Before I begin the discussion that must inevitably stem from this thread, I'd like to make a couple things clear.
First, I completely see where you're coming from. Looking at the issue of same-sex marriage on the surface, it seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to allow. After all, if two people love each other, who am I to say whether they can get married or not? Anyone who has an issue with same-sex marriage must just be a hateful bigot who can't get over their own prejudice, right? Well, maybe not. You see, as it is with many things in life, there's more to this issue than it may initially meet the eye. One must consider the long term effects that same-sex marriage could have on society before letting their emotions draw a hasty conclusion for them. But I'll come back to that later. Right now this is just an introductory post to make a couple things clear before I begin.
The next thing I want to make clear is that religion stays out of this. Seeing as I'm arguing against gay marriage, you can probably make a safe assumption what my religious beliefs are. I do believe that my religion is credible; and if I were addressing an audience which shared my views, I would have no problem convincing them that our religion was against same-sex marriage. However, because I don't know what your beliefs are, I can't assume that you agree with me. Because of this, I can't use my religion in my arguments unless I establish it as credible first; which would be a completely different discussion. This does prove to be a substantial setback for me, (admittedly a lot of my reasoning on this issue does stem from my religion) but I'm willing to discuss same-sex marriage in a purely secular sense.
And last of all, I'd like to apologize in advance for the delays between my postings. I'm a busy guy. Most of the time I don't have access to a real computer and so I'm forced to use my mobile. I'll try to respond to this thread as quickly as possible, but I can't make any promises. Oh and I apologize for any grammer/spelling errors. Probably not going to be the best writing I've ever done. Gotta love that autocorrect!
