Was life better under Labour or Tories?
To be honest I find it difficult to decide between life under Blair or life under Cameron. I have been more prosperous under Cameron but that's due to my own career, and I do remember Blair's regime being a bit intrusive, but maybe that's just false memory.

Portrait of a CEO
Found this profile in LinkedIN and wanted to share - there are *so* many of you that operate under this delusion that CEO's sit on their asses sucking down caviar and drinking campaign while figuring out ways to stick it to the little guy. If you've ever known one, or know the child of a CEO, you know a guy that is never home, always on the go. THIS guy in this profile is invovled in about 20 different companies...helping other people make it int he world. Yeah...what a bastard!

Capture Your Capital
I once saw someone refer to a modern map game whereby everyone was given a target on the other side of the map that they had to get to and hold. Does anyone know how this was set up (e.g. which did each country have to aim for?) and would anyone be interested in trying to set a game of it up?

Does anyone work in Wall Street?
I started a stock market simulator and am really getting into it. I'd like to learn a lot more to be able to trade some of my own funds once I'm more comfortable. Any recommended reading for someone looking to learn more about investing, chart reading, etc.? There is so much out there I can't tell what is garbage being sold and what is good.

The JSF
Could someone explain the concept and justification of the JSF for me? I've kinda always viewed the whole program as the epitome of military waste, because (as far as I know, please enlighten me) is seems like the Pentagon is replacing perfectly effective planes (the A-10, F22, F18), all specifically suited to their niche with ultra-expensive planes that do the jobs of all models stated above, only at a more generalized and mediocre level.

Tea partiers above average at science
For a fun, completely statistically insignificant, easy-to-misinterpret, and unprocessed statistical datum, see this post by a Yale Law professor on his surprise at finding that being in the tea party correlates positively with scientific knowledge. Should be good for some fun discussion.

Thy closing ¶:
"Next time I collect data, too, I won't be surprised at all if the correlations between science comprehension and political ideology or identification with the Tea Party movement disappear or flip their signs.  These effects are trivially small, & if I sample 2000+ people it's pretty likely any discrepancy I see will be 'statistically significant'--which has precious little to do with 'practically significant.'"

Oh I wish I saw that closing in 'political science' papers.

Reviewer 1:
It's not a fair comparison. To be able to have religious views, a person needs to be able to have views at all. This is not given to all human beings. A new test asking people if they have an opinion on religion and if so, whether it translates into tea-partying or other misbehavior should reveal more interesting results.

Jamiet99uk (808 D)

Not really. Here in the UK our Parliament is still controlled by the landed gentry, and they represent far less than 1% of the population.

while the correlation is tiny and inside the margin of error, I don't think you can continue to argue that the tea party is full of idiot rednecks out to destroy this country with their stupidity.

I find this rather surprising since the teabaggers who have gone up for election in recent years have shown an amazing lack of comprehension in science...see Todd Akin in Mo for one example. Either they are not truly representative of the tea party or the study was as properly conducted as the one that said all you have to do to get out of the recession is cut spending...that was later found to have held back evidence that proved otherwise.

Plus...I did not think that a lot of right wing religious fundies (who also call themselves teabaggers) believed in actual science...I mean man did roam the earth with dinosaurs after all...

That should be enough poking of the hornets nest. Let the real fun begin!!!

BengalGrl - Of course you find it suprising, since you are, no doubt, yet another low-educated Liberal who's total opinion is formed by your sheep-like following of CNN, MSNBC, and other Democrat-talking-point outlets....just as this Professor admitted.

Since you are the typical uninformed follower, it is no surprise that you haven't a clue...

THAT is the point...
krellin (80 DX)

Fro example....upon what actual evidence do you draw *this* moronic conclusion:

"Plus...I did not think that a lot of right wing religious fundies (who also call themselves teabaggers) believed in actual science"

OK...Serious question to all you Liberal lapdogs bashing Tea Partiers: How many of you **actually** know, and have talked, to a Tea Party member. Let's see if you are as stupid and ill-informed as this Professor admits he was...walking around forming and expresing opinions on something for which he had *zero* knowledge.

Let's see if any of you have enough intellectual integrity to admit your total knowledge of the Tea Party is based upon Jon Stewart, comedians and Democrat talking points in the news.

Politicians on the whole don't get science. To them subjects like AGW and evolution are political keywords and they wouldn't have the first idea with particle collided was for or even how a jet engine differs from a piston engine.

Krellin...I have a BA in Education and History and am not too far from a masters. And I cannot think of when I last watched/read CNN, MSNBC or any liberal rag. My opinions are formed from reading more main stream media (and no...Fox is not mainstream) and doing research on topics that I find interesting. I also do read the dissenting opinions from outlets like Fox and Breitbart and such just to make sure that my opinion is based on fact and and seeing all sides of an issue.

Now...you my friend clearly are the sheep...and I am guessing of the Sean Hannity variety...because all you do is spout off Faux Newz and right wing rag commentary with little if any fact behind it (just like most right wing newz outlets)...to say nothing of the fact that I am guessing your education is something less than that of a third grader.
BengalGrrl (146 D)
18 Oct 13 UTC
Krellin...my aunt and her hubby, as well as an uncle and his wife on my father's side as well as most of my mother's side of the family living in GA are all self proclaimed teabaggers. It makes for some fun family gatherings...

Plus I do count several teabaggers as friends here in Seattle (yes...there are righties in the leftie town). So yes, I talk to the other side and hear their points of view and debate with them...and normally without the name calling.
Draugnar (0 DX)

And to side with Krellin... Tea party member =/= religious fundamentalist. There may be fundamentalists in the Tea party, but there are a number in the Democratic party as well. And there are Tea party members who are atheists. Political philosophy does not equate to religious philosophy on a one to one basis.

Anecdotal evidence aside from GA inbred mouth breathers, I noticed you only read the dissenting opinions on Fox and not the dissenting opinions on the liberal rags. Way to be non-partisan </sarcasm>
krellin (80 DX)
18 Oct 13 UTC
Benga - "main stream media" and "Fox is not main stream media"....so, as i stated above, you indulge yourself purely is CNN etc...you don't watch it, you read it, and you isolate yourself to liberal-leaning media sources. Thanks for verifying that. Fox news isn't main stream, but it *crushes* the competition in ratings across the board...

An *educated* person actually refers to multiple media sources of varying opinions in order to get a well-rounded view and form their own opinion. You do not, this is clear.

You also fall back on the typical Liberal attack line...accusing me of being a Sean Hannity fan. I don't have cable...cut it a few years ago, darling...and if you stick around this site for a while, you will note that I post information from source all over the place...NPR graces my dial as much as any other media source...so you are sadly mistaken. But such is typical of the lapdog left - you are fulfilling my expectation *perfectly*.

As fro my education, deary, I'm a degreed Electrical Engineer who went through honor's English courses in college...so I'll put my education against your any time, no problem.

The high irony of your post is that you claim to have "Tea Bagger" friends, and yet you don't call people names. Classic moron move...thanks for playin' Babe.

You also state that you have no science background yourself..."Education and History"....As we all know" "Those that can, work. Those that can't Teach"

....OK, got it...I'm figuring out who you are pretty quickly...
krellin (80 DX)
18 Oct 13 UTC
Oh...as for your dissenting opinions on Fox...name some columnists/authors you have read...let's check your credibility...
krellin (80 DX)
18 Oct 13 UTC
Better yet - state their arguments, if you have indeed read them. Let's see if you can clearly articulate a "dissenting" opinion.
BengalGrrl (146 D)
18 Oct 13 UTC
Draugnar, I say dissenting opinions on Fox because my opinion tends to skew left on most issues so Fox is a dissenting opinion to me. When I read something liberal it is usually just preaching to the choir...which is why I seek out different opinions...even if I may not agree with them.

And religion & the tea party seem to go hand in hand as one of the more common statements you hear from them on non fiscal issues is that this is a "Christian" nation. That implies that they want to see their religious based views as the basis for running (or ruining) the country.
krellin (80 DX)
18 Oct 13 UTC
BengalGurl.....Uhhhh....please tell where Religion was an issue in ANY discussion with the Tea Party in the last 3 weeks? Hell, tell me where religion has been an issue brought up by the Tea Party in any discussion *period* over the last few years?

For the overwhelming part, the Tea Party is focused on *fiscal* issues, not religion, darling...so your typical knee-jerk left-wing "They're religious zealots" argument is laughable...and a clear indications that, as expected, your opinion of the Tea Party is formed by the left-wing media, and not by actual knowledge either of Te Party members, or of Tea Party information sources.

Thanks for playing - thanks for the clear demonstration of what a typical uninformed Liberal looks like.

NFL Pick 'em: Week 7--Peyton's Homecoming, Rex's Boasting, and Monday's Debacle
We kick off Week 7 of the season tonight with a contest Obi hates--Seahawks and Cardinals, Hate vs. Hate. The unbeaten Broncos travel to Indy as Peyton "comes home" to take on his former team, the Colts. Rex Ryan has his swagger (and mouth) back and says he thinks Jets/Pats this week can be like the Jets won against the Pats...years ago...and Giants/Vikes in a MNF disaster of scheduling. So, that and more, Week 7--PICK 'EM!
