Phase Lengths
So there are a bunch of game phase lengths in the range from 30 minutes to 4 hours. Why would anyone ever want to play a game that made them wake up every hour for (potentially) weeks? Has anyone ever used those phase lengths?

Words that are easy to say but hard to live by
I think we all have principles that we believe in that we have trouble following. Here's one of mine--These words from Paul's letter to the Christians in Philippi are close to 2000 years old and still carry tremendous meaning: Philippians 4:6-7. What are yours?

Should We Feel bad for Refusing to Draw Out for 10 years?
gameID=111449 I bought in high, and flubbed a solo run. Once stalemate lines were drawn, I just couldn't live with Germany getting a piece of the draw. However, though I retreated in 1913, England England refused to execute him... I understand loyalty, but I refused to end the game. Germany CD'ed in 1925 making both of our stands on principle moot.

A Request for a Generous Mod
Hello,

I have a request for a trustworthy individual. Draugnar will have to agree to the individual (and to participate in this). It will take probably over an hour or more of your time, but the site will make $100.

Minor bug
Several times in a game of mine, in the list of players at the bottom, it has shown that France is muted when I never muted France. I believe it has only happened when I've been in Russia's messages. When I switch to a different country's messages, it goes away, and doesn't come back when I switch back to Russia's. It's possible that it only happened when I'm first viewing the game after a new turn has began, but I'm not sure.

Site-wide study: IQ, personality, and GR

Jmo and I are interested in doing a correlation study among IQ, personality, GR, and win/draw percent for the site. We are really interested in seeing if there are any predictive relationship. To that end, we are going to ask for volunteers to take the same IQ and personality test (internal validity). You would then email us your userid, IQ, personality (four-letter such as ENTP), all-time ghostrating (not ranking), and the win/draw percent at [email protected].
You may post your results on the forum, but for accuracy (as accurate as self-reporting can be) reasons, please email us.

IQ: http://www.free-iqtest.net/
Personality: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp
GR: http://tournaments.webdiplomacy.net/theghost-ratingslist (use the all time list)

For all the good knowing your IQ and Personality Type will do you, you might as well compare GR to Favorite Color and Date of Birth.

Sorry if that came off has harsh, but I truly believe IQ and Personality Types to be utter nonsense.

That's ok, abge. I have little to no conception going in to the study.
if it turns out there is no correlation whatsoever, I'm perfectly happy with that.

It's what us scientists do.

I don't have a GR, but my IQ is 123 and my Myers-Briggs type is ISTJ.

IQ tests are bullshit but I am a believer in the accuracy of the Myers-Briggs type. Carl Jung is underrated as a psychologist.
slyster (3934 D)
25 Apr 13 UTC
The tough part of this for you guys is that you'll need to have a representative sample to come to good result. Since I like these sort of tests, I'll do it, but I'm not sure it'll be that representative, especially since the IQ tests on the web are usually misconducted.

Still, lets see what's up.
redhouse1938 (429 D)

The IQ site is not good zultar.
It does not factor in time, and the more time people have on their hands, the longer they can waste their time on this IQ test. My IQ being exceptionally high, I cracked the test itself.

IQ - 140 according to that test
(probably the cap or I missed just one as I have seen 152 on standard test and have recorded 157+ before on MENSA's and others)

MB - INTP according to that one
"INTP

Introvert(33%) iNtuitive(12%) Thinking(38%) Perceiving(44)%
•You have moderate preference of Introversion over Extraversion (33%)
•You have slight preference of Intuition over Sensing (12%)
•You have moderate preference of Thinking over Feeling (38%)
•You have moderate preference of Perceiving over Judging (44%)"

Peak GR - 321.26

I think I may be the only INFJ here. I've taken the personality test several times before. Really that one is useless since if you know how to answer it you can sway your outcome.

bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
25 Apr 13 UTC
The fact that I can go back into that test, get the exact same questions, and take as much time as I want to Google them makes it a terrible IQ test. I would think there is a much better option that has much better reliability and credibility. I would still be concerned over that because the only IQ test I'd trust would be administered by a professional. At the very least, though, find one that's either standardized and timed or not standardized.

Well done Draug, but any idiot could pass a MENSA test. Before I start, is the test fun or tedious?
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Apr 13 UTC
Well, the numeric sequence ones took me a moment longer and I think I missed at least one of them. Honestly, that IQ test was too short to get a real read.
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Apr 13 UTC
The high IQ society has a timed sample one, but it is only 8 questions.
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Apr 13 UTC
@Oct - I doubt "any idiot" could, but yeah, MENSA isn't the toughtest organization to get in to as can be deomstrated by some of the rather rodinary actors who are members. Like acting takes intellect...

Ancient Med Stats?
Does anybody have any win/ draw stats for ancient med games? I know it's quite a balanced map but does any country fare notably better or worse than the others, such as can be seen with Italy in Classic, and South Africa in World etc.
Just by looking at the map I feel like Greece and Egypt might be worst off, despite my only ever solo on this site coming from Greece.

Aldy has done so much for this site, code wise, I think he has to be the most trustworthy of all our members, right up there with Kestas. I know the mdos and admins don't use popularity in their decision, but maybe they could add his name to consideration next time around.
