It's a tough spot, but it might be possible to make something of it:

So who is going to recap what rules we agreed on, etc, for me, since it's hard to tell what is official by reading a thread
Signups CLOSED, we'll be working with 18 players.

Phases are 48 hours for days and 24 hours for nights. Night talking in the thread is allowed.

I'll recap in full in a bit
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Apr 14 UTC
May I suggest 24 and 24? Three days per phase seems rather long.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Apr 14 UTC
Or maybe 36 and 12?
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
02 Apr 14 UTC
36 and 12 could work, I think you need more than 24 hours for the day debates.
TheJok3r (765 D)
02 Apr 14 UTC
Abge, you'll find that 24 hours per day phase isn't really long enough to get productive conversation. 48 is actually perfect for day phase.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Apr 14 UTC
Yeah I think you're right about day. I was more concerned about losing momentum waiting 24 hours for night.
Essentially what Jok3r said, hopefully momentum won't be too much of an issue -- the real killer in most of these games is the pause for the night phase, but allowing talk on the thread during the night should solve that issue.

Additionally there will be a mechanism to end a particular day early if the players as a whole feel it's time to move on. (more on that in a bit)
Okay, quick-and-dirty version of the rules. Explanations for each rule and miscellaneous notes about other possible concerns are included in the main post to come in about an hour.

RULES

0. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his discretion.
1. All players must vote at least once per game day.
2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.
3. All players are forbidden from using encryption.
4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing.
5. All players are forbidden from deleting previous posts of theirs.
6. All spectators and players who have been eliminated are forbidden from posting on all comment threads related to the game notes.
7. All players are forbidden from cheating.
8. All players are required to play to win.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

VOTING
There are two levels of voting in this game. The first level of voting is for whom you intend to lynch. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before your intended vote target. (EX: ##VOTE Eden) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as I can understand who you're referencing you're good. If you don't use double octothorpes then I won't see it when I ctrl+f through the thread and your vote may not be counted.

The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to end the day as soon as a majority is reached (called a “quick hammer” or simply “hammer”). Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before the word end. (EX: ##END) The game will switch to the hammer mechanic for the duration of that day once a majority of players choose to do so.

If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day.

REPLACEMENTS
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced with another person if the need arises before the end of the first day. Individuals wishing to serve as replacements must NOT join the out-of-game spectator chat. Replacement is not guaranteed, and after the first day no replacement requests will be accepted for balance purposes.

TURN DURATION
This game’s days will last 48 hours and nights will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g. hammer). Extensions may be granted at a moderator’s discretion, but don’t count on it.
Full post in new thread will go up in a half-hour. I made a couple of tweaks to the format and this is the final format I've decided on:

18 players:

13 town:
10 vanilla town
1 cop
1 doc
1 vigilante (2 shots)

4 mafia:
4 goons
1 factional kill
1 factional roleblock

1 third party:
1 serial killer (nightkill OR investigation immunity)
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Apr 14 UTC
Is there a difference between what the serial killer and the vigilante do to people and what the mafia goons do?

in this game we are saying "banning" means what is normally called "killing" or "lynching" in regular mafia, right?
ya, "banning" is just the flavor way of saying "killing," "lynching," etc. etc.

in terms of any data town players would receive, a vigilante, mafia, and serial killer's kills are all identical and are resolved simultaneously
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Apr 14 UTC
and i dont understand the hammer thing is it like if everybody has voted, then the phase advances, if that's true then how can you miss the vote and the hammer still happens, isn't that impossible
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Apr 14 UTC
okay so they are the same power - killing/banning. thats what i wasnt sure of
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Apr 14 UTC
and how are you going to prevent spectators from commenting on the thread - cause you know those fuckers are gon do it, if they havent already
The hammer vote is separate from the lynch vote

Say there are 5 players left: you, me, kestas, jmo, and abgemacht. you, abgemacht, and I all vote for kestas, kestas and jmo haven't voted or posted in the thread yet. If we also all 3 vote ##END, then because we have both a majority vote on kestas (3/5) and a majority vote to end the turn (3/5), the turn ends immediately. kestas is lynched, jmo isn't punished for failing to vote before the turn ended because the turn ended early.

In practice, you probably shouldn't be using this unless you've caught a mafia 100% or someone is spamming the thread to hell just to be an asshole, but it's there for oddball scenarios where the town actually benefits from cutting off discussion for the day early.
realistically I can't *guarantee* they don't post on the thread b/c we have no deletion powers :( but I'm going to create a separate QuickTopic thread to discuss the game in outside of the game. If people are just trolling the thread then I'm sure I can work something out to handle it, in the same vein as the "backseat driver Diplomacy" thread.

wats quicktopic
it's a website that generates really barebones threads for people to discuss things in -- all threads are virtually untraceable through search engines (afaik) so they're effectively like PMs on this site, but a little more wieldy

oh cool. has the game started yet i want to start accusing
you got 50 more mins feel free to shitpost in-thread until then

(and I guess even after then but I don't advise it)

dont we get to know whether the serial killer decides to be undetectable or... the other thing? or are we told that on the second game-day?

Mods are Dirty So-N-So's
That's right folks, it's another "Dirty So-n-So" game...step right this way. This time we make war in honor of, and in light of, the Mod Team.

Step up if you're man enough...and we need at least two Mods two (in order to mock them). Modern Dip II, WTA, NON-Anon, no-holds-barred negotiations, 36 Hr, blah blah blah.

Is there a feature for the use and creation of games for a classroom?
I am a teacher that wants to use this web game for a simulation for my different classes. Is there a method to create a game for my different classes, or would I have to have several users to join and create different games. Let me know so that I can plan ahead to implement this in my classroom. Thank you.
