Points in play calculation
All,

I have read the FAQ, but it seems to state that your points in play are the sum of point that you *bet*. Mine seem to exceed that, but may be correct if they are the "current value" rather than the "bet." I could do some tedious counting, but I imagine that most of the people here know, so please pardon the "lazy ask" of someone new to this site, but a long-term Dip player.

Anyone here tried Subterfuge?
Its an iOS/Droid game similar to Neptune's Pride somewhat. Slow Realtime where movement takes hours to days to resolve, no RNG, and based on the Diplomacy tradition of deception and alliances. The key difference to Pride is a toroidal map and a different win condition. Anyone else given it a go?

Simple rule question I'm unsure of.
Country 1: A sup B move C; B move C;
Country 2: C sup D move A; D move A;
My thinking is everyone bounces because both supports are broken. Is that right?

When Does A Draw Occur?
When does a draw occur? As soon as all players vote for draw...or when all players have voted for draw and the next turn is adjudicated? I ask because I am in a game where the draw votes are hidden.

Question about centers
If a nation has two territories, one with a center and one without, and they lose the one with the center, are they defeated? or do they get more chances to gain it back?

Rules question I couldn't find on FAQ.
I know support is cut when the supporting unit is dislodged, but what would happen in the following scenario:
Country 1: A->D; B Support A->D
Country 2: C->B; D Support C->B

My suggestion for a major addition to the game mechanics - something to reflect upon.
What if the game had a concept o fortification?
If you are interested both in the game of diplomacy and in the real world military history, you would have felt that the game simulates the real world strategy impressively well - except for one moment. In the real life a defender has an advantage, which is not well simulated in the game: in military strategy, in a conventional war a general has to plan for a 3 to 1 advantage if he hopes to displace a fortified defender, whereas in a game it could be 2 to 1, or 3 to 2, etc.

This I had this brilliant idea to add a concept of fortification to the game!

Hear me out. What if a unit could have an option to fortify rather than hold - and then in the next move this unit would count as having a support hold order to it. So next move (or next year) the enemy would have to add an additional attacking support in order to displace the unit.
Of course, if attacked while fortifying, the order would fail, just like it happens with other orders.

The "fortify" order would obviously only apply to land units.

I wonder how that would change a dynamic of the game. My take would be that it would make way more stalemate options, and so more draws - like in real life military history.

What do you think?
I support the thinking, especially in the context of the world war one and the trench warfare.

On the other hand, I dont know if and how it can be applied the best. Interesting thinking in anyway.
There is an interesting variant on vdiplomacy (Viking variant or something like that) where some neutral centers have units that are constantly playing hold or even two neutral centers that sup hold each other so its harder to take them.

I know you didnt mean this by talking about fortification, but it is interesting in a way and it doesnt change a concept of the game a lot.
" variant on vdiplomacy "

I have never played there, I will definitely give it a try, thanks for the tip.

The fact that you can't dislodge unless you have a greater force is already defender's advantage. Otherwise, there would be no stalemate lines.
I am aware of that, but it does not correspond to the usual relation of forces in reality. Anyway, I think that would add an interesting new dimension to the game.

I think that might make defensive strategy a bit too strong.

To counter, what if the concept of "supply chains" were introduced?

Unit A is moving. Unit B can support A. Due to the map, Unit C cannot support A, but can support B. Unit C can issue a "chain B support A move" order. If neither B nor C fail in their support orders, A moves with strength +2. No limit to distance of chained support.

So if fortification and supply chains were introduced as coequals the game should balance but add a brand new element.
you could also add "air superiority" which would allow a unit to order a "air strip" option which would build an airstrip on that territory and give all adjacent territories +1 defense and +1 attack in favor of the owners country. EX: Germany orders Munich to "air strip" in S 1901. now munich is worth 2 units when defending and attacking. all adjacent territory favor the german player. this would make areas like Munich more valuable and add an element of diplomacy to the fortifying process. England may tell germany in S 1901 that a air strip built in Munich would be considered an act of war. (as an air strip inherently powers Germany.

I recall there being some variants of Diplomacy that involved air units. Their difference was they could move on land and sea, but couldn't capture SCs, merely deny access to them if they were in the spot.

I may be misremembering though.

spectating games
Is there a way to see the global chat in a game your not in? it wouldn't make it so that you could tell someone something they wouldn't have known otherwise like showing private messages would do. I'm just wondering if there is a specific reason why you can't.

I joined a special game, but it quickly lost any sort of extra rules. I wouldn't mind, but it is a 10 day phase world map. Is it possible for a mod to remove me without taking a hit to my record?

Curiosity.
Mods can cancel games but can mods force draw? for example 3 players have played for weeks and a one player breaks a site rule implying the game should be cancelled but if the 2 remaining players agree to draw then can the mods force draw?
