Phase Lengths
So there are a bunch of game phase lengths in the range from 30 minutes to 4 hours. Why would anyone ever want to play a game that made them wake up every hour for (potentially) weeks? Has anyone ever used those phase lengths?

Words that are easy to say but hard to live by
I think we all have principles that we believe in that we have trouble following. Here's one of mine--These words from Paul's letter to the Christians in Philippi are close to 2000 years old and still carry tremendous meaning: Philippians 4:6-7. What are yours?

Should We Feel bad for Refusing to Draw Out for 10 years?
gameID=111449 I bought in high, and flubbed a solo run. Once stalemate lines were drawn, I just couldn't live with Germany getting a piece of the draw. However, though I retreated in 1913, England England refused to execute him... I understand loyalty, but I refused to end the game. Germany CD'ed in 1925 making both of our stands on principle moot.

A Request for a Generous Mod
Hello,

I have a request for a trustworthy individual. Draugnar will have to agree to the individual (and to participate in this). It will take probably over an hour or more of your time, but the site will make $100.

Minor bug
Several times in a game of mine, in the list of players at the bottom, it has shown that France is muted when I never muted France. I believe it has only happened when I've been in Russia's messages. When I switch to a different country's messages, it goes away, and doesn't come back when I switch back to Russia's. It's possible that it only happened when I'm first viewing the game after a new turn has began, but I'm not sure.

That is SWEET. Now EoGs can be done after the game right then and there, and it stays with you. This also works with gunboat games as well.
So global can be used as EoG, and notes as your own thought.

Thanks, Kestas! :)

hahahahahaha....hahahahaha.......hahahahaha .........sorted, OK no more EOGs on the forum, just the link to the EOG but I expect the notes will only be for use by the people who played in the game and not other people who want to make comments.

bo_sox48 its the tab that would otherwise have been occupied by the power you are playing. So let's say you were playing Germany, then the brown tab is labelled "Notes".

All credit goes to Alderian, who wrote the change. And I think he also made one to PM notifications. We've got a beta site set up now, and all our changes go through github, which makes sharing code much easier. All I need to do is check for obvious bugs and whether it'll affect performance, and deploy it.

Thanks for the changes Alderian.

Also I have to say his changes stuck to webDip conventions, re-used existing webDip code where necessary, and were done thoughtfully. Definitely very promising.

Alderian (2425 D(S))

The PM Notification update will give you a notification at the top with the envelope icon next to the letters PM when someone has sent you a private message. It will take you to the webdiplomacy.net/index.php?notices=on page where you can read the PM. Note that you may have already read the PM while on the normal Home page.

The Notes tab is available in games for all press types. Additionally, the global tab is available in read-only mode for nopress (gunboat) games. So if a player is banned, or a moderator leaves a message, you'll be able to read it there and won't have the envelope at the top telling you that you have unread game messages for the rest of the game.

And, once a nopress game is done, the global tab is opened up, so you could conduct some EOG there. Of course once a game is finished, new messages do not generate the envelope icon at the top of the page, so no guarantee anyone else will read it there, just as there is no guarantee it'll be read in the forum.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

And yes, as spyman indicated, the Notes tab is really using the chat channel that goes to yourself. No one else can see your notes as the "from" and "to" side of the message are both you.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

By the way, one other change that went in a couple of weeks ago that may not have been noticed. If you are the last player to join a live game and then realize that the scheduled start time is not when you were thinking, you may now leave the game up to 30 minutes before the scheduled start time.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

Alderian - all good stuff, you are a force for good in a sea of evil.
Bytheway if we want to point the forum to our EOG we can just post the gamelink on the forum but I am planning on using the notes section just to shout at people after gunboats ..... sorry did I say shout, I meant discuss the game when it finishes.

Great update -- this way we can keep more of these pesky true Diplomacy related posts out of the Forum -- they do seem to get in the way on this Diplomacy site when people want to post random streams of consciousness... In all seriousness, great update -- it will really help build the community by allowing sharing on the games, post game... Just note, this might lead to some angry and inappropriate posts which might call for PM intervention... as if that has never happened before....

Kestasjk and Alderian: Great changes! Keeping banner pop-ups for finished games sounds like a good idea for the next change. Now that you can mute messages from obnoxious players (never done that myself) enabling that shouldn't be a problem. I know a lot of people wish they would still worked after games have ended.

Wasn't the global/public press archive always accessible in no press games? I guess checking there doesn't remove the unread message banner, though.

Speking of public press archives, are you aware that the public press archive in gameID=93086 is inaccessible? (I think Kestas should have gotten an e-mail from a mod. already.) It might not be related to this update – in fact, I think I saw the same problem in that game a few weeks ago – but who knows?
Draugnar (0 DX)
25 Apr 13 UTC
The actual hyperlink for clicking on messages didn't exist in gunboat so you had to trick the system to take you to the page before.

And it didn't clear the flag.

This is so awesome, glad that we don't have to hack the URL anymore to write EoGs as the game proceeds. Thanks Alderian!
josunice (3702 D(S))
25 Apr 13 UTC
So, does that mean comments in the Notes tab is available in all games but can only be seen by yourself -- these then are notes for your own purposes, then. Once a game is done, though, you can post comments in the Global tab in non-press games... Thanks!
Draugnar (0 DX)

Yeppers on all counts.

So keep your running EOG in notes then copy and paste to Global when the game ends.

Ancient Med Stats?
Does anybody have any win/ draw stats for ancient med games? I know it's quite a balanced map but does any country fare notably better or worse than the others, such as can be seen with Italy in Classic, and South Africa in World etc.
Just by looking at the map I feel like Greece and Egypt might be worst off, despite my only ever solo on this site coming from Greece.

Alderian for the next mod!
Aldy has done so much for this site, code wise, I think he has to be the most trustworthy of all our members, right up there with Kestas. I know the mdos and admins don't use popularity in their decision, but maybe they could add his name to consideration next time around.
