JFK Assassination Poll
Which is more likely?

1) Out of the blue, a devoted communist decides to assassinate a president of the United States who is widely reputed to be soft on communism. The presidential motorcade is re-routed at the last minute to take the president right by the building where the alleged assassin works. Despite being rated a poor marksmen when he was in the Marine Corps, the alleged assassin gets off three shots in six seconds with a bolt-action rifle and manages to kill the president and seriously wound another passenger in the car even though there was a big tree in the line of fire. The alleged assassin makes a clean getaway, but decides later to get into an argument with and then kill a random police officer. After being caught and arrested shortly after the policeman's murder, the alleged assassin publicly protests that he is "just a patsy" and is himself assassinated two days later at a police station while surrounded by cops by a shady mobster who says he acted as a demonstration of Jewish empowerment.

2) all the way.

The CIA did it, acting on orders from the Federal Reserve. VP Johnson was in on it too. The shooters were on the grassy knoll and they were most likely CIA operatives.

You've obviously never fired a bolt-action rifle. It takes a lot to work the bolt. No way an amateur like Oswald could get three EXTREMELY ACCURATE shots off in 20 seconds, much less 11.

You have to willfully ignore so much evidence to think anyone but Oswald killed Kennedy.

In fact, you have to ignore so much to believe that there's evidence of a conspiracy. All the supposedly slam-dunk questions conspiracy theorists ask have been effectively answered in a non-sexy way that conforms to Oswald acting alone. Now, that doesn't necessarily disprove a Grand Conspiracy along the lines of the movie JFK, but it makes believing in one a function of faith rather than the result of honestly looking at the evidence.

But this is Tolstoy, so what else should we expect?
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
19 Nov 13 UTC
@ Octavious

Okay, maybe calling him an amateur was a little harsh, but come on. There are only a handful of people in the world that could have made those shots, especially with a 23-year-old Italian bolt-action rifle with an improperly sighted scope.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

I wouldn't expect anything less from Tolstoy and Gunfighter; after all, neither of them believe we landed on the moon, so logic isn't an issue here. The more interesting part, to me, is that Gunfighter buys into the grassy knoll conspiracy theory even though he's obviously well aware of guns and ballistics.
Invictus (240 D)

Gunfighter06, is all your information just coming from Full Metal Jacket? Tests have been done which show it really wasn't too hard of a shot, and anyway, all the forensic evidence shows that the shots came from the window where Oswald certainly was.

This is all a perfect example of what is often the case with conspiracy theorists. They don't really want to expose the truth. They get married to the idea that they're privy to some secret knowledge and any facts to the contrary, no matter how extensive and convincing to honest observers, can just go to hell.
Tolstoy (1962 D)

@Gunfighter: My video was of a guy getting 3 rounds off in 3.45 seconds, now he didn't have to aim or anything, which made it easier, but my point is he had more then enough time to do it.

I do think that, if any conspiracy theory turned out to be true, it would be the JFK one. The balance of the evidence points against it, though.

Anyway they have the window set up to look exactly like it did on that day. And it’s really accurate, you know. ’Cause Oswald’s not in it.

Yeah, yeah, so wow, that’s cool. Painstaking accuracy, you know. It’s true. It’s called the ‘Sniper’s Nest’. It’s glassed in, it’s got the boxes sitting there.

You can’t actually get to the window as such but the reason they did that, of course, they didn’t want thousands of American tourists getting there each year going “No fucking way! I can’t even see the road. Fuck, they’re lying to us! Fuck! Where are they? There’s no fuckin way!”

Not unless Oswald was hanging by his toes, upside down from the ledge. Either that or some pigeons grabbed onto him, flew him over the motorcade … Surely someone would have seen that. You know, there was rumours of anti–Castro pigeons seen drinking in bars … Someone overhead them saying: “coup, coup, coup.”
Tolstoy (1962 D)
19 Nov 13 UTC
I think the fact that believers in the Warren Commission story took a straightforward retelling of the official explanation (well, one of them, anyway - the House Select Committee on assassinations found that there was probably a conspiracy; I guess they were all crazy, too) as a prima facie attack on "logic" and "the evidence" says a lot more about the official explanation than it does about 'krazy konspiracy kooks'.

"@Gunfighter: My video was of a guy getting 3 rounds off in 3.45 seconds, now he didn't have to aim or anything, which made it easier, but my point is he had more then enough time to do it."

He also didn't have to deal with recoil, because he wasn't actually firing the gun. Which is more like apples and basketballs than apples and oranges.

^ I note with amusement that none of the talking heads in this clip bring up the alleged trajectory in their snazzy 3 D display of the second ("magic") bullet going through the elm tree (see 3:39).
Fasces349 (0 DX)
19 Nov 13 UTC
That is a valid point.

The tree being in the way is the only valid point the conspiracy nuts have.
Invictus (240 D)
20 Nov 13 UTC
If you look at the 3-D recreation in another video it clearly goes over the tree. And anyway, it's not as if one can expect the recreation to perfectly reproduce the placement of each little branch 45 years after the fact (I think the 3-D thing's like of old, I remember seeing it on the History Channel when they still showed history shows).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfSXkfV_mhA

The tree thing is hardly a valid point against the single-bullet position. Everyone agrees that the bullets before the head shot that definitively killed the president came from the depository. It's only that last shot that has controversy about its origin. Making a stink about some problem with the computer-generated tree is just Tolstoy continuing to clutch at straws and betrays that he really doesn't know what he's talking about. As I said, he, like most conspiracy theorists, are committed to the idea that there is a nefarious plot at work and then work backwards to make the evidence fit their claim.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
20 Nov 13 UTC
I disagree with you invictus.

The magic bullet theory was regarding the second bullet. They argue that it couldn't have come from Oswald because of the angles it hit the president and Connelly. Now their belief that it couldn't have come from Oswald due to angles is crap as both of us have provided video evidence for.
However their other argument regarding the 2nd bullet not coming from Oswald is that Oswald couldn't see the President because a tree was blocking the line of sight.

Tolstoy even says as much in his intro "even though there was a big tree in the line of fire."

The fact of the matter is, that second shot was fired right after the car emerged from behind the tree, and its very possible that Oswald didn't have a clear line of fire when he made that alleged second shot.

I agree with you that Oswald probably fired the shot, I'm just saying the only credibly argument the conspiracy nuts have is that Oswald couldn't have successfully shot the president with that 2nd bullet because the tree was in the way.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
20 Nov 13 UTC
@ 2WL

For the record, I am a firm believer in the Moon landings. We were there. The faked landing conspiracy is complete bullshit.

@ Fasces

"My video was of a guy getting 3 rounds off in 3.45 seconds, now he didn't have to aim or anything, which made it easier, but my point is he had more then enough time to do it."

Anyone can squeeze off three rounds in less than four seconds with a bolt-action that they are comfortable with, but that's like comparing wildly throwing 3 basketballs in 4 seconds to making 3 full-court shots in 7 seconds.
Invictus (240 D)
20 Nov 13 UTC
The magic bullet theory says that the first two shots both hit, the mainstream story says the first one missed and the second one hit them both. Both shots indisputably come from the depository. It's pretty clear the third one did too, but the conspiracy argument is that it came from the grassy knoll.

The tree idea as a claim that someone besides Oswald made either of the first two shots is nonsense. Both indisputably came from the depository window. The "magic bullet" people don't argue for another shooter in another building. They argue that both of the guy in the depository's shots hit rather than just the one, and that the second shooter on the knoll fired the fatal one. The tree issue is an argument against that second shot hitting both men, not that the second shot was impossible to make.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
20 Nov 13 UTC
No invictus, according to the JFK movie, the first shot was a miss, and we know this because a fragment his someone else.

The second and third shots were made within a second of each other, one hit Kennedy and one hit Connelly.

4th and 5th shots then hit Kennedy in the head.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
20 Nov 13 UTC
Also there were 3 shooters, one where Oswald actually was (that wasn't him), one behind the fence and one in another building.

Again I'm assuming that the JFK movie is accurate according to conspiracy theorists.

How does the mute option work in this scenario:
If I mute a player, will it in turn mute any threads he/she may create in the future?

I mute everything in the forum except for game-related or threads (I'm here for the game, not for...that). It takes a chunk of time each day to do that. If I were to mute users rather than threads, would it save me from having to mute any threads they may create in the future?
