Phase Lengths
So there are a bunch of game phase lengths in the range from 30 minutes to 4 hours. Why would anyone ever want to play a game that made them wake up every hour for (potentially) weeks? Has anyone ever used those phase lengths?

Words that are easy to say but hard to live by
I think we all have principles that we believe in that we have trouble following. Here's one of mine--These words from Paul's letter to the Christians in Philippi are close to 2000 years old and still carry tremendous meaning: Philippians 4:6-7. What are yours?

Should We Feel bad for Refusing to Draw Out for 10 years?
gameID=111449 I bought in high, and flubbed a solo run. Once stalemate lines were drawn, I just couldn't live with Germany getting a piece of the draw. However, though I retreated in 1913, England England refused to execute him... I understand loyalty, but I refused to end the game. Germany CD'ed in 1925 making both of our stands on principle moot.

Yes :), the rule is 2 years of no progress and the game ends in a draw. England/Germany should have emailed the mods, I believe they might have forced that one to a draw.

Nothing. If they didn't force it to draw, the game is still going. I don't know why they didn't take him out; they should have done it. England is obviously a little bit behind on endgame etiquette.
josunice (3702 D(S))
26 Apr 13 UTC
GenLee - Where are the WebDip rules that list etiquette rules like: "the rule is 2 years of no progress and the game ends in a draw."
Fortress Door (1837 D)

Two wrongs do not make a right. Your dick move was worse than England's somewhat dickish move
Partysane (10754 D(B))

There is nothing like and "endgame etiquette". The endgame is what the players want it to be.

"There is nothing like and "endgame etiquette". The endgame is what the players want it to be."

Yeah, but you're still an asshole for dragging out a game.
jmbostwick (2308 D)
26 Apr 13 UTC
Regardless, England was the only person who could ever be in position to take Munich. Once it became clear that he wouldn't do so (which should have been, oh, 9 turns before the CD), the only proper end to the game would be to draw immediately. Russia is absolutely and totally in the wrong here.
Partysane (10754 D(B))
26 Apr 13 UTC
Ehm? I never dragged a game anywhere? I was reffering to who should and should not be included and that i find it rediculous to drag out a game to force other players to eliminate someone.
josunice (3702 D(S))
26 Apr 13 UTC
Fortress Door - it would be easier if there were a hard rule, then. Leaving it to reasonable judgement of the players leaves some questionable end games... I did not feel obligated to honor Germany participating in the draw, and don't think that itself is a dick move or unsportsman-like (Lando) in this specific game. However, if WebDip were to layout hard and fast rules (like GenLee referred to), than so be it...
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 13 UTC
The mods would have forced that. Total dick move to refuse to draw when the stalemate line was met. One more asshole to add to my list of assholes to never play.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 13 UTC
Encouraging them to eliminate Germany by backing off is not the dick move. The dick move was refusing to draw after 10 fucking years of game play. 3 tops, then you say "OK, they aren't gonna do it" and you draw.
yebellz (729 D(G))

@Gen Lee, there is no "x-year rule". Such situations are handled on a case-by-case basis. Let me write a longer response...
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 13 UTC
I can't wait to see Ye's response. I know the mods have drawn games in the past after interviewing the players and finding out that no matter what the big guy wanted, the resitance refused to eliminate anyone.

I think what Russia did was bad form .... I pity him, I hope the GR and the extra points he gains from turning a 4-way draw into a 3-way draw after 10 years helps him sleep at night. I want a button so I can exclude people like that from games I play

There is no written rule Josunice. However, I've heard several times that 2 years with no progress can be forced to a draw by the mods. I actually emailed them about this for one of the first round games and the general rule was confirmed, however, the game was not forced to draw b/c "progress" included the big player only advancing against the stalemate line to ukraine within that 2 years which per a mod reset the 2 years.

The sportsman thing to do is pull back if you want the elimination, encourage England to take it, but if he doesn't in 2 years-go ahead and draw.

I am sure Josunice will learn and employ this strategy to his future games.
Mapu (362 D)

I do like josunice from messaging with him and respect him as a talented player. I do have to say, though, that in one of the first round GB games there was a country absolutely refusing to draw even with nowhere to go and no one else to eliminate. I even emailed the mods about it and they said to let it go one more year. It turned out to be josunice. So this must be his M.O.
yebellz (729 D(G))
26 Apr 13 UTC
Gen Lee, did you see my reply? THERE IS NO HARD SET 2 YEAR RULE.

That particular case may have caused some confusion, but I think the mod was simply saying that he would reassess after two years.
josunice (3702 D(S))
26 Apr 13 UTC
Ouch, Mapu... I thought this was a special case with special circumstances... I guess it is just me that's special... Let me see if I can find that game -- post the link if you can remember which it was. I don't remember anything like that -- and unlike some people around this space, I don't TRY to be a dick <GRIN>
josunice (3702 D(S))
26 Apr 13 UTC
Mapu, did you mean this one? gameID=110234 I don't think I stalled -- there was still action in the west, though it did ultimately end in stalemate... I was considering backing off Russia, too, but in the end decided that would not have been worth the delay or risk... Let me know if it was another of our round 1 games...

Minor bug
Several times in a game of mine, in the list of players at the bottom, it has shown that France is muted when I never muted France. I believe it has only happened when I've been in Russia's messages. When I switch to a different country's messages, it goes away, and doesn't come back when I switch back to Russia's. It's possible that it only happened when I'm first viewing the game after a new turn has began, but I'm not sure.

Ancient Med Stats?
Does anybody have any win/ draw stats for ancient med games? I know it's quite a balanced map but does any country fare notably better or worse than the others, such as can be seen with Italy in Classic, and South Africa in World etc.
Just by looking at the map I feel like Greece and Egypt might be worst off, despite my only ever solo on this site coming from Greece.

Aldy has done so much for this site, code wise, I think he has to be the most trustworthy of all our members, right up there with Kestas. I know the mdos and admins don't use popularity in their decision, but maybe they could add his name to consideration next time around.
