agenda.

I don't see what's wrong with ND's argument. Knowing that the precedent for preemptive pardons already exists (thanks Nixon...), if you were going to prosecute a prominent Democratic Party member with deep ties to the current President, wouldn't you be quiet about it for two months to avoid the possibility of being shut down before you could start?

He has two reasons to act differently:
- He's actually done or tried to do several other things with his presidency besides pardon a criminal. He has some popular goodwill and a legacy already established. Ford was in office for two years and his most notable act was a pardon. Obama would be remembered much more like Bill Clinton was for a last-second pardon.
- Obama was undoubtedly aware of the email server since Clinton conducted official business on the server using an email address besides her .gov one. It is quite possible that, should anything come from a potential investigation, he might at least be involved inasfar as knowing something under-the-table was going on and not acting on it.

I will worry about this if nothing is done by the start of February. Right now I think what ND said is the right of it. Why does it need to happen right now, conveniently when Clinton's most powerful political ally can shut it all down in an instant if he so chooses?

It sounds like your argument is that he's blatantly lying about his intentions to thwart the current President's ability to use a power granted to him by the Constitution. Maybe, but it seems more likely to me that he made a promise he knew he had no intention of keeping because it would play well with voters.

If I make this post again in February and he still isn't fulfilling this promise, will you care?
