Well I look forward to watching you mitomon, I am hopeless with Italy. 2nd, I said a while back I would be taking a break from WebDiplomacy, so I haven't joined any new games for some time, and only have one active game, so I "didn't make the cut" because I didn't "apply", even if I had "applied", I may well not have qualified. Anyway there is at least one player who is far superior in experience & ability to me, the awesome Valis & I'll have to check the game, because there's probably one or two more like that. Certainly Capt Brad thinks he's superior to my good self & it might be considered churlish to disabuse him of that illusion.

I apologise for overlooking Ogion..top 1%, ranked inside the top 50 players..light years ahead of me.

Well that was an interesting first year.
It looks, to me, like Valis has done well, with Capt Brad (Germany) not bouncing him and letting him take Sweden. Also, Ishirkmywork surprised me by not convoying his army from Edinburgh to Norway, so it looks like both England and Germany are wanting to be friends with Valis in the North. Valis has also positioned his armies well in the South to move into Galicia and threaten Ogion with Austria
It looks like a real test for Ogion with Austria, just as well that Ogion is a highly ranked player. Ogion has a strong Russia on his borders, plus mitomon with Italy tried for Trieste last move.
Big opportunity in all of that for Hathkin with Turkey.. if he chose to support Ogion ? Or not. On "form" Hathkin is the lowest ranked player in this game, and has two of the best, Valis & Ogion as neighbours.
Capt Brad (Germany) has taken a rather "anti France" strategy with two consecutive attempts to get an army into Burgundy. It looks like Demon Overlord ( France) has out played him, tactically, by moving to Burgundy with support in the Spring move, and then capturing Belgium with an army, and bouncing him in Burgundy in the Autumn move. It also looks like Demon Overlord has outcome Capt Brad in the diplomacy caper, by getting England and Italy to give France leave & it looks like England is keen to invade Germany in cooperation with France.
So Capt Brad is doing it tough..only one build, so it will be interesting to see how Valis acts, will he move against England, or not. Will Valis build a new fleet in St Petersburg North Coast ? Or will he play a more subtle game in the North and go hard in the South ? My guess is Valis will see the opportunity to use Capt Brad as a pawn and prevent England and France from being able to quickly defeat Germany.. with the qualification that trying to predict what the wily, & imho, "Machiavellian" maestro, Valis will do is extremely difficult.
So, my ratings are..best performers in the first year are..Valis & Demon Overlord, with a special mention for Ogion ( he did well despite being attacked by Italy and threatened by Russia, and got Greece against competition from Turkey.
Still, I think Ogion's immediate future will depend on what Turkey and Italy do.

Typos..it looks like DO has outdone Germany ( not outcome ) in the diplomacy caper.. getting peace, ( not leave) from England and Italy.

Spring 02
Wowee, what interesting builds from Valis, Ogion and Capt Brad.
I think Ishirkmywork is in trouble on Norway. What a bizarre build by Capt Brad, and mitomon, you are in for interesting times.
Overall.... Got to love the way Valis plays Diplomacy.

Autumn 02 Retreats
Well I feel like giving Ishirkmywork a solid kick in the rear vestibule for wasting a bold set of spring 01 moves. I love to play England and it hurts to see the way he has played. Hope he is learning from this. I'm often too cautious, but I see so many players get undone by over reach... Eg the move from Norway to Skagerack instead of securing the Norwegian Sea.
Top of the class, Valis and Ogion. Capt Brad has improved his position, partly because of his good play, but also because, imho, Demon Overlord and Ishirkmywork made the mistake of over reach ..getting the Ruhr cost them Holland, or they simply didn't appreciate the cunning of Valis and predict his support hold for Denmark and that Capt Brad would play the obvious tactically best % attack on Holland.
Hathkin with Turkey has made a clear strategic choice and implemented that well. It's risky, but I think necessary in his circumstances. Valis should see him as being useful to help Russia contain a strong Austria, and there's risk for Valis in attacking Turkey, in that Ogion with Austria could capture just as many Turkish sc's as Russia would... So Valis is unlikely to see the benefits of attacking Turkey outweighing the risks & downside of such a move also strengthening Austria.

This is fun.

Hoorah, after a pause, the game is back into action.
Valis has acted ruthlessly to take up the opportunity of exterminating Turkey and appears to be a diplomatic champion, the apparent alliance of Russia, Austria and Germany is most powerful and more than a match for England and France.

It's .let interesting to watch, and I'm already curious as to which player gets stabbed later on..will it be Austria or Germany ? Or could they gang up on Valis later on ?
First comes the elimination of Turkey and then Italy, England and France have to be all knocked on the bead.

Valis continues to play beautifully, Ishirkmywork continues to play, in my opinion a poor game with England, eg risks the North Sea, doesn't control Skagerack, never thought of Heligoland Bt ?

How can a request for friendship turn out so bad? Reminds me of when I made up two games and then the other players ganged up and attacked me!
